The primary focus of research interest in this fourth monograph in the Studia musicologica Labacensia collection, entitled The conservatories: professionalisation and specialisation of musical activity: On the centenary of the founding of the Ljubljana Conservatory and the 80th anniversary of the Music Academy in Ljubljana, is the activity of the Conservatory in Lju- bljana, founded in 1919, and its successor the Music Academy, founded two decades later, and of similar musical institutions in Europe before and be- tween the two world wars. The papers in the monograph are divided into three thematic groups. The first groupThe ( functioning of music conservatories in Europe before and between the two world wars) looks at some important milestones in the development of conservatories before and after the First World War, with a primary focus on the development of higher music education in the light of the societal changes that took place in the interwar period. It also con- siders degrees of institutionalisation and state control and examines peda- gogical approaches and the concert repertoire of conservatory productions. 9 konservatoriji: profesionalizacija in specializacija glasbenega dela The second group The( development of post-secondary and higher mu- sic education between the two world wars in Slovenia) devotes particular at- tention to institutions providing higher music education in Slovenia in this period and their role in the development of individual subject fields. It also examines pedagogical concepts and approaches to teaching and the insti- tutional changes that saw the Conservatory become the Music Academy. The third group Higher( music education among the southern Slavs after 1918) focuses its attention on connections or differences within the “new” higher education area encompassing the lands of the southern Slavs and examines teaching methods within individual music disciplines. The end of 1918 was one of the key turning points in the recent histo- ry of Europe. The period was marked by the political transformation of Eu- rope and the emergence of a number of new states. For Slovenes, too, this period was of historic importance at multiple levels. The break with the old monarchy was symbolically illustrated by the events surrounding the final concert of the “German” Philharmonic Society at the Tonhalle (today the home of the Slovenian Philharmonic) on 25 October 1918. Three days later, the constituent assembly of the National Council, the body that was to lead the Slovenes into the new era, took place just across the square in the palace of the provincial government, today the seat of the University of Ljubljana. Then, on 29 October 1918, at a vast gathering in Congress Square, the Slo- venes bade farewell to the disintegrating monarchy to which they had be- longed for more than 600 years, and, together with the Croats and Serbs, formed a new State of the South Slavs, which became the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes on 1 December of the same year. The end of ties with the Habsburgs and the resulting new geographi- cal, political, economic, cultural and linguistic environment also had a

Avgust se je že prevesil v drugo polovico in počasi si bo treba otreti pesek s stopal in stopiti z zibajočega objema počitnic v prvi septembrski dan. DVE DOMOVINI • TWO HOMELANDS • 49 • 2019 DOI: 10.3986/dd.v0i49.7261 POST-WAR URBANISM ALONG THE CONTESTED BORDER: SOME OBSERVATIONS ON KOPER/CAPODISTRIA AND TRIESTE/TRST Neža ČEBRON LIPOVEC | COBISS 1.01 ABSTRACT Post-War Urbanism along the Contested Border: Some Observations on Koper/Capo- distria and Trieste/Trst The article presents observations from recent architectural historical research on the post-war construction of Slovene coastal towns. The urban planning concepts that formed the “Slovenian Coast” and followed the migration processes are explored. The solutions for the Slovenian Coast are compared with contemporary urban plans for Trieste, set in a larger historical framework. Certain interventions in “ethnically pure” locations (new settlements called ‘borghi’ on the Karst boundary surrounding Trieste; new construction in the Venetian core of Capodistria) are highlighted, and approaches in the design of new urban areas and two symbolic spaces of representa- tions on both sides of the border are compared. KEY WORDS: post-war urbanism, symbolic marking of space, Koper/Capodistria, Tri- este/Trst, border IZVLEČEK Povojni urbanizem ob sporni meji: Nekaj opažanj o Kopru/Capodistria in Trstu/ Trieste Prispevek predstavlja opažanja iz nedavne arhitekturnozgodovinske raziskave o po- vojni izgradnji slovenskih obmorskih mest.

  • Franz Schmidt
Franz Schmidt (1874 – 1939) was born in Pressburg, now Bratislava, a citizen of the Austro- Hungarian Empire and died in Vienna, a citizen of the Nazi Reich by virtue of Hitler's Anschluss which had then recently annexed Austria into the gathering darkness closing over Europe. Schmidt's father was of mixed Austrian-Hungarian background; his mother entirely Hungarian; his upbringing and schooling thoroughly in the prevailing German-Austrian culture of the day. In 1888 the Schmidt family moved to Vienna, where Franz enrolled in the Conservatory to study composition with Robert Fuchs, cello with Ferdinand Hellmesberger and music theory with Anton Bruckner. He graduated "with excellence" in 1896, the year of Bruckner's death. His career blossomed as a teacher of cello, piano and composition at the Conservatory, later renamed the Imperial Academy. As a composer, Schmidt may be seen as one of the last of the major musical figures in the long line of Austro-German composers, from Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler. His four symphonies and his final, great masterwork, the oratorio Das Buch mit sieben Siegeln (The Book with Seven Seals) are rightly seen as the summation of his creative work and a "crown jewel" of the Viennese symphonic tradition. Das Buch occupied Schmidt during the last years of his life, from 1935 to 1937, a time during which he also suffered from cancer – the disease that would eventually take his life. In it he sets selected passages from the last book of the New Testament, the Book of Revelation, tied together with an original narrative text.

  • Ferdinand Weinschenk (1831-1910), Pivotal Figure in German Trumpet History
10 HISTORIC BRASS SOCIETY JOURNAL FERDINAND WEINSCHENK (1831-1910), PIVOTAL FIGURE IN GERMAN TRUMPET HISTORY EDWARD H. TARR During research for my study, East Meets West,1 I spent a year and a half systematically reading through nineteenth-century German music periodicals. My original hope was to discover information about Russian trumpeters, or about Western trumpeters active in Russia, such as Oskar Böhme, Willy Brandt, Eduard Seifert, and Wilhelm Wurm. Although my reading did reveal a certain amount of information concerning these fi gures, it yielded a surprising amount about Seifert’s teacher, (Christian) Ferdinand Weinschenk, who also has the distinction of having been the dedicatee of Böhme’s Trumpet Concerto, Op. 11, in 1899. (Seifert, who lived from 1870 to 1965, was the famed principal trumpeter of the Dresden Königlich-Musikalische Kapelle, later Staatskapelle. He graduated from the Leipzig Conservatory nearly three years before Oskar Böhme entered, playing W. Herfurth’s Concer- tino in E on his graduation recital on 30 January 1894. Böhme attended the Conservatory for a yearf as a composition student, between 2 November 1896 and 1 December 1897.)2 Weinschenk is a pivotal fi gure in German trumpet history because he was not only a noted orchestral performer, with a special talent for performing the high trumpet parts of Bach and Handel, but also a highly successful teacher, many of whose students went on to oc- cupy important positions in European and even American orchestras. Christian Ferdinand Weinschenk was born on 4 November 1831 in Ritteburg (Saxony) and entered the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (the correct title of which at that time was actually Municipal Orchestra = Stadtorchester) on 1 JJulyuly 1861 as 2nd trtrumpeter, umpeter, advadvancingancing to 1st on 1 October 1867; from 1 September 1864 he was also the treasurer (Fiskal) of the orchestra’s pension institute.3 Thirty years later, when the noted conductor Arthur Nikisch (1855-1922) took over from his predecessor Dr.

In diesen Teichen leben reichlich.
