Lideraba dicho grupo el profesor José Manuel Azcona, catedrático de Historia Contemporánea de la URJC y director de la Cátedra Iberoamericana de Excelencia URJC-Santander Presdeia, que estudia la emigración y las relaciones bilaterales España-Iberoamérica. En Novi Sad, fue la profesora Bojana Kovačević Petrović quien, con generosa amabilidad y gran profesionalidad, acogió a los profesores provenientes de Madrid y animó a los alumnos a participar en los encuentros. Las jornadas académicas fueron una experiencia realmente positiva y enriquecedora para ambas partes. Poder interactuar bajo el paraguas de la cultura balcánica con la española, desde perspectivas científico-culturales y, al mismo tiempo, lograr difundir conocimientos sobre España e Iberoamérica, significó un reto de alta significación . Que generó significativas sinergias entre los profesores españoles y sus colegas de la Universidad de Novi Sad y, especialmente, con la profesora Bojana Kovačević Petrović y sus estudiantes de lengua y cultura española. Tanto es así que de esta colaboración se ha surgido la publicación conjunta que ahora presentamos. Con formato de libro colectivo, conformado por diez capítulos escritos por autores de varios países, pero en los cuales el hilo conductor es la relación entre Serbia, España e Iberoamérica. Nuestra intención, cuyo resultado esperamos haber logrado, ha sido desde el principio la de publicar un texto transversal y multidisciplinar, para otorgar al manuscrito original mayor pluralidad, y acoger la capacidad creativa de cada uno de los autores. Por ello, tenemos ante nosotros una publicación realmente poliedrica. Para empezar este ensayo deambula por el interesante ámbito de las directas relaciones de dos campos de estudio hermanos del ámbito al que pertenecemos todos los profesores-autores: la literatura y la historia. Ambos se tratan como elementos icónicos, como fuente del conocimiento. No en vano, buscamos, desde nuestras respectivas atalayas, analizar con honestidad y método, la propia esencia de la sociedad. Nos impregnamos de sus emociones, de su mentalidad, como vectores significativos de la relación con el pasado. Al fin y a la postre, la historia y la ficción aportan respuestas diferentes pero 5 Desde España y Serbia hacia Iberoamérica complementarias, lo que está en consonancia con la mayor libertad de interpretación de la literatura frente a las reglas que acotan el trabajo cotidiano de la historia científica. La literatura parece otear el futuro a partir del mundo presente o pretérito, y a ello ayuda la ciencia historiográfica. Y es que la interdisciplinariedad entre las ciencias sociales es un hecho que viene imponiéndose desde hace treinta años, con herencia preclara de lo que se inició en el setecientos, en el Siglo de las Luces. Y lo que, con gran acierto y maestría propugnó la Escuela de los Annales a mitad del pasado siglo XX. De esta forma, la unión de la historia y la literatura nos lleva al análisis certero de la cultura y las mentalidades, y las fuentes literarias emanan de la base societaria al tratar, en no pocas ocasiones, sobre personajes anónimos pero significativos como colectivo capaz de ser motor pautador de la sociedad estudiada. La literatura es modelo de indagación, forma transparente de conocer etapas del pasado, crisol analítico de colectivos humanos convivenciales. El texto literario nos fotografía momentos concretos y puede acelerar el papel de la imaginación que los historiadores equilibran en la amalgama de la ficción y la realidad, como puntal referencial para ubicar los tiempos de creación de cualquier escritor. La novelística genera enunciados simbólicos que traen realidades de similar estilo bajo un cosmos de ficción arropado por sus propias circunstancias, y crea mensajes de su inherente realidad. Por ello, los historiadores, cuando