Fu nell’oc- casione del ritrovamento di questo nucleo di disegni che i partecipanti al progetto si proposero di applicare il metodo impiegato nel predisporre il materiale raccolto nel libro FIAT, storie di innovazione tecnologica nelle automobili, anche per preparare un libro analogo dedicato alle automobili Lancia. Questo secondo libro, attraverso l’esame dei disegni tecnici, del materiale d’archivio e delle fotografie di automobili sopravvissute, illustra l’evoluzione delle vetture Lancia e i loro contenuti innovativi, spesso caratterizzati da elementi di assoluta originalità. Il reperimento del materiale si è mostrato, tuttavia, più arduo rispetto al lavoro sulle vetture FIAT, almeno per le automobili più anziane, poiché l’archivio dei disegni Lancia era organizzato senza impiegare una struttura logica di supporto, per distinguere agevolmente i diversi gruppi funzionali dai particolari di puro dettaglio. -

LANCIA DELTA INTEGRALE High Fidelity Ein Blick zurück in die “Fiat-Epoche“ von Lancia und die Geschichte des Delta Integrale Text: Alexander Korab Bilder: Mathias Kniepeiss und Wolfgang Buchta Der Lancia Delta Integrale kam vor etwas mehr als 30 Jahren auf den Markt und ist somit ein frischgebackener Oldtimer. Der Name “Integrale“ ist heute zum Mythos ge- worden. In den 80er Jahren, als der Auflösungs- prozess der UdSSR begann, als Personal-Com- puter, Compact-Disk und Mobiltelefon die Welt eroberten, als man zu Hits von Depeche Mode, U2 oder Falco tanzte und die Berliner Mauer fiel, dominierte der Delta die Rallye-Szene wie kein anderes Fahrzeug davor und danach. Auf manchen Sonderprüfungen sind die feschen Allradler noch heute flott unterwegs, obwohl Vincenzo Lancia sie eigentlich schon ein paar Jährchen auf dem (1881-1937) Buckel haben. Um ihre Entstehungsgeschichte näher zu beleuchten, müssen wir doch ein wenig weiter ausholen. Für Fundamentalisten endet die Geschichte von Lancia in der letzten Oktoberwoche des Jahres 1969, als Fiat-Boss Gianni Agnelli die Über- nahme des 1906 gegründeten Traditionsunter- nehmens bekannt gab. Sicherlich, die berühmte “Marke der Ingenieure“ war damit so gut wie tot. Lancia wurde in den mächtigen Fiat-Kon- zern eingegliedert und Neuentwicklungen wie- sen von da an Gemeinsamkeiten mit Fiat-Mo- Gianni Lancia dellen auf. Wer jenes Kapitel der Lancia-Saga (1924-2014) etwas großzügiger betrachtete, durfte sich in den 70er, 80er und 90er Jahren aber über sensa- tionelle Siegesserien im Rallye-Sport freuen. Die Marke der Ingenieure 1937, als Fir- mengründer Vincenzo Lancia starb, galt das Unternehmen mit Sitz in Turin als Nobelmar- ke, welche besonders zuverlässige Automobile mit außergewöhnlicher Technik produzierte. -

People talented in style, craft and with entrepreneurial skills have created in Torino and Piedmont a cultural system linked to the automotive industry, overcoming production and becoming a c ultural and social phenomenon . Nowadays Piedmont’s capital city is still the place where groups of excellence from the car sector are located, developed in these years above all in the domain of training , planning and design : the IAAD (Istituto d’Arte Applicata e del Design), the IED (Istituto Europeo del Design) and the Facoltà di Disegno Industriale e di Ingegneria dell’Autoveicolo at Torino’s Polytechnic deal with the training of a new creative generation, allowing the Italian car industry to preserve its avant-garde tradition, paying careful attention to environmental sustainability. Last century’s Torino was a craftsmen city full of mechanics and coachbuilders, which then became the Italian birthplace of the new “technology prodigy” called the automobile. Torino is the playground for new companies: spawning the first 1898 Italian Automobile club, the Italian School for mechanics and drivers and the first Italian magazine almost exclusively dealing with motoring (“L’Automobile”). Originally from Torino, Ernestina Prola, was the first Italian woman to pass her driving test, and in the capital of Piedmont the first car exhibition took place, evolving into the Salone dell’automobile, in the XX century. Both creators of the two totally Italian produced cars were from Torino: Virginio Bordino (1854) and Michele Lanza (1895). -

LANCIA Lancia and Pininfarina: a couple that made their combined debut in 1930 as a result of a long antecedent. Vincenzo Lancia, a successful entrepreneur, had been a regular customer at the Stabilimenti Farina over the two previous decades as Battista Farina. Lancia decided to back it up through his own direct involvement as a minority partner. This explains why so many Lancia Dilambda Pininfarina car models began to appear within a few months of the inauguration of the new bodybuilding concern: a massive commitment, not least in financial terms, which perhaps Pinin would not have been able to cope with if left to his own resources. The long and fruitful experience of the Lambda model, then in production for eight years, had clearly demonstrated to Vincenzo Lancia that, at least where top of-the range models were concerned, the time was not ripe for relying solely on a standardized body. Thus the Dilambda and the Astura, unlike the first Lambdas, were born with a floorpan that set no constraints on the bodybuilders' creativity. Trying to carve out a market niche for his products Vincenzo Lancia was planning to add a special touch of sober elegance to models that would prove such excellent performers as to represent a valid alternative to sports cars: the latter, in fact, albeit faster in absolute terms, were necessarily more ostentatious and less comfortable. By proposing such a well balanced and efficient vehicle as the Lambda, Lancia did much to anticipate the winning features of modern cars. The Lambda was too unwieldy to face up to the demand for diversification expressed by a wealthy and markedly individualistic clientele. -

Nous aurons l'occasion de vous présenter cela lors de l'Assemblée Générale du début d'année, dont on a le projet qu'elle se tienne sur notre stand au salon Rétromobile le samedi 30 janvier à 15H00 sur le stand Lancia Héritage. LUISS TEACHING CASES Brand Development through Brand Extension and Licensing: Pininfarina Extra Marco Francesco Mazzù Luiss Guido Carli In collaboration with Pininfarina Management TEACHING CASES 2020 ISBN 978-88-6105-533-9 Introduction Year 2012 started as a key defining moment for Pininfarina Group and its future. In the eyes of the management team, the last five years have been full of hitches. A lot of personal energies have been dedicated to guide the organization through a set of diverse and serious challenges: years between 2007 and 2011 were characterized by the Global crisis of the Automotive sector, main historical focus of the group; some investments in partnership with major OEM did not reach the expected pay-off; the group has been forced to rethink its historical focus of activities, and, even more important, the dramatic death of Andrea in 2008, CEO of the Group at that time, forced an unexpected and unplanned change in leadership an internal governance, including the entrance of the first external members to Pininfarina’s family in top management position. Despite con- tinuing to succeed with its image in the market, as testified by winning several international “best designer” awards1, a strong bank intervention has been needed to guarantee company con- tinuity, and sales were not coping up with the expected level to support future growth. In addition, some of the core activities have been divested. It has been clear to the management, that the historical company focus, and the Automotive mar- ket was not anymore enough to support a healthy outlook. Something more should also be done to develop other “internal jewels” of the company as Pininfarina Extra (PFE), founded in 1986, and focused on bringing the company’s design culture and comprehension of modern life, culture and social paradigms to other categories of industrial design. -
