A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY The Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) at Sarnath is one of its kind in the country. The University was established in 1967. The idea of the University was mooted in course of a dialogue between Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and His Holiness the Dalai Lama with a view to educating the young Tibetan in exile and those from the Himalayan regions of India, who have religion, culture and language in common with Tibet.

New York: Routledge.) Bimal Krishna Matilal was born in India in 1935, a dozen years before India gained its independence. By the time he passed away in 1991, he had a named chair at Oxford University. For those who work in Indian philosophy he is a figure that looms large, but for those working in other areas of philosophy he’s largely unknown. That’s unfortunate because he was a brilliant and thoughtful philosopher who produced interesting work on a wide range of subjects. Matilal initially made his name working in logic, first on Indian logic then later on Western logic. That by itself was not so revolutionary; what was rev- olutionary was his approach to the subject. Rather than treating Indian logic as a kind of historical curio, he treated it as relevant to contemporary philo- sophical work on universal questions. He inspired generations of scholars to approach texts of classical Indian thought as containing living ideas.1 So why should metaethicists care about Matilal? Classical Indian philoso- phy has very little explicit normative ethical theorizing, let alone obviously metaethical theorizing. Flip through any overview of classical Indian philos- ophy and you’ll find a lot of epistemology, logic, and metaphysics but little, if any, metaethics. This is not to say that there isn’t any metaethics, but finding it takes some looking. And this kind of looking is difficult and time consum- ing.

Siddhasena Gaˆi’s È¥kå 1. Of the commentaries to be studied this is by far the most recent one. It comments on the Tattvårtha SËtra and the Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya, and therefore postdates both. More helpful information for determining its date consists in the mention of Dharmak¥rti and his Pramåˆavinißcaya in the commentary on TS 5.31 (I, p. 397). Dharmak¥rti lived in the seventh century at the latest (about 600-660 A.D. according to Frauwallner 1961: 137f.; Lindtner 1980 argues for ca. 530-600). Siddhasena Gaˆi lived after this. He appears to be referred to under the name ‘Gandhahastin’ in Í¥lå∫ka’s commentary on the Ócårå∫ga SËtra (p. 1 and 55 [82]), because ‘Gandhahastin’ is used as a name of Siddhasena Gaˆi in several works (Sukhlal 1974: Intr. p. 55 f.). Í¥lå∫ka wrote in the middle of the 9th century or soon after that (Kapadia 1941: 197). Siddhasena Gaˆi wrote before this. A further specification of Siddhasena Gaˆi’s date is possible, as follows. The Tattvårthådhigama Bhå∑ya on sËtra 9.22 explains the word pråyaßcitta ‘atonement’ and makes in that connection the following observation (II, p. 254): cit¥ sañjñånavißuddhyo˙ dhåtu˙ | tasya cittam iti bhavati ni∑†håntam auˆådikaµ ca | “The root is ‘citÁ in [the senses] “ideation” and “purification”’. Citta is its [derivative], ending in the suffix of the past participle (viz., -ta) and belonging to the words derived with an Uˆådi suffix”.

    A Note on Paradoxes and Some Applications Ram Prasad At times thoughts in prints, dialogues, conversations and the likes create illusion among people. There may be one reason or the other that causes fallacies. Whenever one attempts to clear the illusion to get the logical end and is unable to, one may slip into the domain of paradoxes. A paradox seemingly may appear absurd or self contradictory that may have in fact a high sense of thought. Here a wide meaning of it including its shades is taken. There is a group of similar sensing words each of which challenges the wit of an onlooker. A paradox sometimes surfaces as and when one is in deep immersion of thought. Unprinted or oral thoughts including paradoxes can rarely survive. Some paradoxes always stay folded to gaily mock on. In deep immersion of thought W S Gilbert remarks on it in the following poetic form - How quaint the ways of paradox At common sense she gaily mocks1 The first student to expect great things of Philosophy only to suffer disillusionment was Socrates (Sokratez) -'what hopes I had formed and how grievously was I disappointed'. In the beginning of the twentieth century mathematicians and logicians rigidly argued on topics which appear possessing intuitively valid but apparently contrary statements. At times when no logical end is seen around and the topic felt hot, more on lookers would enter into these entanglements with argumentative approach. May be, but some 'wise' souls would manage to escape. Zeno's wraths - the Dichotomy, the Achilles, the Arrow and the Stadium made thinkers very uncomfortable all along.
