Together with fast growing of the technologies, other aspects that cover the norms, cultures and lifestyle are developed as well. In the arts field, it has been a must to create certain techniques and creativity to develop together, e.g. the development of ideas and styles that changed from old to new. Mak Yong, as one of the local Malay traditional arts is often being in the centre of attentions, where the activities of cultural encouragements towards its performance are also developed, where originally it was well known only in Kelantan. Beyond times until today, it became a globally famous subject of art that it is recognized by the UNESCO as the “World’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, which indirectly made the arts from Kelantan an important cultural arts for the whole Malaysian society. As Mak Yong has developed in its history, so did the structure of performance and other elements in the classical arts, including the costumes used.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Interpreting and Treating Autism in Javanese Indonesia A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Anne Currier Tucker 2013 © Copyright by Anne Currier Tucker 2013! ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Interpreting and Treating Autism in Javanese Indonesia by Anne Currier Tucker Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2013 Professor Irma Dosamantes-Beaudry and Professor Michael Owen Jones, Co-chairs Autism is a complex developmental disorder affecting communication, social interaction, and behavior. As interest in this disorder has increased worldwide, clinical and social science researchers have begun to ponder how autism might be configured and understood in different parts of the world. There may be as many as one million people with autism in Indonesia, yet little information is available regarding the implications for affected individuals, families, and communities. My dissertation takes a sociocultural perspective in addressing how autism is recognized, interpreted, and responded to in Javanese Indonesia. Based on 12 months of multi- sited ethnographic fieldwork in Yogykarta and Jakarta, I have a) documented how autism is being introduced to and taken up by Javanese families, b) addressed the benefits and challenges of using autism as an interpretive framework for developmental difference, and c) considered the reactions to and implications for some of the interventions that have been attempted thus far. ii In doing so I make a number of key observations and claims. First, Javanese reactions to individuals with autism are deeply influenced by local models of personhood and sociality as well as socio-economic status.

Schuyler, Chair Ter Ellingson Laurie J. Sears Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Music © 2013 Philip Bradford Yampolsky University of Washington Abstract Music and media in the Dutch East Indies: Gramophone records and radio in the late colonial era, 1903-1942 Philip Bradford Yampolsky Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Emeritus Philip D. Schuyler Music This dissertation is intended as an ethnomusicological contribution to the history of music and media in Indonesia. It deals with topics and resources that have never been systematically examined for this region: gramophone records and radio broadcasting from the years before World War II, the last years of Dutch colonial control. The gramophone records are our only documentation of the sound of Indonesian music in the years before World War II. This dissertation tries to identify (and to some extent provide) the information one needs in order to understand the records and, by extension, stylistic trends during the pre-war period.
