CONFERENCE THE THEOLOGY OF WORK AND THE DIGNITY OF WORKERS FOREWORD DAVID L. GREGORYt On All Souls' Day, November 2, 1987, Cesar Chavez, founder of the National Farm Workers Association-later, the United Farm Workers ("UFW")-discussed the evils of pesticides with a standing-room-only audience at St. John's University. Despite sharp disagreements between their union and the UFW in that era, even officials from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters joined the crowd in applause and lauded Chavez for his moving words. Afterward, Cesar told me that his brief sojourn at St. John's had been one of the most gratifying, engaging days he had enjoyed in years. A quarter-century later, on March 18 and 19 of 2011, St. John's was the site of another landmark event: the Conference- and subject of this Symposium Volume of the Journal of Catholic Legal Studies-"The Theology of Work and the Dignity of Workers."' Clergy, scholars, union representatives, and attorneys from diverse-even divergent-perspectives gathered for dialogue and exchange regarding the singular adversities facing workers around the world today.

It is my intuition that ‘the annunciation’ is just around the corner; that is an announcement from Rome - not from the Angel Gabriel, but from the Cardinal ‘Angel’ (Angelo) Amato, Head of the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints – an announcement that our beloved Servant of God, Oscar Romero, will be raised to the altars during 2015. Oremus! Archbishop Romero is not only the most famous Salvadoran of our times, but also the most loved and simultaneously the most hated. Nevertheless it seems entirely fitting to me to adapt the words from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, “he was the noblest Salvadoran of them all”. Indeed today he is recognised as such, repeatedly acclaimed by President Funes as the ‘spiritual guide of the nation’ - with monuments and memorials in almost every town and village in El Salvador. He has been described as a national treasure. As a holy prophet and martyr, Oscar Romero is, I would suggest, a precious diamond, who adds a special redemptive lustre to the universal Church of the 20th century. For over 30 years, however, Archbishop Romero’s detractors inside the Church have tried to paint a picture of him as a rather cheap fake diamond - naïve, vain, manipulated, doctrinally heterodox and politically extreme. (In truth they feared Romero’s canonisation might be interpreted as the canonisation of liberation theology.) And they are still not finished - even though their curial leader, the Colombian Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, has now gone to that great dicastery in the sky, with God.

McCarty, C.Ss.R., a member of the Baltimore Province of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, encompasses letters, manuscripts (including memoirs), notebooks, articles, news clippings, and photographs, dating from c. 1889 to as late as 1973, the year following his death. The collection is especially important—however partial—for research on the history of the Catholic Church in Rapid City, South Dakota, and for his activities as the Military Delegate. Of particular interest are the numbers of items related to the Indian missions. The entirety of the collection is open to qualified researchers. Consultation of these materials will be at the discretion of the Province Archivist. Biography: William Tiburtus (sometimes Tiburtius; in his own autobiography it is Tiburtus) McCarty was born August 11, 1889, on a farm a short distance from Crossingville, Pennsylvania, to Timothy C. and Margaret (neé Burns) McCarty. At birth he weighed a mere 3 pounds and the midwife baptized him on the spot. The next Sunday, however, a more formal, though conditional, baptism took place in the Church of St. Philip in Crossingville, where his parents had been married in September 1875. He was the third and last of the couple’s three children, which included Maryanne and Frank. Three brothers predeceased William—John, Jeremiah, and James—all of whom died in infancy. From 1880 until her death in 1891, his mother was an invalid who could barely get out of bed.

    Revised 3/11/2019 HISTORY OF THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC COMMITTEE FOR GIRL SCOUTS AND CAMP FIRE By Virginia Reed The present National Catholic Committee for Girl Scouts and Camp Fire dates back to the early days of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) and the National Catholic Welfare Conference. Although it has functioned in various capacities and under several different names, this committee's purpose has remained the same: to minister to the Catholic girls in Girl Scouts (at first) and Camp Fire (since 1973). Beginnings The relationship between Girl Scouting and Catholic youth ministry is the result of the foresight of Juliette Gordon Low. Soon after founding the Girl Scout movement in 1912, Low traveled to Baltimore to meet James Cardinal Gibbons and consult with him about her project. Five years later, Joseph Patrick Cardinal Hayes of New York appointed a representative to the Girl Scout National Board of Directors. The cardinal wanted to determine whether the Girl Scout program, which was so fine in theory, was equally sound in practice. Satisfied on this point, His Eminence publicly declared the program suitable for Catholic girls. In due course, the four U.S. Cardinals and the U.S. Catholic hierarchy followed suit. In the early 1920's, Girl Scout troops were formed in parochial schools and Catholic women eagerly became leaders in the program. When CYO was established in the early 1930's, Girl Scouting became its ally as a separate cooperative enterprise. In 1936, sociologist Father Edward Roberts Moore of Catholic charities, Archdiocese of New York, studied and approved the Girl Scout program because it was fitting for girls to beome "participating citizens in a modern, social democracy." This support further enhanced the relationship between the Catholic church and Girl Scouting.

It concerns itself with topics pertaining to the spiritual doctrine and practice of Jesuits, especially United States Jesuits, and communicates the results to the members of the provinces through its publication, STUDIES IN THE SPIRITUALITY OF JESUITS. This is done in the spirit of Vatican Li's recommendation that religious institutes recapture the original inspiration of their founders and adapt it to the circumstances of modern times. The Seminar welcomes reactions or comments in regard to the material that it publishes. The Seminar focuses its direct attention on the life and work of the Jesuits of the United States. The issues treated may be common also to Jesuits of other regions, to other priests, religious, and laity, to both men and women. His vocation, as a Professed Knight of the Order, was to care for the poor and the sick, and to demonstrate this inspiration through his deep Christian spirituality. He lived modestly, with humility and with intense faith.
