It draws on the notion of fragment and actual fragmentary testimonies to study how pre- modern Iberian things and texts are reconstituted and used for various projects of personal, institutional, national and transnational reconstitution in the present. The corpus objects are necessarily diverse in chronological scope, with examples from the medieval, early-modern and modern periods, and touch upon works of many genres: chivalric romance, royal and personal correspondence, early-modern and modern historiography, Hispano-Arabic and Hispano-Hebrew lyric, inscriptions, pre-modern and modern biographies and 21st century book exhibitions. The dissertation proposes that Iberian fragments are engaged in various forms of reconstitution or production in the present and, at the same time, are held as timeless, unchanging entities that have the capability to allow users to connect with something genuinely old, truly Spanish and, indeed, eternal. -

1 Ama Ata Aidoo Professor Ama Ata Aidoo, née Christina Ama Aidoo (born 23 March 1940, Saltpond) is a Ghanaian author, poet, playwright and academic, who is also a former Minister of Education in the Ghana government. Life Born in Saltpond in Ghana's Central Region, she grew up in a Fante royal household, the daughter of Nana Yaw Fama, chief of Abeadzi Kyiakor, and Maame Abasema. Aidoo was sent by her father to Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast from 1961 to 1964. The headmistress of Wesley Girls' bought her her first typewriter. After leaving high school, she enrolled at the University of Ghana in Legon and received her Bachelor of Arts in English as well as writing her first play, The Dilemma of a Ghost, in 1964. The play was published by Longman the following year, making Aidoo the first published African woman dramatist. 2 She worked in the United States of America where she held a fellowship in creative writing at Stanford University. She also served as a research fellow at the Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana, and as a Lecturer in English at the University of Cape Coast, eventually rising there to the position of Professor. Aside from her literary career, Aidoo was appointed Minister of Education under the Provisional National Defence Council in 1982. She resigned after 18 months. She has also spent a great deal of time teaching and living abroad for months at a time. She has lived in America, Britain, Germany, and Zimbabwe. Aidoo taught various English courses at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY in the early to mid 1990s. -

Many of Mohammed Dib's novels present archetypal characters who represent contrasting forces in society – good and evil. Among Dib's acclaimed works is his trilogy Alg�rie (1952-1954), which paints a portrait of the plight of the poor peasants and workers. In his poetry Dib has examined old myths and inner layers of consciousness. Some of his later novels were set in a Nordic country, that resembled Finland, where he spent extended periods of time. He also translated Finnish folktales. Mohammed Dib was born in Tlemcen, a city in western Algeria, near the border of Morocco. His father, whom Dib lost at an early age, was a carpenter. Dib was raised as a Sunni Muslim but he never attended Koranic school. At the age of fifteen, he began to write poems. His first poem was published in 1946 under the signature of Diabi. It was only after Dib learned to read and write French that he learned to read Arabic. He attended primary school, high school, and after studying for a period at the university in Tlemcen he completed his studies in the city of Oujda. Between the years 1939 and 1959 Dib worked in odd jobs – as a teacher in a primary school at Aoudj Bghal, accountant in Oujda, employee for the Algerian railways, carpet designer in a weavig factory, interpreter for the American and Allied forces from 1943 to 1944, and journalist. -

