    September 2012 Knights of Columbus’ good works assist parish and community The local councils of the Knights of Columbus (KofC) remain vigilant in providing assistance to those in need while adhering to their Roman Catholic beliefs that are the driving force behind the organization as it continues to grow. “I always recognized it as a great service group within the church, which ties faith to service and service to faith,” says Jack Schreader, a member since 2005 and Grand Knight of the KofC, Bishop N.Z. Lorrain Council 1531 of Pembroke. “It’s a great group of guys.” On October 2, 1881, Father Michael J. McGivney called together a group of men to a church basement in New Haven, Connecticut. At that gathering, a pledge was made to form a fraternal order based on their devotion to their country, families and faith. A life insurance program was established by the founders to provide for widows and orphans of deceased members, which still exists to this day. Those wishing to join the KofC must be 18 years of age and be practicing Roman Catholics in union with the Holy See. Prospective applicants must accept the teaching authority of the Catholic Church on matters of faith and morals, strive to live in accordance with the Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration on January 26, 2012, featuring the Icon and the Knights of Columbus precepts of the Church, and be in good standing in the newly formed choir. Declining numbers of priests and changing demographics are creating challenges when it comes to providing ordained ministry to all of the 96 parishes across the diocese. Bishop Donald Bolen and diocesan leaders are therefore seeking input through a series of deanery and parish meetings about both the challenges and the blessings being experienced in the diocese, and to ask a number of questions seeking suggestions and feedback to creatively address the reality that fewer priests are available to serve in the diocese. “I would ask the diocese to engage in a creative reflection process, faithful to the Church, in asking where the Spirit might be leading us,” said Bolen, noting the importance of ordained ministry to Catholics as Eucharistic people. “We do a great deal of work in vocations – Priests serving across the diocese of Saskatoon gathered with the bishop at the start of Holy Week April 18 to celebrate the Chrism Mass, along but what more could we do to enhance that with parish representatives who came to collect the sacred oils to be used in sacraments in the year ahead.

While the district has experienced some unique challenges so far this year, we also have much for which we are thankful as well as people and events that have inspired us. Adversity reminds us of what is truly important and reaffirms the strong and cohesive “family” we have here at Hartland Consolidated Schools. Our teachers, administrators, students and families continue to work together to deliver and achieve educational excellence. I am extremely proud to be the superintendent of a district that can persevere in both good times and bad and continue to put our children first. For those who require a time of solace, a religious retreat may be the prime opportunity to reaffirm their faith. The sixth annual Men’s/Women’s Retreat was held this past January 25–27 and February 8–10 respectively at the Marguerite Centre in Pembroke. The weekend- long men’s event was hosted by Father Denis Lemieux and David Guzman, and the women’s event by Father Tom Zoeller and Renée Sylvain, all from the Madonna House Apostolate in Combermere. Group discussions, music and prayer are just some of the activities in which attendees participated. “The objective is to provide a weekend of spiritual growth and reflection,” says Mark Reilander, coordinator of the men’s retreat. “It’s a chance for both men and women to get away from the busy work world and home duties in order to grow spiritually.” “The weekend entailed mass and talks given by the team leaders,” says Joyce Reilander, who coordinates the women’s retreat. “There is also quiet time in the chapel for people to reflect on the subject matters that have been given. Scott McCaig, CC as Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Canada April 8, 2016 t is with great joy and gratitude to God that the Companions of the Cross announce that Fr. Scott McCaig, CC has been named Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Canada by I his Holiness Pope Francis. Bishop-elect Scott McCaig, CC is from Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. He entered into full communion with the Catholic Church in 1987, and after serving with NET Catholic Youth Ministries USA joined the Companions of the Cross in 1989 in Ottawa. He obtained an undergraduate degree in History from Carleton University, a Bachelor’s degree in Sacred Theology from the University of St. Paul, and a Masters of Divinity degree from the University of Toronto (Toronto School of Theology). He was ordained to the priesthood in 1995 by Archbishop Marcel Gervais. He has served as an Associate Pastor, Parish Administrator, Hospital Chaplain and Director of Formation for the Companions of the Cross from 2000 to 2006. He served two terms as General Superior of the Society from 2006 to 2016. Bishop-elect Scott serves on the Board of Renewal Ministries Canada and has participated in missionary outreach to over 15 countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia. He also serves on the Board of Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) and is involved in the spiritual formation of members of the movement. He regularly assists with training of missionaries with NET Ministries of Canada and is a co-Chaplain to the Spiritual Motherhood of Priests Apostolate in Ottawa.
