Este curso plantea el surrealismo como hecho histórico, y como sistema vigente, de utilidad para Class Description establecer relaciones creativas. Se desarrollará un temario basado en el estudio del fenómeno surrealista, desde sus precedentes históricos, sus creadores y sus descendientes. Realizando, ejercicios prácticos para que los alumnos tengan su propia experiencia surrealista. Es fundamental la participación al máximo en las clases aportando las ideas compartiendo opiniones sobre los temas de estudio. Creando un espíritu de “tertulia” con la participación de todos. Se realizarán algunas visitas a exposiciones, conferencias, obras de teatro o películas que se programen en Madrid, dentro del periodo del curso y que estén relacionadas con el surrealismo. Los objetivos básicos de esta asignatura son: Desired Outcomes Aprender la historia del surrealismo y poder identificar las ideas filosóficas, artísticas y literarias del movimiento a través de lecturas, visitas a los museos y el estudio intensivo de las obras en la clase. La asistencia al museo Reina Sofía u otros, de interés para el curso, las notas sobre Estética y teoría de las Artes (Friedrich Nietzsche), estudiando el apartado El respeto a la representabilidad de La interpretación de los sueños de Sigmund Freud, las teorías de Carl G. Jung (acercamiento al inconsciente, la importancia de los sueños y el papel de los símbolos), así como los ejercicios prácticos de los que serán protagonistas los alumnos, experimentando desde sí mismos asuntos y técnicas que el surrealismo dio como formas de la relación con la creatividad y el encuentro con lo “maravilloso”. Los apuntes de poetas y escritores surrealistas, las diversas entrevistas con artistas del surrealismo y sus descendientes a través de películas o videos a ver en casa, donde estos expresan sus experiencias, proporcionarán una visión personal que harán que el alumno comprenda mejor la proyección de planteamientos formales entre el arte contemporáneo. Requisitos y evaluación: Habrá, tres ensayos (de 5 páginas cada uno) de libre elección relacionados Assessment con los estudios realizados del curso. For more information, see Study Away and Disability Attendance Policy Study abroad at Global Academic Centers is an academically intensive and immersive experience in which students from a wide range of backgrounds exchange ideas in discussion-based seminars. Learning in such an environment depends on the active participation of all students. And since classes typically meet once or twice a week, even a single absence can cause a student to miss a significant portion of a course. To ensure the integrity of this academic experience, class attendance at the centers is mandatory, and unexcused absences will be penalized with a two percent deduction from the student’s final course grade for every week's worth of classes missed. Students are responsible for making up any work missed due to absence. Repeated absences in a course may result in harsher penalties including failure. Unexcused absences affect students’ grades: In classes meeting twice a week, a 1% deduction from the student’s final course grade occurs on the occasion of each unexcused absence. Absences are excused only for illness, religious observance, and emergencies. Illness: For a single absence, students may be required to provide a doctor’s note, at the discretion of the Assistant Directors of Academics. In the case of two consecutive absences, students must provide a doctor’s note. Exams, quizzes, and presentations will not be made up without a doctor’s note. Religious Observance: Students observing a religious holiday during regularly scheduled class time are entitled to miss class without any penalty to their grade. This is for the holiday only and does not include the days of travel that may come before and/or after the holiday. Students must notify their instructor and the Academic Office in writing via email one week in advance before being absent for this purpose. If exams, quizzes, and presentations are scheduled on a holiday a student will observe, the Assistant Directors, in coordination with the instructor, will reschedule them. Although he left the navy, the experience of those nights at sea may well have been the starting point for the voyages he was to make in his painting over a lifetime, at first into a fabricated symbolic realm, and even- tually into the expanding spaces he created on his canvases. The trajectory of Gordon Onslow Ford’s voyages began at his birth- place in Wendover, England and led to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and to three years at sea as a junior officer in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fleets of the British Navy. He resigned from the navy in order to study art in Paris, where he became the youngest member of the pre-war Surrealist group. At the start of World War II, he returned to England for active duty. While in London awaiting a naval assignment, he organized a Surrealist exhibition and oversaw the publication of Surrealist poetry and artworks that had been produced the previous summer in France (fig.

Arp also created many collages. He worked, like other surrealists, with chance and intuition to create art instead of using reason and logic, later becoming a member of the “Abstraction-Création” art movement. 3 André Breton ahn-DRAY bruh-TAWN A founder of surrealism, avant-garde writer and artist André Breton originally trained to be a doctor, serving in the French army’s neuropsychiatric center during World War I.     Frida Kahlo - connections between surrealist women in Mexico 27th september to 10th january Curated by researcher Teresa Arcq, Frida Kahlo: connections between surrealist women in Mexico exhibition, with some 100 works by 16 artists, reveals how an intricate network with numerous characters was set up around the figure of Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907, Coyoacán, Mexico - July 13, 1954, Coyoacán, Mexico). This extract focuses especially women artists born or living in Mexico, acting as the protagonists - alongside Kahlo – of powerful productions, such as Maria Izquierdo, Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington. Throughout her life, Frida Kahlo painted only 143 screens. In this exhibition, rare and unique in Brazil, about 20 of them have been put together, in addition to 13 works on paper – nine drawings, two collages and two lithographs -, providing the Brazilian public with a broad overview of her plastic thinking. Her strong presence further pervades the exhibition through the works of other participating artists who depicted her iconic figure. Through photography, the works of Lola Álvarez Bravo, Lucienne Bloch and Kati Horna are to be highlighted. Images of Frida are also impregnated on the lenses of Nickolas Muray, Bernard Silberstein, Hector Garcia, Martim Munkácsi and a lithograph by Diego Rivera, Naked (Frida Kahlo), 1930. Among Mexican women artists related to Surrealism, the abundance of symbolic self- portraits and portraits come out as a surprise. Out of the 20 paintings by Frida in this exhibition, six are self-portraits. There are two more of her paintings that bring her presence, as in El abrazo de amor del Universo, la terra (Mexico), Diego, yo y el senõr Xóloti, 1933, and Diego em mi Pensamiento, 1943, plus a lithograph, Frida y el aborto, 1932.

La majoria de moviments de tota la història de l’art es donen en un context europeu o mundial, i ademés ja formen part d’un objecte d’estudi detallat tant a les diverses assignatures de batxillerat com universitàries. Però els petits grups artístics que, com a fenòmen, es consoliden a Espanya a mitjan de segle XIX, sembla que tinguin un tractament més superficial, com otorgant-lis menys importancia. Pucci All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT My thesis investigates an interdisciplinary narrative of the transatlantic migration of Surrealism to Mexico during the 1940s. I focus on the ways exiled European Surrealists approached notions of Mexican material culture in a hybrid society where local traditions coexisted with a global modernity. Looking to popular and print culture outlets, I concentrate on how Mexican material culture was perceived, promoted, and marketed through a Surrealist lens. Specifically, I consider the collaboration of the German pharmaceutical company Casa Bayer, S.A. and exiled Spanish-born Surrealist Remedios Varo, who produced a series of medical advertisements during her first decade in Mexico City from 1943 to 1949. Through an examination of Varo’s work, my thesis explores the changing boundaries of fine and commercial art that resulted from the efforts of artists who participated in modern mass culture and consumerism. I investigate the significance of her Surrealist advertisements for Casa Bayer as a material culture bound on one side with fine art and the other side with the development of Mexican advertising. This case study supports my argument that Surrealism, as a transnational aesthetic, was one alternative way of demonstrating the new cultural meanings of advertising in an ambiguous, modern Mexican society.
