Lessons From the Lives of the Sahabiyaat (Lesson 4) Fatimah bint al-Khattab The Sister of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them) A Woman of High Status One of the excellent qualities of Fatimah bint al-Khattab is that her story is always mentioned whenever the story of her brother, Umar's Islam is narrated. She was the sister of Umar and the wife if Sa'eed ibn Zayd (radhiAllahu anhu), a great Companion and one of the ten who were given the glad tiding of Paradise. It is enough an honor and glory for her and her husband, that Allah make them the cause of Umar's acceptance of Islam. Allah guides whomever He wants to the straight path. The story of Umar’s Embracing Islam Umar was sitting down in the company of some Qurayshi chiefs chatting away in the courtyard of the Ka`bah. They were troubled with the spread of Muhammad's call, the increase in the rank of his followers and their steadfastness and audacity in making fool of the Qurayshi idols like al-Lat, al-'Uzza, al-Manat and others. 'Umar became extremely enraged. He stood up from the gathering and decided then and there to kill Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and spare the Quraysh the embarrassment that his religion had caused them and the havoc it had wreaked upon their unity where members of the same family had become disunited. On his way to the Prophet's place, a man from Banu Makhzum met him and perceived the rage in his face. -

AL ALBAB Volume 6 Number 1 June 2017 WOMEN POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN THE ERA OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD: Study on the Hadith Transmitters of the Women Companions Zunly Nadia STAISPA Yogyakarta Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Most of Moslem societies define the role of woman in the purely domestic sector. Some people consider that Islam stands against women’s role in public sectors believing that it has roots in the context of the prophet’s time. This work shows that there is no prohibitation for woman to take parts in the public and social affairs including in the area of political role. It was the case that some women companions of the prophet participated in the political role including Aisyah the wife of Nabi Saw, Asma binti Abu Bakar, Ummu Athiyah, Ummu Hani’ and Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awidz. In this paper, the writer focuses on woman companion hadith transmitters who are directly wrapped up in the missionary work with the prophet. In addition, this paper also shows the relation between woman com- panion transmitter activities and their hadith transmission, under assumption that the role of woman would influence the texts of the transmitted hadiths. It is because, as a text, hadith was transmitted in the certain context and condition. Accordingly, every transmitter had different hadith transmission based on her context, status, profession, and even gender construction. Therefore, this paper discusses the woman companion transmitters who play their role in the field of politics and also their influence in their transmitted hadiths. Ahmad Dean: Faculty of Arabic Language, Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Brunei Darussalam ABSTRACT In this article we introduced first the ancient history of Arabian Peninsula, and pre-Islamic era and then we focused a spot light on the people of Arabian Peninsula, highlighting the four waves of migration of Semitic Arabs from the southern to northern Arabian Peninsula, then we mentioned the situation of Northern Arabs and their tribal fanaticism, then we differentiated between Qahtaniyya and Adnaniyya Arab tribes including their three Classes: Destroyed Arab, Original Arab and Arabized Arab. We also explained the tribal system in the pre-Islamic era, indicating the status of four pillars of the tribal system: 1. Integration and alliance among the tribes 2. Tribal Senate or Parliament 3. Tribes and sovereignty over the tribes 4. Members of the tribes and their duties towards their tribal society In the end we described the master of Arab tribe who was the brightest person had a long experience and often had inherited his sovereignty from his fathers to achieve a high status, but it does not mean that he had a broad sovereignty, as his sovereignty was symbolic. -
The Relationship Between Arabic Alla¯H and Syriac Alla¯Ha¯1
The relationship between Arabic Alla¯h and Syriac Alla¯ha¯ 1 David Kiltz Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, Potsdam Abstract Various etymologies have been proposed for Arabic allah but also for Syriac allaha. It has often been proposed that the Arabic word was borrowed from Syriac. This article takes a comprehensive look at the linguistic evidence at hand. Es- pecially, it takes into consideration more recent epigraphical material which sheds light on the development of the Arabic language. Phonetic and morphological analysis of the data confirms the Arabic origin of the word allah, whereas the prob- lems of the Syriac form allaha are described, namely that the Syriac form differs from that of other Aramaic dialects and begs explanation, discussing also the possi- bility that the Syriac word is a loan from Arabic. The final part considers qur#anic allah in its cultural and literary context and the role of the Syriac word in that con- text. The article concludes, that both, a strictly linguistic, as well as cultural and literary analysis reveals a multilayered interrelation between the two terms in ques- tion. The linguistic analysis shows, that Arabic allah must be a genuinely Arabic word, whereas in the case of Syriac allaha, the possibility of both, a loan and a spe- cific inner-Aramaic development are laid out. Apart from linguistic considerations, the historical and cultural situation in Northern Mesopotamia, i.e. the early Arab presence in that region is taken into scrutiny. In turn, a possible later effect of the prominent use of Syriac allaha on the use in the Qur#an is considered. -

ON THE TRUTHFULNESS OF ABU HURAYRAH IN NARRATING HADITH By: Badri Khaeruman∗ ABSTRAK Artikel ini membincangkan keotoritian Abu Hurayrah r.a. sebagai perawi Hadith mencakupi dua pandangan yang bertentangan antara satu dengan yang lain. Pandangan pertama cuba mempertikaikan keotoritian beliau dengan mengemukakan pelbagai alasan dan kritikan terhadap beliau, manakala pandangan kedua mempertahankan keotoritian dan keabsahan beliau sebagai perawi Hadith yang bertanggungjawab dan jujur dengan mengemukakan pelbagai bukti bagi menyokong pandangan tersebut. Hasil daripada perbincangan yang diutarakan membuktikan Abu Hurayrah r.a. adalah seangkatan dan setaraf dengan sahabat-sahabat Baginda Rasulullah s.a.w. yang lain dalam keotoritiannya meriwayatkan Hadith dan beliau tidak pernah melakukan perkara yang boleh menggugat keabsahan beliau sebagai perawi. INTRODUCTION The acceptance of the Companions (Sahabah) of the Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is not equal in the heart of the ummah (Muslim community). It is because of human capacity of them, so that there are some differences of acceptance.
