identity Conclusion eferences 2 The Crescent area ● Situated on the Northern Fringe of the Massif Central (France) ● Has a form of a half moon (a ‘crescent’) ● The local gallo-romance dialects simultaneously display typical features of: – Oïl varieties (French, Poitevin-Saintongeais, Berrichon...) – Oc varieties (Limousin in the west and Auvergnat in the east) ● Crescent dialects are often called – ‘Marchois’ (~ ‘Marchese’) on the Limousin side – ‘Bourbonnais’ on the Auvergnat side 3 The Crescent area 4 The Crescent area 5 The Crescent area ● Latest studies in linguistics tend to show that they are Oc with an Oïl significant influence (Quint 1996, 1998 ; Guérin 2017) – Oc features: fundamental lexicon, morphology – Oïl features: modern lexicon, phonology, syntax ● Crescent area = dialect continuum – Variation is very great (especially on a north-south axis) – More than 20km → intercomprehension may be difficult 6 Plan The Crescent area Linguistic history of the Crescent bilingual since the 19th Century ● Poor land → agriculture was difficult – Men had to go into exile (in Paris, Lyon) ↳ worked as stonemason (famous Stonemasons of Creuse) – expanded French into the rural population ● Local dialects remained the vernacular langage until the middle of the 20th century 8 Linguistic history of the Crescent ● After WW2, “process of disappearing” = breaking the line of generational transmission ● Causes of this process: – Language policy in France, with regard to regional or minority languages – The role of the public school in how speakers consider their native language (ban, punishment) – Industrialisation and “modernisation” have injured the traditional social structure – An important acceleration of the rural exodus, which depopulated the region – The eferences 10 Current sociolinguistic situation ● Typology of speakers: > 70 yr. = native and fluent speakers 40-70 yr. = terminal speakers (some passive knowledge and very limited productive skills) < situation Awareness among speakers The issue of identity Conclusion eferences 14 Awareness among speakers ● Speakers are welcoming with great enthusiasm initiatives for their dialects – as those of the project “The Linguistic Crescent” (Quint & Guérin 2017) ● Local initiatives – Isolated local initiatives (texts, lexicons...) – Local groups working on a lexicon (Luchapt, Châteauponsac) – Language course (Saint-Agnant-de-Versillat) – Sketches and songs (Parsac) 15 Awareness among speakers ● Meetings bringing together speakers from all Crescent area, every year in Creuse – Fursac, Parsac, La Celle-Dunoise, Crozant, La Souterraine… ● Despite a growing public enthusiasm, these initiatives have little broad impact will not be able to stop the progressive process of disappearing 16 speakers call their local dialect “patois” – to identify them, they add the name of the town (ex. the patois of Dompierre) ● Several speakers describe their dialect as a “skinned patois” [patois écorché] i.e. a sub-patois ● In this conception: – French is the “legitimate” language – Limousin Occitan is the “legitimate” patois – Local dialect is in a situation of inferiority: skinned patois 18 The issue of identity ● Speakers have no clear linguistic or cultural identity, beyond the town – clear sense of belonging to town or village – lot of local words to express these belongings ● They consider themselves as French or Limousin – but rarely claimed or emphasised ● Crescent is a continuum – because of important variation, no linguistic community recognised by speakers 19 The issue of identity ● Crescent dialects = Occitan-based & in Occitan area – no Occitan identity – sometimes, negative feelings, especially concerning the Occitan traditional spelling ● West speakers know that their territory is composed of part of the former County of La Marche – awareness in the 1960-1970s → development of tourism – no Marchese identity historically present in this region 20 Plan The languages – or other minority languages – is part of a broader process of disappearance of langages (Crystal 2000 ; Austin & Sallabank 2011) ● Disappearance of Crescent languages, nowadays almost ineluctable – is due to several factors which have changed the local culture (Crystal 2000) ● Study of the issue of identity of local people – better understand the current situation of these dialects Once the language of a small town on the Tiber River in Latium, Latin was carried far afield with the expan- sion of Roman power. The Empire reached its greatest extent under the reign of the emperor Trajan (98–117 CE), at which point it included modern-day Britain, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, and the Balkan peninsula, as well as immense territories in the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond, mak- ing it by far the largest single state the Western world had ever known. Even those distances are dwarfed by the extent of Western European colonial expan- sion in the 1500s and 1600s, which brought Spanish to most of Latin America and the Caribbean, Portuguese to Brazil, French to Canada, and all three to their many outposts around the world, where they engendered some robust cre- oles. On the time dimension, the colloquial speech that underlies the Romance languages was already a constant presence during the seven centuries that saw Rome grow from village to empire – and then their history still has twenty cen- turies to go. Their uses in society extend to every level and facet of activity from treasured world literature to instant messaging. A truly panoramic account of Romance linguistic history would find few readers and probably no writers. The scope has to be limited somehow.

