1976 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale Chassis No ! 1976 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale Chassis No. 1595 Registration UFC 235P • An extremely rare opportunity to own a wonderfully original and patinated example of one of the most iconic designs of its era. • Reputedly owned by a close personal friend of Enzo Ferrari. • In its current ownership for most of its life so far having been purchased by him, from the Modena Ferrari dealership, in 1986. • Still accompanied by its original dated registration booklet, which includes Modena tax receipts from 1978 August 1982. • Accompanied by two sets of Campagnolo 14” magnesium wheels, and one set of modern Compomotive 5 spoke wheels with Yokohama tyres fitted for ease of road use. Having previously collaborated on it’s designs with Pininfarina, Lancia became the focus of Carrozzeria Bertone, who wished to do business with Lancia. Bertone set about penning a design to capture the imagination of the fellow Turninese firm. Bertone was aware that Lancia was looking for a replacement for the Fulvia with a view for use in competition, so set about creating a striking masterpiece around the running gear of a Fulvia Coupé. The product was dubbed the Stratos Zero, and Bertone himself drove it to the Lancia factory. Upon arrival, it is said that Bertone received great applause from the Lancia workers who looked upon the fascinating lines which had been created. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! Lancia was apparently impressed, and decided to work together with Bertone on the Stratos project. The Stratos Zero concept became the centre piece of Lancia’s presence at the 1970 Turin Motor Show and wowed onlookers with it’s futuristic proportions, and in turn brought exciting publicity for the manufacturer. The styling of the production Stratos was developed along the lines of the ideas held by Bertone’s designer Marcello Gandini who was no stranger to creating iconic cars in the form of the Lamborghini Miura and Countach. This was combined with chassis development from Giampaolo Dallara and ex. Ferrari F1 driver Mike Parkes. One year after the success of the Stratos Zero concept at the 1970 Turin Motor Show, Lancia lifted the cover on the Stratos HF prototype, chassis number 1240, painted in an eye-catching fluorescent red. At the time of public announcement, the Stratos HF utilised the 2.4 litre Dino Ferrari V6 engine in mid mounted configuration. Fulvia and Beta engines had been previously run in the prototype when Enzo Ferrari was reluctant to allow the use of the Dino V6 due to perceived conflict with his own model, the 246 Dino, but once the production had ceased Enzo agreed and 500 Dino V6 engines are reputed to have arrived at Lancia. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! Lancia’s desire to compete headed down the rallying route, and when production of the Stratos began in 1973, 500 cars were intended for construction in order to homologate the Stratos for Group 4 rallying. Homologated in 1974, the Stratos achieved great success, becoming World Rally Champion with Sandro Munari and Björn Waldegård. Through 1975 and ’76, Lancia’s domination continued and more World titles followed. When production of the Stratos ended, Lancia led the world to believe that 492 examples had been completed, just shy of the 500 originally required. However insiders believe that as few as 250 Stratos ever went on the road, which was largely due to the enormously high tax rates in Italy on larger capacity cars and the lack of safety compliance for the American export market. Chassis 1595 is one of the Stradale, or road, versions of the Stratos, manufactured in 1976 with scocca number 269 and was originally green with Havana interior and SAVAL Kenia brown carpets. 1595 was first registered “MI/X73169” on the 2nd November 1976 to the company S.A.M.I. in Milano. On the 1st December 1978 while in Modena, Italy, 1595 was registered “MO 441690” to “Cahorimi Rossano” and retains the dated registration booklet to this day. Within this booklet are Modena tax receipts from 1978 through to August 1982. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. [email protected] www.williamianson.com ! Also retained with 1595 are one insurance slip for Lancia Stratos MO 441690 dated 27/12/85, and a tax slip from Rome for MO 441690 dated 1st February 1986. Reputedly owned by a close personal friend of Enzo Ferrari, 1595 was for sale in a Modena Ferrari showroom in 1986, painted red over black, and was purchased at that time by the current owner. 1595 was registered in the UK on 14th May 2002, and given registration number UFC 235P. Since then, the car has been used for occasional runs, with tax and MOT renewed every year. Today, 24,695 km or 15,344 miles are shown on the speedo. Accompanying 1595 are many documents including invoices for work carried out, two sets of Campagnolo 14” magnesium wheels (one set without tyres), and one set of modern Compomotive 5 spoke wheels with Yokohama tyres fitted for ease of road use. With 1595 comes a chance to acquire a wonderfully charismatic, and genuinely patented, original Lancia Stratos HF Stradale. When driving this car it is easy to see why they were such a formidable force to be reckoned with on the World Rally circuit. Exhilarating to drive, rare, still unrestored, in its current ownership for most of its life and of one of the most iconic designs of its era. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E. NEW Press Information Coburg, December 10th, 2010 NEW 2 The legend returns. The NEW STRATOS will be officially presented on 29./30.11.2010, at the Paul Ricard Circuit in Le Castellet. The legendary Lancia Stratos HF was without a doubt the most spectacular and successful rally car of the 70s. With its thrilling lines and uncompro- mising design tailored to rally use, the Stratos not only single-handedly rewrote the history of rallying, it won a permanent place in the hearts of its countless fans with its dramatic performance on the world’s asphalt and gravel tracks – a performance which included three successive world championship titles. For Michael Stoschek, a collector and driver of historic racing cars, as well as a successful entrepreneur in the automotive supply industry, the development and construction of a modern version of the Stratos represents the fulfillment of a long-held dream. Back in 2003, the dream had already begun to take on a concrete form; now, at last, it has become a reality: In November 2010, forty years after the Stratos’ presentation at the Turin Motor Show, the New Stratos will be publicly presented for the first time at the Paul Ricard Circuit. The legend returns. NEW 3 A retrospective. It all began in 1970, at the Turin exhibition stand of the automobile designer, Bertone. The extreme Stratos study on display there – a stylistic masterpiece by the designer Marcello Gandini – didn’t just excite visitors, but caught the attention of Cesare Fiorio, Lancia’s team manager at the time… and refused to let go.

