This proposal is written to encourage the Australian government to develop the new national curriculum so that it includes archaeological knowledge and methods for understanding the past. Integrating archaeology into a National History Curriculum provides an unprecedented opportunity to move Australia from a position where we are lagging behind developments in other nations, to one where we are amongst the world leaders on this issue. History curricula require students to become familiar with the methods of history, and archaeology is undoubtedly one of these. Archaeology is also the only historical research tool that extends its methodology across the entire continuum of Australian history. Archaeology does not rely only on the written word, but draws on a range of tangible objects and their context within a physical setting. Through archaeology, students will learn a scientific means for understanding the past, and develop deeper knowledge of the global firsts in human evolution and the unique accomplishments achieved by Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians who did not leave a written record. This submission consists of an overview document, and a number of cascading documents. Archaeology has very specific disciplinary tools that allow us to learn about the past, and it is important that we draw on these tools in any substantive study of the past. This proposal is written to encourage the Australian government to integrate archaeology into the new National History Curriculum. The Australian Archaeological Association is one of the largest archaeological organisations in Australia, representing a diverse membership of professionals, students and others with an interest in archaeology. It aims to promote the advancement of archaeology as a discipline; to provide an organisation for the discussion and dissemination of archaeological information and ideas; to promote the study and conservation of archaeological sites and collections; and, to publicise the work of the Association. We count amongst our members some of the foremost cultural heritage and archaeological experts in the world and we can draw on their expertise to offer assistance to help ensure that cultural heritage is managed in line with world's best practice. As reported by Nick Ewbank, President of the History Teachers Association of Australia, the aim was ‘to strengthen the teaching of Australian history in schools and to sketch the essential narrative for a model Australian history curriculum’. The Australian History Summit has successfully created the basis for a framework for this curriculum and highlighted the importance of strengthening the teaching of Australian history in schools. It is now time to establish a ‘body of historical knowledge which should be taught to all Australian students’. This proposal is written to encourage the Australian government to integrate an archaeological approach to the study of the past into the National History Curriculum. History curricula throughout Australia require students to become familiar with the methods of history, and archaeology is undoubtedly one of these. Through archaeology, students will learn scientific analytical skills that can be applied to a wide range of evidence about the past, develop literacy and numeracy skills, and explore the common elements in what it means to be human. Bridging the sciences and the humanities, and the distant and the recent past, archaeology is the ideal vehicle to explore our heritage, and understand the past of all Australians. For many thousands of years, Indigenous Australians were in the vanguard of scientific and technological developments of humankind. Despite a number of books written on this subject for a general audience (e.g. Blainey 1978; Flood 1989, 2006; Mulvaney and Kamminga 1999), the current teaching of Australian history has produced little public understanding of these key events in our long-term Smith, Burke, Davidson 2 Joint submission by WAC & AAA history. Moreover, an emphasis on the analysis of historical documents means that there is even less understanding of the ways that the past can be accessed through the scientific methods used by archaeologists. Archaeology is currently strongly associated with the ancient history syllabus and involves overseas examples of popular classical sites, such as Pompeii, leading many people to assume that Australia has no long term past. Moreover, these examples are often delivered in traditional classroom settings by teachers with limited knowledge of archaeology or access to suitable archaeological resources. The development of an Australian National History Curriculum provides a unique opportunity for us to redress these deficiencies. Archaeology is also the only historical research tool that extends its methodology across the entire continuum of Australian history. Archaeology does not rely only on the written word, but draws on a range of tangible objects and their context within a physical setting. Therefore, archaeology has the potential to provide students with an appreciation that the past involves far more than the written word and that more lateral approaches to research can significantly assist in an appreciation of where we as a nation have come from and how the cultural diversity

According to Alexa.com, the internet traffic ranking company, there are only six websites that internet users worldwide visit more often than Wikipedia: Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo!, Blogger.com, and Baidu.com (the leading Chinese language search engine). In the States, it ranks sixth behind Amazon.com. Over the past few years, the National Archives has worked with many of these groups to make our holdings increasingly findable and accessible, our goal being to meet the people where they are. This past fall, we took the first step toward building a relationship with the “online encyclopedia that anyone can edit.” When we first began exploring the idea of a National Archives-Wikipedia relationship, Liam Wyatt was one of, was the one who pointed us in the right direction and put us in touch with the local DC-area Wikipedian community. Early in our correspondence, we were encouraged and inspired when Liam wrote that he could quote “quite confidently say that the potential for collaboration between NARA and the Wikimedia projects are both myriad and hugely valuable - in both directions.” I couldn’t agree more. Though many of us have been enthusiastic users of the Free Encyclopedia for years, this was our first foray into turning that enthusiasm into an ongoing relationship. As Kristen Albrittain and Jill James of the National Archives Social Media staff met with the DC Wikipedians, they explained the Archives’ commitment to the Open Government principles of transparency, participation, and collaboration and the ways in which projects like the Wikipedian in Residence could exemplify those values.