    About Fanjeaux, France Perched on the crest of a hill in Southwestern France, Fanjeaux is a peaceful agricultural community that traces its origins back to the Romans. According to local legend, a Roman temple to Jupiter was located where the parish church now stands. Thus the name of the town proudly reflects its Roman heritage– Fanum (temple) Jovis (Jupiter). It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town with only 900 inhabitants was a busy commercial and social center of 3,000 people during the time of Saint Dominic. When he arrived on foot with the Bishop of Osma in 1206, Fanjeaux’s narrow streets must have been filled with peddlers, pilgrims, farmers and even soldiers. The women would gather to wash their clothes on the stones at the edge of a spring where a washing place still stands today. The church we see today had not yet been built. According to the inscription on a stone on the south facing outer wall, the church was constructed between 1278 and 1281, after Saint Dominic’s death. You should take a walk to see the church after dark when its octagonal bell tower and stone spire, crowned with an orb, are illuminated by warm orange lights. This thick-walled, rectangular stone church is an example of the local Romanesque style and has an early Gothic front portal or door (the rounded Romanesque arch is slightly pointed at the top). The interior of the church was modernized in the 18th century and is Baroque in style, but the church still houses unusual reliquaries and statues from the 13th through 16th centuries.

This study examines this preverbal particle system from a diachronic and synchronic perspective to shed light on issues of language contact, change, endangerment, and maintenance. The diachronic source of this system has important implications regarding its current and future status. My research indicates that this system is an ancient feature of the language, deriving from contact between the original inhabitants of Gascony, who spoke Basque or an ancestral form of the language, and the Romans who conquered the region in 56 B.C.

In the past, it was the language of the state and literature. However, Occitan dialects have been in a slow decline, beginning with the Ordinance of Villers-Coterêts in 1539 which banned the use of Occitan in state affairs. While this did little to affect the daily life and usage of Occitan, it established a precedent that is still referred to in modern arguments about the use of regional languages (Costa, 2). In the beginning of the 21st century, the position of Occitan dialects in Midi is precarious. This thesis will investigate the current use of Occitan dialects in and around Montpellier, France, particularly which dialects are most commonly used in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon (where Montpellier is located), the environment in which they are learned, the methods of transmission, and the general attitude towards Occitan. It will also discuss Occitan’s current use in literature, music, and politics. While the primary geographic focus of this thesis will be on Montpellier and its surroundings, it should somewhat applicable to the whole of Occitan speaking France.

The overlying aim of the ethnographic research will be to see whether blackness can be used as a unifier to those belonging to enslaved and indentured diasporas. Comparisons will be made between the two race models of the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean worlds. A substantial portion will be set aside for a critique of the concept of Coolitude including commentary on V.S. Naipaul.     NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Patois and Petticoats Two words have a prominent position in the New Orleans lexicon, but Patios and Patois should never be confused. Patios are everywhere throughout the Crescent City, especially in the French Quarter. Often paved or bricked, these roofless inner courtyards are lushly landscaped and are ideal for entertaining. The word patio apparently comes from an Old Spanish word for pasture or from the Latin pactum, meaning agreement. This was perhaps because legal agreements were decided in open courtyards, or patios. The Patio Planners, a Vieux Carré garden club, delights in their patios and hosts the Christmas caroling in Jackson Square each holiday season. Then there are patios that don’t exactly fit the above definition, such as F & M Patio on Tchoupitoulas. There is a bit of green open space available, but only if one is dancing on the pool table (a tradition there). Once one starts acting like the locals, it isn’t long before one is speaking in the vernacular. That’s where patois comes in. Patois is a form of language considered nonstandard which can refer to dialects, pidgins, creoles and other forms of native or local speech. But it is not usually deemed to be slang or jargon (occupational slang). Class distinctions come into play because the patois, not used in literature or public speaking, is a provincial form of speech. That is unless one is a Mardi Gras Indian, where many phrases of Créole patois have entered the vocabulary (especially in song).

Siegel The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus E-mail: [email protected] Abstract While lexicography in the Hispanophone Caribbean has flourished, and to a lesser extent in the territories of the Caribbean whose official language is English, dictionaries of the French-official Caribbean (except Haiti) have been quite limited. But for the rest of the French-official Caribbean, there remains much work to do. In this paper, I assess the state of lexicography in the French-official Caribbean, as well as the possibilities for fu- ture work. There are six principal areas of lexicographic documentation to be developed. The first, most urgent task is the documentation of the endangered St Barth French. The next priority is multilingual lexicography for the Caribbean region. The third priority is multilingual lexicography of French Guiana, home to endangered Amerindian, Creole and immigrant languages. Fourth, there is a largely pristine area of lexicographic work for the English varieties of the French Caribbean. The fifth area of work to be developed is monolingual lexicog- raphy of French-based Creoles. Lastly, there is exploratory work to be done on the signed language varieties of the French-official Caribbean. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role that the Richard and Jeannette Allsopp Centre for Caribbean Lexicography can play in the development of these areas. For an amazing “volcanic trip” to the heart of France, one must visit and tour the magnificent departments of Cantal and Puy de Dôme. These departments host what it was the largest volcano in Europe and the famous Chaîne des Puys, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The word “puy” (UK : 'pwi) comes from the Latin podium, and means “height” or “hill” (Godard, 2013). Both the Cantal volcano and the Chaîne des Puys are located in the French Central Massif. Without even mentioning the geology (in general), or the volcanoes (in particular), the Auvergne region is internationally recognized for many reasons, its landscapes with impressive peaks, valleys, ravines, forests, lakes, dormant volcanoes (although as in the Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: you never know ...) and so on, its remarkable religious (Romanesque and Gothic) and military architectural heritage (countless castles and fortresses), and also, why not, for its gastronomy (after all is France, isnt’it?).
