  • SLOVO Honeyland
SLOVO Film review Honeyland Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov, 2018 Screenwriters: Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov Place: North Macedonia Studios: Trice Films, Apolo Media Length: 87 minutes Language: Balkan Gagauz Turkish Alex Figurski, University College London. Honeyland is a film from the countryside gone global. Set in the rural Balkans, a woman tending to wild bees has her way of life disrupted by rowdy new neighbours, bringing with them the demands of modernity and need for greater yields. And so this uniquely North Macedonian documentary – featuring a variety of cultural references and showcasing the country’s glorious stone-washed landscapes – carries an ecological message of worldwide relevance: Is our consumerism destroying the planet? The protagonist is Hatidže Muratova, a lone beekeeper in the near-abandoned village of Bekirlija. She is completely at one with her surroundings. She hikes up and down steep mountains, facing wild bees with minimal protective gear. She harvests the honey using wisdom passed on by previous generations and keeps her hive well-fed: “half for them, half for me”. Every so often, she travels to Skopje, the capital, to sell her produce directly to the market stall vendors, bringing back bananas and chestnut-coloured hair dye. Her quiet life is disturbed when a large family moves in next door, with the intention of earning extra income by producing their own honey. However, without Hatidže’s local knowledge and driven by consumer demand for ever increasing quantities of honey, they pay little attention to the damage they are doing to the beehive and the environment around them. Contrasting the lives of Hatidže and the family next door, Honeyland is a film about a traditional way of life which we may feel we can never go back to and, on the other hand, a mass consumption culture which cannot be sustainable for long.

  • Mutual Intelligibility Among the Turkic Languages
Mutual Intelligibility Among the Turkic Languages By Robert Lindsay Abstract: The Turkic family of languages with all important related dialects was analyzed on the basis of mutual intelligibility: (1) To determine the extent to which various Turkic lects can understand each other. (2) To ascertain whether various Turkic lects are better characterized as full languages in the own in need of ISO codes from SIL or rather as dialects of another language. (3) To analyze the history of various Turkic lects in an attempt to write a proper history of the important lects. (4) To attempt to categorize the Turkic languages in terms of subfamilies, sub-sub families, etc. The results were: (1) Rough intelligibility figures for various Turkic lects, related lects and Turkish itself were determined. Surprisingly, it was not difficult to arrive at these rough estimates. (2) The Turkic family was expanded from Ethnologue's 41 languages to 53 languages. Splitting: a number of new languages were created from existing dialects, as these dialects were better characterized as full languages than as dialects of another tongue. Lumping: a few existing languages were eliminated and re-analyzed as dialects of another or newly created language. (3) Full and detailed histories for many Turkic lects were written up in a coherent, easy to understand way, a task sorely needed in Turkic as histories of Turkic lects are often confused, inaccurate, controversial, and incomplete. (4) A new attempt was made at categorizing the Turkic family that rejects and rewrites some of the better-known characterizations. Acknowledgments: This paper could not be written without the generous support and kind, wise heart of Professor Suer Eker of Bashkent University in Ankara, who is in charge of the book project where this article is published.

  • Christians in Eastern Europe
A Preliminary Analysis of the Central and Eastern Europe GCPN Region This report is a preliminary analysis of Central and Eastern Europe, prepared for the Global Church Planting Network (GCPN) in conjunction with OC International. The purpose of GCPN is to connect people and resources to accelerate church planting among all the peoples, languages, nations, cities, and villages of the world, with the expectation of communities being transformed to the Glory of God. (More about GCPN can be found at www.GCPN.info.) As we began to contemplate what the next steps toward this end might be, those that suit the present context of Central and Eastern Europe, it quickly became clear that a deeper understanding of the region was necessary. So first, we set out to analyze the existing information about the Harvest Force and Harvest Field. Hence this report, which draws heavily upon the information published by Operation World and the Joshua Project, strives to describe some of the religious, ethnic and linguistic realities found in Central and Eastern Europe that disciple making movements must grapple with. A two page executive summary follows as well as sixteen pages of supporting maps, tables and graphs. Also we saw that it would be important to identify the key Christian leaders in the region, those coordinating prayer networks, church planting efforts, research and mission mobilization for each country in the region. This “snapshot,” it was hoped, would give us a better understanding of what was already happening. To gather this information, a survey was sent to approximately 160 leaders in Central and Eastern Europe in November 2012.

  • Last Voices/Son Sesler Robert Lindsay MA, California State
Last Voices/Son Sesler Robert Lindsay MA, California State University, Fresno Mutual Intelligibility among the Turkic Languages Turkic is a large family of about 40 languages stretching from Turkey all the way to China. Most of the languages are pretty close, and it's often been said that they are all mutually intelligible, and that you can go from Turkey all the way to the Yakut region of Siberia and be understood the whole way. This is certainly not the case, although there is something to it. That is because the languages, while generally not above 90% intelligible which is the requirement to be dialects, do have varying degrees of intelligibility. That is, there is some intelligibility between most of the Turkic languages, but generally below 90%. The truth is that the mutual intelligibility in Turkic is much less than proclaimed. Turkish and Azeri are often said to be completely intelligible, but this is not true, though the situation is interesting. The two are not intelligible, but there are intelligible dialects between them. The far eastern dialects of Turkish are closer to Azeri than to Turkish. Turkish has about 65-90% intelligibility with Azeri. After a few weeks of close contact, they can often communicate pretty well. Azeri is spoken in Azerbaijan. This situation is changing now due to increased contact. However, nowadays due to exposure to Turkish TV, most Azeri speakers can speak Turkish well, and due to exposure to Azeri TV, Turks understand a lot more Azeri than they used to. Kazakh and Kirghiz are also close, with probably 75-80% intelligibility between them.
