Previous meetings • Genk and Thun are meeting for the first time in what is also Thun's first encounter with Belgian opponents. • Genk's six previous games against Swiss clubs have ended W3 D2 L1 (W2 D1 L0 at home – W1 D1 L1 in Switzerland). Four of those matches came last season; Genk beat FC Luzern in the play-offs then drew twice against FC Basel 1893 in the group stage. They are yet to concede a goal at home against Swiss opponents. • Belgian sides have traditionally come off slightly the worse in their 43 past meetings with Swiss opponents, with the Belgian clubs' record reading W14 D11 L17 (W8 D8 L7 at home – W6 D4 L10 in Switzerland). Match background • Last season Genk made it through to the round of 32 unbeaten on what was their UEFA Europa League group stage debut, topping their section with three wins and three draws. • Genk won 1-0 at FC Dynamo Kyiv on matchday one to get their Group G campaign off to a positive start; they have won all three of their European games this season and have yet to lose a group stage home fixture (W2 D1). • Thun are competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the first time, having lost to Stoke City FC in the play-offs two years ago. They memorably made it to the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League group stage, finishing third in their section to earn a transfer to the UEFA Cup round of 32, where they lost to Hamburger SV. • Thun beat SK Rapid Wien 1-0 at home on matchday one, but they have yet to win an away group stage fixture (D1 L2). Team facts • Thun's Finnish forward Berat Sadik has experience of Belgian football having spent the 2009/10 season on loan at SV Zulte Waregem during his time at DSC Arminia Bielefeld. He made a late cameo appearance in a 2-2 draw at Genk on 19 December 2009. Genk's Trinidiadian midfielder Khaleem Hyland was among his team-mates. • KSV Waterschei, who merged with KFC Winterslag to form Genk in 1988, reached the semi-finals of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, losing out to Sir Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen FC. Coach information • Hired in August 2011, Dutchman Mario Been won his first trophy as Genk coach when he guided his side to the 2012/13 Belgian Cup. An attacking midfielder, 'Mariodona' played for home-town club Feyenoord, Pisa Calcio, Roda JC, sc Heerenveen, FC Tirol Innsbruck and another Rotterdam side, SBV Excelsior. He subsequently coached both Excelsior and Feyenoord either side of leading NEC Nijmegen through the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. • Urs Fischer took charge of Thun in November 2012 following a long spell working with FC Zürich, where he was in charge of various youth teams before becoming assistant and then senior coach. The centre-back made a record 545 Swiss league appearances – over 300 of them for Zürich where he played his first and last games. In between he captained FC St Gallen and was capped four times by Switzerland. 3 KRC Genk - FC Thun Thursday 3 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit KRC Genk Arena, Genk Team facts KRC Genk Formed: 1988 Nickname: Genkies UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • none Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 3 (2011) Belgian Cup: 4 (2013) Ten-year record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: round of 32 2011/12: UEFA Champions League group stage 2010/11: play-offs 2009/10: play-offs 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA competition 2007/08: UEFA Champions League second qualifying round 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA competition 2005/06: first round 2004/05: UEFA Intertoto Cup semi-finals 2003/04: did not take part in UEFA competition Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 5-0: Genk v MSV Duisburg 01/10/98, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-5: B36 Tórshavn v Genk 21/06/97, UEFA Intertoto Cup group stage • Heaviest home defeat 2-5: Genk v SV Werder Bremen 09/11/00, second round second leg 0-3: Genk v FC Porto 19/08/10, play-offs first leg • Heaviest away defeat 7-0: Valencia CF v Genk 23/11/11, UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 5-2: Genk v FH Hafnarfjördur 29/08/13, play-off second leg 3-0: Genk v Videoton FC 20/09/12, group stage 3-0: Genk v FHK Liepājas Metalurgs 25/08/05, second qualifying round second leg • Biggest away win 1-5: FC Inter Turku v Genk 29/07/10, third qualifying round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 2-5: Genk v SV Werder Bremen (see above) 0-3: Genk v FC Porto (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-1: SV Werder Bremen v Genk 24/10/00, second round first leg 4 KRC Genk - FC Thun Thursday 3 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit KRC Genk Arena, Genk FC Thun Formed: 1898 Nickname: Oberländer (Oberlanders) UEFA club competition honours • None Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) None Ten-year record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2012/13: did not take part in UEFA competition 2011/12: play-offs 2010/11: did not take part in UEFA competition 2009/10: did not take part in UEFA competition 2008/09: did not take part in UEFA competition 2007/08: did not take part in UEFA competition 2006/07: did not take part in UEFA competition 2005/06: round of 32 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League group stage) 2004/05: UEFA Intertoto Cup third round 2003/04: UEFA Intertoto Cup second round Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 4-1: Thun v VfL Wolfsburg 11/07/04, UEFA Intertoto Cup second round second leg 3-0 twice, most recently v FK Partizan 29/08/13, UEFA Europa League play-off second leg • Biggest away win 1-3: FC Chikhura Sachkhere v Thun 25/07/13, UEFA Europa League second qualifying round second leg • Heaviest home defeat 2-4: Thun v AFC Ajax 02/11/05, UEFA Cup group stage • Heaviest away defeat 4-1: Stoke City FC v Thun 25/08/11, UEFA Europa League play-off second leg UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 3-0 twice, most recently v FK Partizan (see above) • Biggest away win 1-3: FC Chikhura Sachkere v Thun (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 2-4: Thun v AFC Ajax (see above) • Heaviest away defeat 4-1: Stoke City FC v Thun (see above) 5 KRC Genk - FC Thun Thursday 3 October 2013 - 19.00CET, (19.00 local time) Match press kit KRC Genk Arena, Genk Squad list KRC Genk Current season All-time QUAL Tournament League Tournament UEFA No. Player Nat.
