Lullo, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation is an exploration of the cultural biography of toiletry case sets in early China. It traces the multiple significances that toiletry items accrued as they moved from contexts of everyday life to those of ritualized death, and focuses on the Late Warring States Period (5th c. BCE) through the Han Dynasty (206 BCE-220 CE), when they first appeared in burials. Toiletry case sets are painted or inlaid lacquered boxes that were filled with a variety of tools for beautification, including combs, mirrors, cosmetic substances, tweezers, hairpins and a selection of personal items. Often overlooked as ordinary, non-ritual items placed in burials to comfort the deceased, these sets have received little scholarly attention beyond what they reveal about innovations in lacquer technologies. -
Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service Ancient Gold of the Iceni
Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service Ancient gold of the Iceni found in Suffolk A morning’s metal detecting back in 2008 lead to the discovery of 840 Iron Age gold coins - the largest hoard of its type found in Britain in over 150 years. Now Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service has until the end of June to raise £300,000 to save this outstanding archaeological treasure for the nation and people of Suffolk. The coins were buried just over 2000 years ago by members of the Iceni tribe whose kingdom covered Norfolk, north Suffolk and parts of Cambridgeshire. The coins were buried about 40 years before queen Boudica led her famous revolt against the Romans. They offer an unparalleled glimpse into life on the eve of the Roman invasion and are part of the origins and long history of Suffolk communities. Whilst the museum gets down to the business of fundraising people will be able to have a sneak preview of 200 of the coins at Ipswich Museum from May 3 rd until June 10 th . The coins officially belong to the Crown until the museum has raised the money to buy them and they are on display with special permission from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Caroline McDonald, Curator of archaeology at the museum is particularly excited at their arrival. ‘Suffolk earth has revealed some of the nations most outstanding treasure finds in recent decades. The Amazing Anglo-Saxon ship burial at Sutton Hoo in 1939, the stunning silver Roman dinner service found at Mildenhall during World War II and more recently the Hoxne hoard of Roman coins and artefacts found in the 1990s. -

In early Anglo-Saxon England, the practice of post-Roman Christianity adapted after the Anglo-Saxon migration. The contemporary texts all agree that Christianity continued to be practiced into the fifth and sixth centuries but the archaeological record reflects a predominantly Anglo-Saxon culture. My research compiles the evidence for post-Roman Christian practice on the east coast of England from cemeteries and Roman churches to determine the extent of religious change after the migration. Despite operating on a reduced budget, we were able to significantly increase our programmatic impact in the areas of student learning and adding quality content to Wikipedia. With regards to our mission, the past year has been the most successful to date. At the end of 2016, our Year of Science initiative culminated with more than 6,300 students engaged in improving the English Wikipedia’s underdeveloped science content while improving their writing, information literacy, critical thinking, collaboration, and online communications skills. The science students enrolled in our Classroom Program created 637 articles and improved more than 5,670. These articles have provided more than 300 million Wikipedia readers around the globe with free access to high-quality science information in 2016 alone. During the most active time of the year, we produced almost 6% of all science content on the English Wikipedia. Our Year of Science initiative has been so successful that volunteers in Brazil are gearing up for a similar initiative on the Portuguese Wikipedia in 2018. -

Licenced under CC BY-SA 2.0 / image cropped. 3 Commons Library Briefing, 9 June 2017 Summary This paper gives an outline of the more recent history of the Parthenon sculptures, their acquisition by the British Museum and the long-running debate about suggestions they be removed from the British Museum and returned to Athens. The Parthenon sculptures consist of marble, architecture and architectural sculpture from the Parthenon in Athens, acquired by Lord Elgin between 1799 and 1810. Often referred to as both the Elgin Marbles and the Parthenon marbles, “Parthenon sculptures” is the British Museum’s preferred term.1 Lord Elgin’s authority to obtain the sculptures was the subject of a Select Committee inquiry in 1816. It found they were legitimately acquired, and Parliament then voted the funds needed for the British Museum to acquire them later that year. -

Originalveroffentlichung in: Britannia 11, 1980, S. 289-301 A Reconsideration of some Fourth-Century British Mosaics By REINHARD STUPPERICH oman Britain in late antiquity is an area of special interest to the archaeologist, because life was flourishing peacefully there at a time when we hear about disorder and destruc R tion afflicting the nearby provinces on the continent. Nevertheless - and this perhaps increases the interest - we know very little about cultural life, about the state of education and knowledge in the British provinces at this time. The Channel, which protected Britain from the majority of the invaders, might seem to have had its effect also on the cultural influx from Gaul. The literary sources, which very seldom mention Britain after the Severi, provide scarcely any useful information. There is virtually no one prominent in literary or even political life known to have come from Britain. Nor do we know anything about the cultural effect of the court of the British usurpers or of the presence of Constantius Chlorus and his son Constantine.1 A. A. Barrett has recently considered this problem and has rehearsed all the quotations and reminiscences which give evidence of the influence of classical literature in Britain.2 This is very helpful, but is too restrictive for the general question of the degree of education to be found in fourth-century Britain. One has to look for more than purely literary reflections, for other traces indicating knowledge ultimately derived from traditional education or the reading of classical authors. A wider formulation of the question will necessarily lead to a less precise yet nonetheless interesting answer. -

For this process I examined the theories of Helen Cixious with regard to the space and writing; Judith Butler’s idea of gender and performativity; as well as incorporating ideas related to contemporary performance art. Furthermore my own writing and performance is growing as a body of work parallel to my thesis, this will be presented in another book, which will, in turn, implicate the relationship between theory and practice. The first chapter of my thesis explores the definitions of Feminine Writing”, I examined the book Three Steps on the Ladders of Writing by Helene Cixous published in 1994. I chose her to study because she is the first feminist who introduced the theory of Feminine Writing. I was so inspired by her writing that I began to write about myself. She said: “We have to write about our story, our history, and ourselves.
