Por causas ajenas a nuestra voluntad, la aparición de este número se ha demorado bastante; pero tenemos la firme convicción de que la calidad de sus artículos hará que nuestro exigente público valore, en su justa medida, el esfuerzo que supone elaborar una revis- ta de estas características. En este número iniciamos una nueva fase. Nuestro principal objetivo, en la misma línea que en los anteriores números de la revista, es proporcionar al investigador artículos novedosos y con un contenido rigurosamente científico. Para ello contamos con un Consejo Asesor y un Consejo de Redacción, ambos integrados por profesores de reconocido prestigio, tanto españoles como egipcios. La novedad en este aspecto radica en que hemos ampliado el ámbi- to temático al incorporar especialidades como la lingüística, la literatura comparada y la literatura española tratada por hispanis- tas egipcios. Por otro lado, de forma acorde con las nuevas tendencias en las revistas científicas, hemos modificado nuestras normas de edición, al objeto de unificar aspectos formales como la transcripción fonética de los caracteres árabes y la extensión y la presentación de los artí- culos, que van precedidos de un resumen y unas palabras clave. No obstante, por lo que respecta a la extensión, como podrán ustedes comprobar, el objetivo no se ha podido cumplir debido a que los artí- culos que aparecen en este número fueron redactados con anteriori- dad a la implantación de las mencionadas normas. 00 Primeras paginas_Maquetación 1 15/12/11 13:04 Página 10 Asimismo, quiero destacar que, a partir de ahora, el nuevo forma- to de la revista presenta varias secciones. A los tradicionales artícu- los científicos se suman conferencias, reseñas bibliográficas y recen- siones de libros. De esta forma pretendemos dar un carácter más dinámico y de mayor actualidad a nuestra publicación. El volumen XXXVII es una miscelánea en la que el lector podrá disfrutar de una temática muy variada: trabajos sobre política, lin- güística comparada, sociología, sufismo islámico, literatura españo- la, arqueología islámica etc., una pequeña muestra de la inmensidad de aspectos que abarca el estudio de nuestra cultura pasada, presen- te y, en cierto modo, también futura. An account of the reconquest of the Sudan en el que se describe minuciosamente las campañas militares británicas y la “reconquista” del Sudán. El propósito de este ensayo es es- tudiar la obra de Churchill, su estructura, sus análisis de las ba- tallas, sus descripciones de las estrategias castrenses y las campañas militares británicas en el Sudán, sus opiniones parti- culares, sus aseveraciones imperialistas y aquellas teñidas de racismo y discriminación. Asimismo se analiza la traducción al árabe, que tiene grandes logros pero también algunos problemas, equivocaciones y omisiones. Todo esto es con el afán de obtener un claro panorama de la versión al árabe de The River War. Fi- nalmente se estudiará en este trabajo el gran debate historiográ- fico entre los historiadores egipcios y los sudaneses en torno a si ambas regiones deben estar unidas, o si deben permanecer separadas. ¿Fue la participación de Muhammad ‘Ali en el Sudán en sus campañas de 1820-1821 una misión “civilizadora”, como 1 Winston Churchill, The River War. The Sufis of Islam claim to present the real and original picture of Islam especially emphasizing the purity of heart and inner-self. To realize this objective they resort to various practices including meditation, love with fellow beings and service for mankind. The present article tries to explore the origin of Sufism, its gradual evolution and culmination. It also seeks to shed light on the characteristics of the Sufis of the different periods or generations as well as their ideas and approaches. Moreover, it discusses the contributions of the different Sufi Shaykhs as well as Sufi orders or Silsilahs, Qadiriyya, Suhrwardiyya, Naqshbandiyya, Kubraviyya and particularly the Chishtiyya. This has been in large part due to its defining role in the Qurʾān and ḥadīths, and no less because it stands as the opposite of pride (kibr)—the cardinal sin of both Iblīs and Pharaoh in Scripture. By drawing on the literature of Sufism or taṣawwuf from its formative period to the 20th century—spanning the writ- ings of such figures as al-Makkī (d. 386/996), al-Qushayrī (d. 465/1072), Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 638/1240), Rūmī (d. 672/1273), al-Sha⁠ʿrānī (d. 973/1565), al-Darqāwī (d. 1239/1823), and al-Sharnūbī (d. 1348/1929)—the article examines the defining characteristics of this virtue, its marks or signs, and the dangers that lie in its embodiment. In the pro- cess, we shall see how humility occupies a place somewhere in between pride, conceit, and self-admiration, on the one hand, and self-loathing, self-denigration, and outright self-hatred, on the other. Although humility is, in theory, to be exercised towards both God and other human beings, the precise nature of its embodiment, as we might expect, varies in relation to both. The article ends with an epilogue on what it means to transcend humility altogether.
