Christian Saṃnyāsis and the Enduring Influence of Bede Griffiths in California
3 (2016) Miscellaneous 3: AP-BI Christian Saṃnyāsis and the Enduring Influence of Bede Griffiths in California ENRICO BELTRAMINI Department of Religious Studies, Santa Clara University, California, USA © 2016 Ruhr-Universität Bochum Entangled Religions 3 (2016) ISSN 2363-6696 http://dx.doi.org/10.13154/er.v3.2016.AP-BI Enrico Beltramini Christian Saṃnyāsis and the Enduring Influence of Bede Griffiths in California ENRICO BELTRAMINI Santa Clara University, California, USA ABSTRACT This article thematizes a spiritual movement of ascetic hermits in California, which is based on the religious practice of Bede Griffiths. These hermits took their religious vows in India as Christian saṃnyāsis, in the hands of Father Bede, and then returned to California to ignite a contemplative renewal in the Christian dispirited tradition. Some tried to integrate such Indian tradition in the Benedictine order, while others traced new paths. KEY WORDS Bede; Griffiths; California; saṃnyāsa; Camaldoli; Christianity Preliminary Remarks— Sources and Definitions The present paper profited greatly from its main sources, Sr. Michaela Terrio and Br. Francis Ali, hermits at Sky Farm Hermitage, who generously shared with me their memories of Bede Griffiths as well as spiritual insights of their life of renunciation as Christian saṃnyāsis in California. Several of the personalities mentioned in this article are personally known to the author. I offer a definition of the main terms used here:saṃnyāsis ‘ ’ are the renouncers, the acosmic hermits in the tradition of the Gītā; ‘saṃnyāsa’ is the ancient Indian consecration to acosmism and also the fourth and last stage (aśhrama) in the growth of human life; ‘guru’ is a polysemic word in India; its theological meaning depends on the religious tradition. -

Abraham Malpan
Abraham Malpan By: Alex Kolath Date: 7 February 2008 Revised: 15 August 2010 1 Introduction In the history of the Mar Thoma Church there are many notable and influential persons that helped reform the church to what it is today. For example, Mathews Mar Athanasius, Titus I Mar Thoma, Abraham Mar Thoma, Alexander Mar Thoma, or lay persons such as K.K. Kuruvilla, C.P. Mathew and K.N. Daniel have all played a role in the reforming of the Mar Thoma Church. But there is one person that all these aforementioned persons would likely regard as the key reformer in the history of the Mar Thoma Church; the person who initiated the reformation movement that eventually formed the Mar Thoma Church: Pulakunnathu Abraham Malpan. The story of this man, Abraham Malpan (“Malpan” is a Syriac term for professor), is a difficult one to tell. The literature available is limited. He himself did not write much, if anything at all, about himself or what he believed. If he did, these writings have not been found. Yet, despite the scarcity of information on the Malpan, he has a legacy and tradition that continues in the church to this day. However, due to the many unknowns regarding him, his story has likely been exaggerated in some parts, perhaps even fabricated in some others, yet certainly there would have to be truths found in his tradition as well. In this paper, we will look at the story of Abraham Malpan based on the information available. His history, his personality and his role in the reformation will be examined. -

(Lk. 5:4). St. Aloysius Minor Seminary has taken these words as the motto for the academic year 2016-2017. By "going deep" we find our Christian vocation and mission especially in having a personal relationshion with the living Christ. When Peter and his companions acted according to the command of the Lord, they had a miraculous catch (Lk. 5:6). In the same way, our Seminarians strive to develop a deeper relationship with Jesus in everything we do, we are, and we are called to be. In many areas of life, especially in our discipleship, we can work so hard and seem to have so little to show for it. -

I am glad that the new curriculum is ready to be introduced in 2006. Here we are in the process of a transition from Cokesbury to the Mar Thoma Sunday School Samajam Curriculum. DIPLOMARBEIT Titel der Diplomarbeit Placid Podipara´s Reflection on the Church “St. Thomas Christians are Indian in Culture” Verfasser Lijo Joseph angestrebter akademischer Grad Magister der Theologie (Mag. theol.) Wien, 2015 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt: A 011 Studienrichtung lt. Studienblatt: Diplomstudium Katholische Fachtheologie Betreuer: Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Rudolf Prokschi 2 Dedicated to all the members of the Syro-Malabar Church 3 4 Acknowledgements This is a master’s degree thesis investigate on Placid Podipara’s reflection on the Church “St. Thomas Christians are Indian in culture”. It is a humble attempt to know how Fr. Placid Podipara understood the birth and spread of Christianity through the preaching of St. Thomas the Apostle. With the passage of time, Christian religion rooted well, adapting itself to the customs and practices of the place. There was no attempt on the part of Christians to remain aloof from a given society or tried to remain a separate entity. The Church has accepted, absorbed, and assimilated itself to the good elements of Indian culture. With deep sense of gratitude, I acknowledge the valuable contribution of some important persons who helped me to complete this task. I am thankful to my bishop, Mar Mathew Arackal, Bishop of Kanjirappally, India, who sent me to Austria to do my theological studies in the University of Vienna. Gratefully I acknowledge the role of Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Rudolf Prokschi for his valuable suggestions, corrections, and guidance. I thank Fr. Stephan Mararikulam MSFS, Fr. Joy Plathottathil SVD, Stefan Jahns, Dr. Daniel Galadza, and Michaela Zachs for the correction of the language and suggestions.
