Stereotypes and Economic Conditions of Poor Whites in the U.S. "White trash" is, in many ways, the white Other. When we think about race in the U.S., oftentimes we find ourselves constrained by cat- egories we've inherited from a kind of essentialist multiculturalism, or what we call "vulgar multiculturalism."^ Vulgar multiculturalism holds that racial and ethic groups are "authentically" and essentially differ- ent from each other, and that racism is a one-way street: it proceeds out of whiteness to subjugate non-whiteness, so that all racists are white and all victims of racism are non-white. Critical multiculturalism, as it has been articulated by theorists such as those in the Chicago Cultural Studies Group, is one example of a multiculturalism which tries to com- plicate and trouble the dogmatic ways vulgar multiculturalism has un- derstood race, gender, and class identities. "White trash" identity is one we believe a critical multiculturalism should address in order to further its project of re-examining the relationships between identity and social power. Unlike the "whiteness" of vulgar multiculturalism, the whiteness of "white trash" signals something other than privilege and social power. -

It is the second paper in a series of thoughts collected, organized, and promoted by the Quality in Education Think Tank (QiETT) of the International Academy for Quality (IAQ). The first paper addressed a broader scope of topics and put into perspective the overall field of “Quality in Education”, which set a common ground for further reflection and guidance of QiETT activities. The forthcoming papers, such as this one, focus around more specific subjects and delve deeper into particular topics based upon the collection of international inputs from quality and education experts. The collected thoughts compiled in this paper are presented in the following pages, according to headings that correspond to clusters of contributions received from the authors. Each author has a different background and is from distinct continents, but all share in common, as core QiETT members, a passion to promote Quality in Education. To date, the collection of white papers comprises the following titles: “Quality in Education: Perspectives from the QiETT of IAQ” “Large Scale Training of Quality Professionals” “Inclusive Quality of Education” ABSTRACT Human capital quality is recognized and widely accepted as one of the key drivers for successful organizations and territories. That being the case, one can thus easily understand why “Quality Education” has been recognized by the United Nations (UN) as one of the 17 goals needed to transform our world, under the aimed Sustainable Development paradigm. -

This study examines this preverbal particle system from a diachronic and synchronic perspective to shed light on issues of language contact, change, endangerment, and maintenance. The diachronic source of this system has important implications regarding its current and future status. My research indicates that this system is an ancient feature of the language, deriving from contact between the original inhabitants of Gascony, who spoke Basque or an ancestral form of the language, and the Romans who conquered the region in 56 B.C. -

Muslim Women in the UK and Bosnia: Religious Identities in Contrasting Contexts Sanja Bilic PhD The University of York Centre for Women’s Studies September, 2013 Abstract This thesis explores Muslim women’s religious identities and the processes through which they construct and narrate these identities by comparing Bosnian and UK Muslim women. Disproportionate political and media attention on Muslim women in Europe has in turn prompted an increase in academic interest. However, most academic research neglects the experiences of the indigenous European Muslim women thereby maintaining the image of the foreign ‘other’. This research forges a more inclusive approach by considering the views of indigenous European Muslim women. The study is based on interviews with 20 Muslim women, four focus groups and observation of the activities of three Muslim women’s organisations. I subscribe to a feminist perspective where participants’ voices are privileged and, since I belong to both communities, the complexities of my positionality were constantly reflected upon during the course of the research. My analysis is organised around three main themes that emerged from my participants’ accounts of religious identity: family life, hijab and women’s organisations. Family was identified as an important factor in these women’s early perceptions of Islam. However, violent events – the war in Bosnia and the effects of 9/11 and 7/7 in the UK – affected women’s reflections on what it means to be a Muslim woman in Europe, initiating independent re-evaluation of religious identity. This process was transformative, often resulting in a decision to wear the hijab and/or to seek out spaces that encourage a positive sense of Muslim identity such as women’s organisations. -

In the past, it was the language of the state and literature. However, Occitan dialects have been in a slow decline, beginning with the Ordinance of Villers-Coterêts in 1539 which banned the use of Occitan in state affairs. While this did little to affect the daily life and usage of Occitan, it established a precedent that is still referred to in modern arguments about the use of regional languages (Costa, 2). In the beginning of the 21st century, the position of Occitan dialects in Midi is precarious. This thesis will investigate the current use of Occitan dialects in and around Montpellier, France, particularly which dialects are most commonly used in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon (where Montpellier is located), the environment in which they are learned, the methods of transmission, and the general attitude towards Occitan. It will also discuss Occitan’s current use in literature, music, and politics. While the primary geographic focus of this thesis will be on Montpellier and its surroundings, it should somewhat applicable to the whole of Occitan speaking France. -

1 Heritage Languages Among South Asian Americans Bryn Mawr College Spring 2014 Karuna Doraiswamy Abstract* This thesis explores second generation South Asian Americans' relationships with their heritage languages; specifically, the ways in which these relationships might challenge current convention regarding the categorization of heritage and non-heritage learners along a linear spectrum. This thesis also examines the extent to which the decision to (re)leam one's heritage language might be considered a necessary step to earning cultural legitimacy in the diasporic community, a symbolic reclamation of one's history, or even a performative act intended to better match oneself to the dominant perception of what it means to be South Asian. 1 Introduction This section explains basic issues regarding heritage languages in general, including current definitional debates, research on childhood interaction with heritage languages, and the second generation's attitude toward their ancestral language and culture. 1.1 Defining heritage language learners English has long been the dominant language spoken in the United States, to the detriment of many indigenous and immigrant language communities.
