Possibly because the as well as the locals to ensure event was a week later than there is always something of previous years meaning people interest. Whatever the reason, accessible by the public and in a we will not know, but by contrast central location — a great model to the other marques, I would say to emulate. 2018 saw the greatest number and the most diverse array of I woke Sunday morning to the Lancia models that I have ever deep burbling of Maserati v8 seen at the event. juxtaposed against the shrill exhaust note that seems to accompany Lamborghini’s. Looking out the hotel window revealed bleak grey skies threatening rain and an accompanying chilling breeze, a complete contrast to the three previous years where I’d returned home each time from AutoItalia Canberra with a good dose of sunburn — maybe I should have packed a jacket?

Wearing the entire contents of my overnight bag (jeans, t-shirt and button up shirt over) I ventured down to the lobby where I was buoyed by the sight of a number of guests in shorts and t-shirts. Maybe they knew better than this visitor, maybe the cloud cover would burn off to reveal a glorious Autumn day? Alas no, stepping outside, the breeze was stiff and the cold cutting, I should have packed that jacket — what was I thinking!

All the main models were represented; Lambda, As an interesting postscript to AutoItalia 2018, at Aurelia, Flaminia, Flavia, Fulvia, Beta, Montecarlo, May’s Cars and Coffee I ran into Michael Polito Gamma, Delta and Thema. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t improve, the coffee’s warmed us all to briefly, the pizza boxes became sails in the gusty winds and gelato vendor was a lonely figure in his stall. The lack of facilities meant many took shelter in their cars or left early. When the Victorians (in their heavy jackets and scarfs) started complaining of the cold I decided it was time for this underdressed Queenslander to bow out and call it a day for 2018.

Lancia’s Incredible Rallying Achievement

The founder of the marque, Vincenzo Lancia was the which started in 1973. himself a talented driver on and off the track. So, it The ’s reputation as a rally-winner was inevitable the cars which bore his name would emerged. The Fanalone model was its zenith. be destined for motorsport greatness — but . surprisingly, not fully on the racetrack but in rallying. Well actually, Lancias did excel on the track, but it was rallying that really marked Lancia’s competitive edge. No other make has had the success in rallying that Lancia had — 10 WRC titles in all.

For decades, Lancia produced cars which were suited to racing on both road and track and it even competed in Formula 1 with the D50 models. It was not until the late 1950s and into the 1960s that the company turned their considerable engineering talents towards rallying. A win by in the 1954 Rally, driving an Aurelia B20 GT, gave little hint of what lay ahead. Privately sponsored competitors had also entered rally-style events with some success using Flavia as well as Aurelia models.

With the introduction of the new Fulvia coupe in 1965, Lancia embarked on serious development of this new car for rallying purposes. They entered cars in selected rallies in Europe and in the Campionato Italiano Rally (CIR or Italian Rally Championship). Then in 1967 the now 1.3L capacity Fulvia HF came second in the prestigious . And later at Corsica, Munari won in a special 1.4L version. would win the 1972 Monte in a works Fulvia 1.6L HF. The 132bhp V4 combined with nimble handling was a winning formula. In the early 1970s, financially troubled Lancia was acquired by FIAT. The feisty little 1.6L Fulvia HF was Lancia won the International Championship for now coming up against much stronger opposition Manufacturers in 1972. Parent company FIAT were also rallying their 131 models and were concerned at this major challenge to their product. FIAT had also bought the Ferrari car production sector in 1969. They interrupted the supply of 2.4L V6 Ferrari 246 and gearboxes and questioned the marketing program for the Stratos challenging their new Abarth 124 Spyder.

FIAT decided to continue using their Abarth-prepared 131 in the late 1970s and coerced many of the top WRC drivers to run cars. Drivers like Munari, Darniche, Alén were now asked to leave the Stratos for the works 131. The fact that several took every opportunity to return to the Stratos privately This frustrated Fiorio and his team to say the least and win rallies says a lot for the qualities of the and caused numerous changes to design and testing Stratos… The Stratos was the WRC king in the programs.