escriben, codifican hechos del pasado y bajo su propio código deontológico y honesta interpretación, ilustran racimos de realidad que pueden y deben tener sustentación en fuentes literarias. Así pues, debemos considerar la construcción escrita de novelas creativas bajo el plano diacrónico e histórico de la palabra hecha cultura, con su apreciación como un signo semiótico. La mixtura entre un texto de la novelística y la documentación histórica debe resultarnos un hecho totalmente natural. En general, además, los lectores de manuscritos de ciencia histórica suelen tener respeto al cosmos literario por lo que este impregna de la vida cotidiana. Toda obra literaria posee capacidad hermenéutica que determina, como decimos, su amalgama con la interpretación historicista. Siempre al amparo de la exaltación de valores, sentimientos y simbología rica y compleja que favorece el estudio social. El debate sobre la historia y literaria se extendió a toda la teoría literaria moderna, para convertirlo en un objeto de trabajo en sí mismo, a menudo con una fuerte influencia en el resto de las áreas humanísticas de 6 Desde España y Serbia hacia Iberoamérica conocimiento. En ocasiones, incluso se plantea la historia como una descripción de la evolución literaria, de la variabilidad de las series y tipologías de la novelística con un programa percibido, nítido y basado en el pensamiento colectivo. En el fuego de definir la teoría de las formas literarias, hemos de consignar la reunión de la estructura (a-histórica) con el sistema (histórico). Tal reunión, no una coincidencia, abre el camino para la descripción de formas de la escritura en las dos áreas de conocimiento que estudiamos. Así, la historia y la literatura deben ambientarse en la historia social. Su verdadero objeto fundamental es la diacronía planteada en el curso imparable del discurso literario. La historia es siempre un debate sobre un dominio en busca del propio objeto. Que recibe resultados de otros tipos de investigación propios de la novelística. Así, el rango de conocimiento literario, parece ser su hija elegida. Tampoco hemos olvidado la significación de las relaciones internacionales en el estudio de la historia, y de hecho hemos incluido textos significativos en este libro. Although he left the navy, the experience of those nights at sea may well have been the starting point for the voyages he was to make in his painting over a lifetime, at first into a fabricated symbolic realm, and even- tually into the expanding spaces he created on his canvases. The trajectory of Gordon Onslow Ford’s voyages began at his birth- place in Wendover, England and led to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and to three years at sea as a junior officer in the Mediterranean and Atlantic fleets of the British Navy. He resigned from the navy in order to study art in Paris, where he became the youngest member of the pre-war Surrealist group. At the start of World War II, he returned to England for active duty. While in London awaiting a naval assignment, he organized a Surrealist exhibition and oversaw the publication of Surrealist poetry and artworks that had been produced the previous summer in France (fig.

Yet, personal ex- periences, although perceived as ephemeral, helped to define the historical discourse capturing man’s resolve to persist in his chosen mission. Over time, Serbian literature and fine arts sustained an unfinished dialogue of the past and the present, merging the individual voices with the collective voices to construct the national narrative. The young writer Miloš Crnjanski observed the sights of destruction and despair that seemed to pale in new literary works pertaining to the war. His novel A Diary about Čarnojević was closely related to his own perilous wartime journey as a conscript in the Austrian army.

