SWAMI YOGANANDA and the SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP a Successful Hindu Countermission to the West
STATEMENT DS213 SWAMI YOGANANDA AND THE SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP A Successful Hindu Countermission to the West by Elliot Miller The earliest Hindu missionaries to the West were arguably the most impressive. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda (1863 –1902), a young disciple of the celebrated Hindu “avatar” (manifestation of God) Sri Ramakrishna (1836 –1886), spoke at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago and won an enthusiastic American following with his genteel manner and erudite presentation. Over the next few years, he inaugurated the first Eastern religious movement in America: the Vedanta Societies of various cities, independent of one another but under the spiritual leadership of the Ramakrishna Order in India. In 1920 a second Hindu missionary effort was launched in America when a comparably charismatic “neo -Vedanta” swami, Paramahansa Yogananda, was invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, sponsored by the Unitarian Church. After the Congress, Yogananda lectured across the country, spellbinding audiences with his immense charm and powerful presence. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his Self -Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles on the site of a former hotel atop Mount Washington. He was the first Eastern guru to take up permanent residence in the United States after creating a following here. NEO-VEDANTA: THE FORCE STRIKES BACK Neo-Vedanta arose partly as a countermissionary movement to Christianity in nineteenth -century India. Having lost a significant minority of Indians (especially among the outcast “Untouchables”) to Christianity under British rule, certain adherents of the ancient Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism retooled their religion to better compete with Christianity for the s ouls not only of Easterners, but of Westerners as well. -

Clearlight News2010
Clear Light Community News June 2010 • Vol. 8 “Live God!" –Yogacharya Oliver "The very act of living for God alone is in itself a sermon to the world, eloquent beyond the finest oratory." – Paramahansa Yogananda, The Second Coming of Christ Dear Ones... Members and friends of Golden Lotus and Song of the Morning Ranch, Example speaks louder than words. When the first house went up in the Clear Light Community--that of George and MaryAnn Johnston--suddenly the dream of establishing one of Master's World Brotherhood Colonies on the property of Golden Lotus, Inc. at Song of the Morning Ranch became an incontrovertible fact. Years of planning, hours and hours of meetings and endless talking did not have the impact of that one house. Now we all KNEW that the project was for real, and everything else would follow. What did follow was more houses, each one occupied by individuals who understood the meaning of putting God first in their lives. Why else would anyone leave their friends, connections and city of residence to establish themselves so far away, like the hermits of old? In fact, if you ask any resident of the Clear Light Community, our forest home is NOT remote. It is located in the heart of God, the real Center of it all. Look out your window, and you can catch a glimpse of Him most any day. Reach out and take His hand-- so easy from where we are perched. If perchance your fingers slip a bit from His grasp, a Sunday Service and Fellowship Dinner at the Retreat will bring the contact right back. -

The Walters Deposition Book
Swami Kriyananda - The Deposition Book The Deposition Book: a long journey through truth. This book is extremely interesting, even though at a first approach it does not seem very easy. The reader is forced into an unusual format, which is typical of the legal documents, and which was maintained to certify the origin of the document itself. Once you are on familiar terms with line numbers and cross-references to the filed documents, it all becomes easy to read, and the shortness of the dialogues helps in that, since the latters are for the most made of questions and answers. The whole document refers to the witness of Mr. James Donald Walters, founder and director of the Ananda community, made of seven parts and bore in the period between 6th September and 30th November 1995 contextually with the investigations and the trial brought in action by Mrs. A. M. Bertolucci against the Ananda Church or God Realization. In the severances of the deposition, amongst moments of extreme composure and others of great bewilderment, there is the story of a man and a community of individuals, seen and interpreted through their expectations and ambitions, and nourished by their innermost convictions. For this reason we believe The Deposition Book to be the most credible and truthful testimony of the Ananda experience. It is not only told directly from the mouth of his founder, and therefore full of his personal story and of his own point of view on things, but it also contains accusations and testimonies of others actors inside and outside the community, who were somehow involved and took part in the great project of Mr. -
A Brief History of the San Diego Self-Realization Fellowship Temple
Preliminary Draft of slide show script A Brief History of The San Diego Self-Realization Fellowship Temple Research by Patrick Murphy and Dominic Alessio With information and stories gathered from: The City of San Diego; Chronicle of America by H. International Publishing; Inner Culture Magazine; Autobiography of a Yogi; Rajarsi Janakananda – A Great Western Yogi; Pictorial History of Self-Realization Fellowship; The Bishops Episcopal School; Mr. Clifford Kennel; Mrs. Brenda Rosser; And an earlier slide show on the temple by Edward Wiatt. 1 7/20/93 version The History of The San Diego Self-Realization Fellowship Temple On Sunday, September 5th 1943, just four days before Allied forces stormed ashore at Salerno Italy against the heavy German resistance, a peaceful little Church of All Religions overlooking San Diego Bay was dedicated by Paramahansa Yogananda. Despite wartime gas rationing, visitors filled with enthusiasm for the liberating teachings of this God realized Master, packed the church for the 11 am dedication and ensuing meetings at 3 and 8 pm. As light from the blue and gold draped windows reflected in large gold framed mirrors and highlighted figures of Jesus, Babaji, Krishna, St. Francis and others in the flower filled niches, Paramahansaji prayed, “Heavenly Father, may this church be blessed with the vibrations of Self perception of thy presence, and when we discuss theology and philosophy may we not get side tracked to the pitfalls of intellectual egotism and blind emotion, but travel straight to the highway of Self Realization and truth which leads to Thee.” Guest speakers including prominent Los Angeles Attorney Arthur Kennedy, who commented that “this was an historic event…in historic territory; for it is recorded that in the early days of California it was from this very vicinity that the cross of God was carried up the Kings Highway by the padres. -
Song of the Morning Ranch Yoga Retreat
Clear Light Community News April 2013 Vol. 12 Dear Ones ... Members and Friends of Golden Lotus and Song of the Morning Ranch, Paramahansa Yogananda's wishes for the devel- opment of World Brotherhood Colonies is the reason our Clear Light Community exists today on the pristine acreage of Song of the Morning Ranch. In a letter to Yogacharya Oliver dated October 4, 1949, Master wrote: "Dear Oliver: I am so happy to have your letter and to learn of your enthusiasm over the colony idea which I have begun to circulate among the members. I shall be happy to learn about your plans if any at this time. These colonies will do much to forward the cause of unity and peace. There the ideals and tenets of Self-Realization should be taught that there might be a unity of purpose in coming to the colonies -- a threefold purpose of harmonious development in body, mind, and soul, with the soul development of the greatest importance. For the ultimate goal of life, which is God-communion, must be stressed, because without that it is difficult for a group of (from left) Dr. Lewis, Paramahansa Yogananda, Rajarsi Janakananda, people with varied personalities and habits to Yogacharya Oliver Black, and Brother Bhaktananda at Kriya Yoga initia- live in harmony. ... With all my love again and tion ceremony, SRF international headquarters during 1951 Convocation . know that God and the Gurus are with you in your working for them. Life is a dewdrop trembling on the lotus leaf of time. Work for God now as long as the dewdrop lasts.