Now, few people reading their morning papers three months ago at home, with the horrors of city so graphically depicted, would have conjectured that within four weeks of the final charge on the city walls, the ringing sound of the cleek and the call of "Fore!" would be heard resounding in the same sanguinary vicinity. Such was the case, however, a good nine-hole course (which would compare very favourably with many British inland courses) being at that time in full swing and working order. Governed by a board of 25 trustees in accordance with the British Museum Act of 1963 and the Museums and Galleries Act of 1992, the museum is a non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The museum’s stated purpose is “to hold for the benefit and education of humanity a collection representative of world cultures and to ensure that the collection is housed in safety, conserved, curated, researched and exhibited” (British Museum n.d.). The British Museum originated with the collection belonging to physician and naturalist, Sir Hans Sloane (1660–1753), which consisted of natural history specimens, ethnographic material, antiquities, jewellery, coins, medals, prints, and orientalia. This was combined with a large library of manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Cotton, and the Harleian Library, the manuscript collection of the earls of Oxford. Expanded in 1757 with the addition of King George II’s donation of the old Royal Library, the museum thus originally mainly consisted of natural history specimens, books and manuscripts. In 1772 the museum acquired its first collection of notable antiquities with the Greek vases belonging to Sir William Hamilton. In 1807 it created a specific Department of Antiquities which, in 1860, was divided into three: Greek and Roman Antiquities; Oriental Antiquities; and Coins and Medals.

    The African Bronze Art Culture of the Bight of Benin and its Influence on Modern Art This article is dedicated to Dr. Leroy Bynum, the pioneer Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at Albany State University (2006-2014), for his 22-years of devoted service to this institution. Emmanuel Konde Department of History and Political Science Introduction There are two “Benins” in West Africa. Both straddle the coastline area known as the Bight of Benin that encompasses, among other nations, Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. One is the former Kingdom of Benin in present-day Nigeria; the other a successor state of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, now called the Republic of Benin. These kingdoms were the products of two significant waves of social change that dominated Africa’s history from the earliest times to the 19th century: migration and state formation. Migration and state formation trends in Africa’s precolonial history often intersected and interwove. As John Lamphear observed, these trends involved internal population movements “that typically led to the formation of new societies, linguistic groups, and states.”1 Historical evidence suggests that the rise of the two Benin kingdoms was influenced by similar social forces and that the founders of these kingdoms shared a strong cultural affinity. Consequently, both Benins developed a sculptural art form in bronze casting of high quality that probably issued from the same culture complex and shared experiences. If the peoples of the kingdoms of Benin and Dahomey were not originally the same people who were eventually separated by migrations occasioned by the struggles of state formation, at least a vibrant and dynamic culture contact between them culminated in a diffusion of arts and crafts that ultimately resulted in striking similarities between their bronze sculptures.

D Department of History, Geography, Museum Studies The twenty first century has seen a push towards the righting of past wrongs, as social awareness has been on the rise. One such wrong that has currently caught the public’s attention is the repatriation of artifacts. Museums throughout the West are filled with objects that have been acquired through a variety of means, some, if looked at through a twenty first century lens would come across as immoral or even illegal. Museums in the West have been hesitant to hand over ownership of these objects back to the cultures that produced them. Though many of the reasons given for the reluctance to return the objects are legitimate, the notion of Western paternalism still looms large. My thesis will examine the link between repatriation and paternalism by primarily examining Nigeria’s efforts in seeking the repatriation of the Benin Bronzes from the British Museums. I will also look into repatriation claims to a lesser extent, including the Elgin Marbles and the repatriation of indigenous human remains in the US and Australia. Through the examination of historical newspapers, academic journals, monographs, I will argue that the hesitance in granting repatriation by Western Museum is directly linked to generations of paternalism from the West, towards these societies seeking repatriation. Furthermore, I will argue that this paternalism was fostered by the museums that hold these objects.

Western museums are beset with demands to give back stolen property -- the cultural heritage of oppressed people plundered by colonial armies in the 19th century or taken unfairly by grasping missionaries or egregious ambassadors. No less than 90% of African cultural property resides in European museums, according to a report commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has decided that much of it must be returned. However, the British Museum has refused to give back to Greece the half of the Parthenon Marbles stolen by Lord Elgin. In law, a thief is not allowed to keep his or her ill-gotten gains, no matter how long ago they were taken, or how much he or she may have improved them. In the past, a lot of cultural property was wrongfully extracted from places that are now independent states.
