A BRIEF PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY The Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS) at Sarnath is one of its kind in the country. The University was established in 1967. The idea of the University was mooted in course of a dialogue between Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India and His Holiness the Dalai Lama with a view to educating the young Tibetan in exile and those from the Himalayan regions of India, who have religion, culture and language in common with Tibet.

    STATEMENT DS213 SWAMI YOGANANDA AND THE SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP A Successful Hindu Countermission to the West by Elliot Miller The earliest Hindu missionaries to the West were arguably the most impressive. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda (1863 –1902), a young disciple of the celebrated Hindu “avatar” (manifestation of God) Sri Ramakrishna (1836 –1886), spoke at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago and won an enthusiastic American following with his genteel manner and erudite presentation. Over the next few years, he inaugurated the first Eastern religious movement in America: the Vedanta Societies of various cities, independent of one another but under the spiritual leadership of the Ramakrishna Order in India. In 1920 a second Hindu missionary effort was launched in America when a comparably charismatic “neo -Vedanta” swami, Paramahansa Yogananda, was invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, sponsored by the Unitarian Church. After the Congress, Yogananda lectured across the country, spellbinding audiences with his immense charm and powerful presence. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his Self -Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles on the site of a former hotel atop Mount Washington. He was the first Eastern guru to take up permanent residence in the United States after creating a following here. NEO-VEDANTA: THE FORCE STRIKES BACK Neo-Vedanta arose partly as a countermissionary movement to Christianity in nineteenth -century India. Having lost a significant minority of Indians (especially among the outcast “Untouchables”) to Christianity under British rule, certain adherents of the ancient Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism retooled their religion to better compete with Christianity for the s ouls not only of Easterners, but of Westerners as well.

In his introduction to Prof. Sukhamoy Chakravarty's Writings on Development, Rakshit (1997) outlines three necessary qualities for a front ranking development economist. These are: (1) An analytical ability of a very high order (2) A Deep Knowledge of Political, Economic and Social History of Nations and (3) A keen perception of problems pertaining to both formulation of policies and their successful implementation. In addition to all these traits, this delectable anthology contains a fourth attribute – Sense of Humour. For instance, the description of a tourist guide's speech as a public good (p. 50) reminds me of quiz competitions, at which I often picked up the right answers to esoteric questions from auditorium chatter – hall collection, in our parlance. A small joke simplifies a difficult concept and the discussion flows on like a stream. Indeed, on this substantive evidence, the author deserves the moniker Tusitala (teller of tales), a là Robert Louise Stevenson, whose burial ground he visited in Samoa. An Economist's Miscellany: From the Groves of Academe to the Slopes of Raisina Hill is a collection of eighty essays in newspapers and magazines, by Prof. Kaushik Basu, between 2005 and 2019. It covers a wide range of topics – inequality, market reforms, authoritarianism, policy perspectives, travelogues, scepticism, personal reminiscences and hobbies.

He was 80. • Rabindranath Tagore was born on 7 May 1861 to an upper-class Bengali family in his ancestral home in Calcutta. • He became the most influential writer, poet and artist in Bengal and also India in the early 20th century • He was a polymath and his mastery spread over many arenas like art, literature, poetry, drama, music and learning. • He became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature when he won the award in 1913 for his translation of his own work in Bengali, Gitanjali. He was the first non-white person to win a Nobel Prize. • Tagore is said to have composed over 2000 songs and his songs and music are called ‘Rabindrasangeet’ with its own distinct lyrical and fluid style. • The national anthems of both India and Bangladesh were composed by Tagore. (India’s Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh’s Amar Shonar Bangla.) • The Sri Lankan national anthem is also said to have been inspired by him. • Tagore had composed Amar Shonar Bangla in 1905 in the wake of the Bengal partition to foster a spirit of unity and patriotism among Bengalis. He also used the Raksha Bandhan festival to bring about a feeling of brotherhood among Bengal’s Hindus and Muslims during the partition of 1905.

In 1882, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay (1838-1898) published the historical novel Anandamath containing his most famous verse and created a wave. The resounding echo of ‘Vande Mataram’ (Glory to Motherland) could be heard from young nationalist heroes headed for the gallows, leaders who addressed political rallies and barefoot children running the streets. More than a hundred years later, in 2002, this ‘second national anthem’ is being sung in school prayer halls and by fervent Hindu revivalists. However, if we accord to Bankimchandra the brand of nationalism that Vande Mataram has come to signify today, we’d be telling only half the story. The 19th century author who lived in the heydays of the intellectual revolution in Bengal ranks high amongst the historical figures who have contributed to the notions of liberalism and freedom.
