Lertpusit / GMSARN International Journal 8 (2014) 109 - 116 Socio-Economic Impact and the Adaptation of Boten People under Chinese Transnationality Sivarin Lertpusit Abstract — This research paper is about Socio-Economic Impact and the Adaptation of Boten people under Chinese Transnational influences. Its aims are 1. To find out the transnational issues and the influences of Chinese capital in Laos: Boten 2. To study the socio-economic impact on Boten people. This paper uses qualitative research methodology by gathering information from documents and field research. Analyzed the information with Transnational Enclosure theory, Territorialization and Periphery framework. The research finds out that the transnational enclosure and territorialization were acting and processing parallel at the same time. Chinese capital power spread its influences on economics and politics in Laos which is the strategic country that China can connect itself to South East Asia. China focuses on its national interest in Laos, especially in logistic strategy as the main route for Chinese products. Its influences slowly enclosed Laos local people’s authority on their own spaces. Meanwhile, to reach its development goal, Laos’ government did not act against these Chinese investments, instead, the government set up regulations to support and facilitate Chinese capital. Reteritorialization is an example. Laos government defined Boten district as a worthy connecting location between Laos and China. Thus, it specified Boten district to be a Special Economic Zone which would be managed by Chinese developers. With this development plan, Lao government expanded its power over Boten community. Luangnamta province sent a number of officials to deal with Boten people. -

The studied population was the Tai Lue people in Thailand, Burma, China, and Laos. The specific sample was studied, namely, folk philosophers, monks, Pu Ja drum scholars, and community leaders. The instruments used in the study were the observation forms and interview forms. The data was analyzed with the content analysis method. The research results revealed that the Pu Ja drum was still an important musical instrument in the ritual and the Buddhist beliefs of the Tai Lue ethnic group in Lanna strongly. The cultural methods and inheritance of the important identity of the Tai Lue ethnic group could maintain the Buddhism in the Lanna society. Although there are several changes when the time passes by, Pu Ja drum is still a part of life in the Tai Lue ethnic group which is part of the Mekong ethnic group that cannot be separated easily until the present. April 1 – Buddhism – Scripture verse for the day: 1 Corinthians 10:14 The Tai Lue are Hinayana Buddhists (as opposed to China's majority Mahayana Buddhists). Buddhism runs strong in most villages, especially among the older generations. The heart of Buddhism is a life of good works done on earth that will ensure a better life in the life after death. Good deeds wipe away bad deeds, sacrifices appease the gods and can even bring good luck. Pray that Buddhism would be seen for what it is: an empty religion that cannot truly wipe away their bad deeds. Pray that they would understand how Jesus is the true savior who can wipe away their sins. April 2 - Idols – Psalm 115:2-9 This Psalm sums it up well. The idols here are just made by the hands of men. They are not the true, living God. Pray that the Tai Lue might come to know the True and Living God. Pray that they would destroy their idols and not be bound to them. April 3 - Monks – I Corinthians 3:19 Most boys become monks for a least a short period of time, to make merit for their family, to understand the scriptures of the Tai Lue, and hopefully gain enlightenment. Monks have great respect and authority. They also understand the Tai Lue culture and have great influence in community decision making. Pray that God would choose some monks for himself, and that they would in turn lead others in their communities to know God. Thank God for those he already has chosen to follow Him! The purposes of this study were 1) to create inheritance and development process of Tai Lue singing participation 2) to create Tai Lue singing innovation. Moreover, the engagement focuses in building innovation and innovators of Tai Lue singing by the singers that can utilize knowledge to create Tai Lue singing by driving in producing more community innovators to use these processes to develop the further performance. The study was found that 1) the process in creating innovation of Tai Lue singing was that all singers could conduct the participation cooperatively, 2) the innovation of two songs of Tai Lue were including Pleng Aew Muang Phayao Muan Jai (Travelling in Phayao Happily Song) and Pleng Tam Nan Sueb San Tai Lue (Inheriting Tai Lue Legend Song). However, the traditional songs of Tai Lue singing were recorded namely Khab Pa, Khab Bao Tor Sao which are about flirting between men and women.