  • High Fidelity

LUISS TEACHING CASES Brand Development through Brand Extension and Licensing: Pininfarina Extra Marco Francesco Mazzù Luiss Guido Carli In collaboration with Pininfarina Management TEACHING CASES 2020 ISBN 978-88-6105-533-9 Introduction Year 2012 started as a key defining moment for Pininfarina Group and its future. In the eyes of the management team, the last five years have been full of hitches. A lot of personal energies have been dedicated to guide the organization through a set of diverse and serious challenges: years between 2007 and 2011 were characterized by the Global crisis of the Automotive sector, main historical focus of the group; some investments in partnership with major OEM did not reach the expected pay-off; the group has been forced to rethink its historical focus of activities, and, even more important, the dramatic death of Andrea in 2008, CEO of the Group at that time, forced an unexpected and unplanned change in leadership an internal governance, including the entrance of the first external members to Pininfarina’s family in top management position. Despite con- tinuing to succeed with its image in the market, as testified by winning several international “best designer” awards1, a strong bank intervention has been needed to guarantee company con- tinuity, and sales were not coping up with the expected level to support future growth. In addition, some of the core activities have been divested. It has been clear to the management, that the historical company focus, and the Automotive mar- ket was not anymore enough to support a healthy outlook. Something more should also be done to develop other “internal jewels” of the company as Pininfarina Extra (PFE), founded in 1986, and focused on bringing the company’s design culture and comprehension of modern life, culture and social paradigms to other categories of industrial design.

  • Timeless Performance
TIMELESS PERFORMANCE POWER IS NOTHING WITHOUT CONTROL www.pirelli.com FOR PIRELLI, INNOVATION IS A TRADITION Backed by a highly-successful sporting tradition, Pirelli now breathes new life into the illustrious rally cars of the time with the P7™ CORSA Classic range. Rather than a new version, it is an innovative reinterpretation of the “competition king”. P7™ CORSA Classic combines the Pirelli elements that make the difference: third-millennium technical specifications for structure and special tread pattern, in order to enjoy maximum performance in complete safety, but also the appearance of the sidewall that matches the vehicles for which it is designed, thus helping to maintain the original look, right down to the smallest details. As part of the design, Pirelli engineers utilised the parameters of prototypes of the time, maintaining the stiffness characteristics specified for the special suspensions that only those rally cars used when racing. Nevertheless, P7™ CORSA Classic is the fruit of current times: it utilises green, highly aromatic oil Tour de Corse 1984 - LANCIA RALLY 037 free (HAOF) compounds and complies with the very latest regulations governing noise levels. A perfect “high-performance” integration of past and present. Midway through the 70s, Pirelli revolutionised the story of road sports and rally car tyres with P7™, a concentrated mix of technological innovation: a tubeless, ultra-low-profile radial tyre having 0° nylon belt. The doubled contact patch area, structural stability at high speeds and possibility of fitting rims with larger diameter (ideal for larger, more powerful brakes and more practical suspension housing) have accompanied and assisted the development of increasingly sophisticated, safe and high-performance vehicles.