She learned photography as an assistant and had her first solo exhibition in 1944 at Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Arts. She described the camera as a way to show “the life I found before me.” Álvarez Bravo was engaged in the Mexican surrealist movement, documenting the lives of many fellow artists in her work. Jean Arp JON ARP (J as in mirage) Jean Arp (also known as Hans Arp), was a German-French sculp- tor, painter, and writer best known for his paper cut-outs and his abstract sculptures. Arp also created many collages. He worked, like other surrealists, with chance and intuition to create art instead of using reason and logic, later becoming a member of the “Abstraction-Création” art movement. 3 André Breton ahn-DRAY bruh-TAWN A founder of surrealism, avant-garde writer and artist André Breton originally trained to be a doctor, serving in the French army’s neuropsychiatric center during World War I.     Frida Kahlo - connections between surrealist women in Mexico 27th september to 10th january Curated by researcher Teresa Arcq, Frida Kahlo: connections between surrealist women in Mexico exhibition, with some 100 works by 16 artists, reveals how an intricate network with numerous characters was set up around the figure of Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907, Coyoacán, Mexico - July 13, 1954, Coyoacán, Mexico). This extract focuses especially women artists born or living in Mexico, acting as the protagonists - alongside Kahlo – of powerful productions, such as Maria Izquierdo, Remedios Varo and Leonora Carrington. Throughout her life, Frida Kahlo painted only 143 screens. In this exhibition, rare and unique in Brazil, about 20 of them have been put together, in addition to 13 works on paper – nine drawings, two collages and two lithographs -, providing the Brazilian public with a broad overview of her plastic thinking. Her strong presence further pervades the exhibition through the works of other participating artists who depicted her iconic figure. Through photography, the works of Lola Álvarez Bravo, Lucienne Bloch and Kati Horna are to be highlighted. Images of Frida are also impregnated on the lenses of Nickolas Muray, Bernard Silberstein, Hector Garcia, Martim Munkácsi and a lithograph by Diego Rivera, Naked (Frida Kahlo), 1930. Among Mexican women artists related to Surrealism, the abundance of symbolic self- portraits and portraits come out as a surprise. Out of the 20 paintings by Frida in this exhibition, six are self-portraits. There are two more of her paintings that bring her presence, as in El abrazo de amor del Universo, la terra (Mexico), Diego, yo y el senõr Xóloti, 1933, and Diego em mi Pensamiento, 1943, plus a lithograph, Frida y el aborto, 1932.

    Filozofski vestnik | Letnik XXXVII | Številka 1 | 2016 | 201–219 Miško Šuvaković* Avant-Gardes in Yugoslavia In this study, I will approach the avant-gardes as interdisciplinary, internation- ally oriented artistic and cultural practices.1 I will present and advocate the the- sis that the Yugoslav avant-gardes were a special geopolitical and geo-aesthetic set of artistic and cultural phenomena defined by the internal dynamics and interrelations of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and by the external dynamics, cosmopolitan relations, and inter- nationalisations of local artistic excess and experimentation with international avant-garde practices. I will devote special attention to the local and interna- tional networking of cities as the political and cultural environments where the avant-gardes took place. Above all, the avant-gardes thereby acquired the char- acter of extremely urban artistic and cultural phenomena. Introductory Interpretation of the Concept of the Avant-garde Discussing the status, functions, and effects of any avant-garde does not boil down to asking what phenomenal or conceptual, i.e. formalist, qualities are characteristic of an avant-garde work of art, the behaviour of an avant-garde artist, or her private or public life. On the contrary, equally important are direc- tional questions regarding the instrumental potentialities or realisations of the avant-garde as an interventional material artistic practice in between or against dominant and marginal domains, practices, or paradigms within historical or 201 present cultures. Avant-garde artistic practices are historically viewed as trans- formations of artistic, cultural, and social resistances, limitations, and ruptures within dominant, homogeneous or hegemonic artistic, cultural, and social en- vironments.

Pucci All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT My thesis investigates an interdisciplinary narrative of the transatlantic migration of Surrealism to Mexico during the 1940s. I focus on the ways exiled European Surrealists approached notions of Mexican material culture in a hybrid society where local traditions coexisted with a global modernity. Looking to popular and print culture outlets, I concentrate on how Mexican material culture was perceived, promoted, and marketed through a Surrealist lens. Specifically, I consider the collaboration of the German pharmaceutical company Casa Bayer, S.A. and exiled Spanish-born Surrealist Remedios Varo, who produced a series of medical advertisements during her first decade in Mexico City from 1943 to 1949. Through an examination of Varo’s work, my thesis explores the changing boundaries of fine and commercial art that resulted from the efforts of artists who participated in modern mass culture and consumerism. I investigate the significance of her Surrealist advertisements for Casa Bayer as a material culture bound on one side with fine art and the other side with the development of Mexican advertising. This case study supports my argument that Surrealism, as a transnational aesthetic, was one alternative way of demonstrating the new cultural meanings of advertising in an ambiguous, modern Mexican society.
