ančovič JANČOVIČ, Ivan. On the issue of narrativity and reference in historiography and fiction. Historický časopis, 2010, 58, 4, pp. 621-632, Bratislava. The author of the study pays attention to narrativity – which has been considered very crucial in recent decades in creating presentation of past events. Narration is a basic act in works of historians as well as prose writers. The author deals with some common aspects of narration in texts by historians and fiction writers. Historical text and fictional text are created by structural building of narration, where selection and hierarchization of facts is made, selected narration elements are put in a compact interpretation giving particular events sense and meaning. A certain aim of an author of narration cannot be excluded and procedures in the building of narrative structure are similar in both cases, but specific procedures, aimed at results not acceptable in a scientific text, are applied in fictional text. Next the author examines the main differences resulting from different characters of reference of both text fields and from their different position in a net of social discourses. The crucial difference originates in the ontological nature of facts in- cluded in a historian’s narration compared to the “facts” given by fiction. This is connected to differences in the references of the two types of text. The next differentiation aspect is represented by the aims followed in creating historical and fictional narration. These aims are influenced by our cultural frame. The texts of a historian and a fiction writer are produced and perceived in diverse „recep- tive regimes“; the two kinds of text enter different levels of expectation and fulfil diverse functions. Narration. Text of a historian. Non-fiction. Fact. Reference. Naratívna forma, dlhodobo spájaná predovšetkým s oblasťou umeleckej literatúry a v súvislosti 1 ČERNíK, Václav. Formovanie teórie spoločenského faktu. In Filozofia, 2009, roč. Na druhej strane nemožno prehliadnuť ani odlišujúce aspekty vyplývajúce z rozdielnosti štatútov oboch oblastí (veda – umenie) premietnutej do odlišných režimov fungovania v sieti spoločen- ských diskurzov. Vhodným východiskom naznačeného zámeru je evidencia zásadného rozdielu onto- logickej podstaty faktov, o ktorých vypovedá narácia historika, a „faktov“ sprostredkova- ných umeleckou naráciou. Pre pozorovateľa, ktorý filozofickú problematiku sleduje len ako hosť zo sektora literárnej vedy, je sympatická „stredná cesta“, ktorú obaja spomenutí autori pri analýze spoločenského faktu vytyčujú medzi krajnými pozíciami naivného re- alizmu a extrémneho konštruktivizmu,

Campbell Abstract: Scholars have debated Pope Pius XII’s role in the Holocaust since the 1960s. Did he do everything he could and should have done to save Jews? His critics say no because of antisemitism rooted in the traditional Catholic views. His defenders say yes and deny that he was an antisemite. In my thesis, I shall assess the arguments on both sides in terms of the available evidence. I shall focus both on what Pius XII did do and what he did not do and on the degree to which he can be held responsible for the actions of low-level clergy.

  • The Case of General Ante Moškov 1945-1947 Or General Ante Moškov and the So Called Ustashi Gold 1945-19471
UDK: 355-05 Moškov, A.“1945/1947” Received: September 4, 2017 Accepted: October 24, 2017 Izvorni znanstveni članak The Case of General Ante MOškov 1945-1947 or General ANTE MOškov AND THE SO CALLED Ustashi Gold 1945-19471 Ante DELIĆ* Similarly to many other former Independent State of Croatia [NDH]2 officials, after retreating to Austria, General Ante Moškov was not a mere passive observer of future developments but rather directed his activity, under the newly created circumstances, against the recently established Yugoslav Communist regime. Also, Moškov was the first among the former high NDH officials, who, after the war, publicly took an oppositional stand towards his quite recent leader, Poglavnik Ante Pavelić. In doing so, he was not motivated by any principled political reasons, but rather by the discord around the evaluation of Pavelić’s role, primarily from the viewpoint of the crash he had experienced. Closely connected to Moškov is also the issue of the so called Ustashi gold, taken out of Croatia during the retreat, which really marked the most his post-1945 activities. This period of his second emigration is the subject of the present paper. Based on the available bibliography, as well as the available both domestic and foreign archival sources – some of which have so far been unknown and as such have never been used – the present paper tries to additionally enlighten some unknown and controversial episodes from Moškov’s postwar activities. Key Words: Ante Moškov, Ante Pavelić, the so called Ustashi gold, the Vatican, Krunoslav Draganović, Western allies * Ante Delić, Ph. D., Department of Teachers and Preschool Teachers Education of the Univer- sity of Zadar, Zadar, Croatia 1 The present article constitutes a considerably expanded talk from the 5th Congress of Croa- tian Historians: Crises, Conflicts, and Solidarity in the Historical Perspective, Zadar, October 5-8, 2016.

  • La Rat Lines
MARK AARONS E JOHN LOFTUS LA RAT LINES Papa Benedetto XVI 1 “I NEMICI DEI MIEI NEMICI SONO MIEI AMICI” CHIESA CATTOLICA E RATLINE di Lawrence M.F.

These varying interpretations are related to the circumstances of the dispatch of the memorandum, its text, the actions of prominent representatives of the Ustasha government, relations between the new Yugoslav authorities and Western allies, especially the British and the role of Archbishop Stepinac and the Holy See in the ISC. In order to understand the memorandum, it is necessary to consider the most important political and military circumstances at the end of World War II in Yugoslavia, especially the politics of the new Yugoslavia and the Western powers, primarily the British. The representatives of the Holy See in the ISC and the Archbishop of Zagreb, Alojzije Stepinac, played an important role in efforts to preserve the Ustasha state. This paper was written based on unpublished and published archival sources and relevant historiographical literature. Keywords: World War II, Yugoslavia, the Ustasha government, memorandum, Western Allies, Archbishop Stepinac, Holy See.

Beteiligung. Unrecht. Frauen und die Ustaša-Bewegung“ (Uključenost. Sudjelovanje. Nepravda. Žene i ustaški pokret) posvetit će se ideološkim mišljenjima i mogućnosti djelovanja žena ak- tivnih u fašističkom pokretu, od „prvoborkinja“ ustaškog pokreta do ženskog personala u koncentracijskom logoru Jasenovac. BARTULIN’S TILTING AT WINDMILLS: MANIPULATION AS A HISTORIOGRAPHIC METHOD (A reply to Nevenko Bartulin’s “Intelectual Discourse on Race and Culture in Croatia 1900-1945”) Tomislav JONJIĆ∗ In this article, which is written in a polemical tone, the author is making an eff ort to problematize a point of view from which the ideology of Croatian nationalism, the Ustasha movement and the Independent State of Croatia are even today being obsereved by a part of historiography. According to the au- thor, the ideology of Croatian nationalism has not suff ered much vital modi- fi cation since the mid-19th century until the end od the Second World War, rather it has kept itself occupied with justifying the right of Croats as a multi- confessional European nation to establish an independent state. Not just po- litical manifestations, but also literary and cultural achievements of the na- tionalist ideology protagonists clearly speak in that direction. Th e geopolitical position of Croatian lands, as well as the infl uence of foreign powers have not made the achievement of such a right of Croatian people and the evolution of Croatian nationalist ideology possible. As a result, that same nationalist ideol- ogy sometimes takes on foreign ideological and political infl uences which are visible only on its surface and purely out of tactial reasons. Th e Ustasha move- ment, being one of the manifestations of Croatian nationalism, is also charac- terized by ideological eclecticism. Th us, diff erent and sometimes contrastive statements made by the leading persona of Ustasha movement regarding their attitude towards the ideologies dominating Europe in the time aft er the First World War are therefore understandable.