Otto Zwartjes THE ANDALUSI KHARJAS: A Courtly Counterpoint to Popular Tradition?l 1. Introduction The subject of this article is the interaction or interference of popular and courtly or 'learned elements' in Andalusi strophic poetry. Since many scholars have considered the kharjas to be manifestations of pop ular lyric, the first objective of this article is to determine to what de gree we can classify these texts as 'popular'. The second objective is to relate these texts to the 'courtly' context where they were performed. The multicultural and multilingual character of Andalusi society is re flected in Andalusi strophic poetry, as well as the rivalry between Berber and Arabic-Andalusi culture. Languages and alphabets of the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish populations were used in the final lines, the kharjas. We notice a great discrepancy in the aesthetic judgments of Andalusi Arabic strophic poetry and in its popularity in different periods. These non-classical genres are usually not included in the an thologies of prestigious literature. During the Berber dynasties this lit erary tradition reached the status of 'court literature' and we see that 'innovation' became a new 'tradition'. Later, we see even that this 'popular' poetry became the 'classical' Maghribi musical tradition. The higher esteem these poems earned in al-Andalus contributed to their wide diffusion in the Maghrib and other regions of the Islamic world. 2. The meaning of "waiting for" is to desire his reappearance desperately and looking forward to his reappearance; this waiting results from faith and it is rewarded. In addition, it has spiritual values. Waiting for him, like other religious practices, has practical aspects which is pointed out by our infallibles. Following infallibles' orders in this regard is the duty of people who live in the time of his hidden life. The book deals with the personality of the Hidden Imam, his occultation and everything related to him in an analytical and systematic manner and is penetrating in its subject and exceptional in its domain. Shaikh Saduq has presented strong arguments from the life-story of the Prophets regarding their occultation [ghaibah] to prove the occultation of the Twelfth Imam; and Ahadith have been quoted extensively from the Holy Prophet sawa and the Infallible Imams in support of the writer's contentions. -

School of History and Archaeology The Archaeology of Kuwait By Majed Almutairi A thesis submitted in fulfilment of requirements for a Ph.D. in Archaeology Supervisor: Professor Denys Pringle i Summary This thesis addresses the archaeology of Kuwait from 13000BC to the 18th century AD, to further understand its significances within the Arabian Gulf and wider world. Kuwait has witness many diverse cultures By comparing for the first time the archaeology, geography, and historical sources, I illustrate that this region has been continual inhabited and used as an important hub of social networks since its beginnings. By introducing the Ubaid civilization and their relations with other regions, we witness the first exchange and trade strategies in Kuwait. By looking at the burial mound phenomenon in Kuwait we witness a hiatus of permanent settlements and a time when people were more nomadic. The impact of these mounds resonated into later periods. Petroleum based substances play a key role in modern Kuwait; the Ubaid and the Dilmun first developed the usage of bitumen, and here we see how that created links with others in the world. Ideas move as well as people, and I demonstrate the proto-Hellenistic and Hellenistic periods in Kuwait to illustrate influences from the Mediterranean. Modern Kuwait is Islamic, and here we will investigate how and why and the speeds at which Christianity gave way to Islam, and the impacts of a different religion on the region. In highlighting Kuwait’s past, I show how the state became one of the most democratic and diverse places in the Arabian Gulf. -

Special Issue on Literature No.2 October, 2014 Pp250-260 The Algerian Literature (Elite Novel / Folk Poetry) and the Post-Colonial Discourse: Witnessing to an Intellectual Liberation Hemza BOUDERSA Higher College for Teacher Training, Constantine, Algeria Abstract The shift of African literature from oral performances and traditions to written texts was a result of the colonial discourse. Therefore, African literature can be divided into a pre-colonial literature dominated mainly by folk poetry recited by the masses and post-colonial fiction adopted greatly by the elite. Written literature refreshes its themes with borrowed oral traditions drawn from people's lives and folk songs relevant to a history peppered by a story-telling traits, riddles, and proverbs. Accordingly, the following question is raised: in what ways does the Algerian novel provide a critical approach towards a „genuine‟ intellectual decolonization? Using the history of the Algerian literature as a reference, it is noteworthy assuming the following hypothesis: the Algerian novel contributes to a far extent in the liberation of the Algerian mind. Through using a content analysis and research synthesis approaches, this study highlights whether the Algerian novel can contribute fully in the intellectual freedom of the Algerian elite. Initial findings of this paper showed that witnessing to a „Différend ‟ tackled by Jean-François Lyotard and referred to by Abd el Kader Aoudjit's book the Algerian Novel and the Colonial Discourse provides a new reading towards the matter.
