Every day, for months, a young girl sends apples over a fence at Buchenwald to a boy, an inmate of the concentration camp. Almost 15 years later, Herman was living and working in New York City. A friend set him up on a blind date with a woman named Roma Radzika. Herman says he was immediately drawn to her. When they began talking about their lives, Roma asked Herman where he was during World War II. "I said, 'In a concentration camp,'" he says. "And then she says, 'I came to a camp and I met a boy there and I gave him some apples and I sent them over the fence.' "And suddenly it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Dean A Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy Approved April 2012 by the Graduate Supervisory Committee: David William Foster, Chair Claudia Sadowski-Smith Angelita Reyes ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2012 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines U. S. American intergenerational witnesses to the Holocaust, particularly how addressees turned addressors maintain an ethical obligation to First Generation witnesses while creating an affective relation to this history for new generations. In response to revisionism and the incommunicability of the Holocaust, a focus on (accurate) First Generation testimony emerged that marginalizes that of intergenerational witnesses. The risk of such a position is that it paralyzes language, locking the addressee into a movement always into the past. Using examples of intergenerational witnesses (moving from close to more distant relationships), this project argues that there is a possibility for ethical intergenerational response. There are two major discussion arcs that the work follows: self-reflexivity and the use of the Banality of Evil as a theme. Self- reflexivity in intergenerational witnessing calls attention to the role of the author as transgenerational witness, an act that does not seek to appropriate the importance or position of the Holocaust survivor because it calls attention to a subjective site in relation to the survivor and the communities of memory created within the text. The other major discussion arc moves from traditional depictions of the Banality of Evil to ones that challenge the audience to consider the way evil is conceptualized after the Holocaust and its implications in contemporary life.

  • Origins and Development of Historical Revisionism
Origins and Development of Historical Revisionism False testimony portrayed as truth and the double standards of the anti “anti-Semitism” lobby Origins of Historical Revisionism 1. French Communist Paul Rassinier was interned at Buchenwald and several other concentration camps during WW2. He was the world's first Holocaust Revisionist. His works are now largely surpassed by the recent progress of modern WW2 Revisionism, however it is worth citing a phrase from his book Le drame des juifs européens, with particular reference to the unreliability of eyewitness testimony (Paris 1964, p. 79, https://www.amazon.fr/Paul-Rassinier-Drame-Juifs- europ%C3%A9ens/dp/B0014QCHQO): “Each time when I was told during the last fifteen years that there was a witness in the part of Europe not occupied by the Soviets who claimed to have experienced a gassing himself, I immediately travelled to him in order to listen to his testimony. But in every case it ended the same way: With my folder in my hands, I asked the witness a series of precise questions, to which he could respond only with quite obvious lies, so that he finally had to admit that he had not experienced it himself, but that he had related only the story of a good friend, who had died during his internment and whose honesty he could not question. That way I travelled thousands upon thousands of miles throughout all of Europe.” Development of Revisionism; scholarly critique of Revisionism; doubts increase regards the alleged use of Zyklon B in “gas chambers” for the mass extermination of Jews in Nazi Germany 2.

  • Holocaust Deception in Australia: a Review
Forensic Research & Criminology International Journal Review Article Open Access Holocaust deception in Australia: a review Abstract Volume 2 Issue 5 - 2016 Is Holocaust deception an event sui generis, or merely another incarnation of deception, a universal phenomenon that assumes multiple guises depending on the social environment? Robert M Kaplan Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong, The worst aspect of Holocaust deception, one that puts it on a scale sliding towards Australia Holocaust denial, is that it devalues the experience of the victims and survivors. It raises a special question as a corollary: why would anyone want to claim or exaggerate Holocaust Correspondence: Robert M Kaplan, Graduate School of experiences that never occurred? The Holocaust is an event of such magnitude that the Medicine, University of Wollongong, PO Box 316, Thirroul, NSW establishment of a finite truth for those involved will always be problematic. While not in 2515, Australia, Tel (+61) 2 4268 3949, the same category as the cases listed above, there is deception displayed by some leading Email figures involved in portraying the Holocaust. Received: July 07, 2016 | Published: August 26, 2016 In conclusion, Holocaust deception is the most visible aspect of a growing phenomenon, namely seeking heroic status by claiming involvement in traumatic events. One certainty is that, in the age of social media and the internet, such behaviour will continue to flourish. This paper reviews cases seen in Australia, with additional cases from elsewhere - eg., USA - that illustrate the theme of Holocaust deception. Other cases that illustrate the difficulty in establishing finite truth in an event like the Holocaust are listed in the Discussion with several examples to indicate how widespread the phenomenon is of deceptively claiming heroism from involvement with traumatic events.

  • False Memoir Syndrome Sue Vice
False Memoir Syndrome Sue Vice In this paper, I will consider what seems to be a recent plethora of false Holocaust testimonies. These are of two different kinds: entirely fictional, and partially embellished. Under the former heading fall Binjamin Wilkomirski’s Fragments (1995), Bernard Holstein’s Stolen Soul (2004) and Misha Defonseca’s Surviving with Wolves (2004); under the latter Deli Strummer’s A Personal Reflection of the Holocaust (1988) and Herman Rosenblat’s Angel at the Fence (which was scheduled for publication in 2009 but withdrawn), as well as Martin Gray’s earlier augmented work, For Those I Loved (1971). I will ask whether these texts should be considered as part of a general cultural study of false memoirs (such as James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces and Margaret Jones’s Love and Consequences) but will argue that false and embellished Holocaust testimony does fall into a separate category. While it may be true that Holocaust fakes are created by a particular climate of publication and marketing, these inauthentic works also cast light on Holocaust literature and testimony in general, in terms of what readers expect of such works and whether Holocaust testimony is a literary genre which can be imitated like any other. I will conclude by arguing that these false memoirs are in fact very useful texts which allow us to consider what happens as the Holocaust passes from an event in living memory to one that is in the past. Sue Vice is Professor of English Literature at the University of Sheffield, UK. Her recent publications include Holocaust Fiction (2000) and Children Writing the Holocaust (2004).
