Lisad .................................................................................................................................................... 23 3 SUMMARY In 2016 several biodiversity studies were carried out in Tallinn within the Interreg Central Baltic Programme project "NATTOURS – sustainable nature trails in cities, using new IT-solutions". Biodiversity studies were carried out in three selected focus areas to fill in the knowledge gaps of relevant groups of wildlife, depending on the data deficiencies in different sites. Since the aim of the project is raising awareness of the possibilities of nature tourism among both local residents and tourists, the new data is being used to introduce urban wildlife inhabiting the nature areas on websites, information boards, dissemination seminars etc. Biodiversity studies carried out in the focus areas of the project are as follows: Paljassaare Rocca al Mare Kadrioru Park Dragonflies X Breeding birds X Bumblebees and butterflies X Bats X X Vascular plants X X Dragonflies 14 species of dragonflies were observed in Paljassaare bird conservation area, which raises the total number to 16. This is a decent result for any wetland area in Estonia and quite a good result for an urban setting. 16 species corresponds to 42% of dragonfly species in Tallinn. Neither Habitats Directive nor nationally protected species were found. Most abundant species were migrant hawker (Aeshna mixta) and three Sympetrum species (S. danae, S. striolatum, S. vulgatum): black darter, common darter, vagrant darter. These species prefer shallow vegetated ponds and there are plenty of these in the Paljassaare wetlands. Bumblebees More than half of Estonian bumblebee species were recorded in Rocca al Mare. Among the 14 bumblebee and 3 cuckoo bumblebee species there were two species that were discovered first time in Tallinn. Bombus semenoviellus is a recently rare species that is expanding its area westward and is becoming more widespread. Short-haired bumblebee (B. subterraneus) is a rare long-tongued species that is irreplacable as a pollinator of deep flowers, such as field beans. Common species were common carder bee (B. pascuorum), red-tailed bumblebee (B. lapidarius) and white-tailed bumblebee (B. lucorum). Bumblebees benefit from brownfield history of the site that offers them nesting places underground and diverse nectar-rich flowers of the wastelands. Butterflies 4 29 species of butterflies were recorded in Rocca al Mare area which corresponds to about half of butterfly species recorded in Tallinn during the past decade. Although no rarities were detected, the site is among the butterfly richest areas in Tallinn. Most common species were the peacock (Inachis io), green-veined white (Pieris napi) and the essex skipper (Thymelicus lineola). There were more species in brownfield areas with more nectar rich plants and shelter from the wind. Breeding birds Rocca al Mare area has a reputation for being the bottleneck of bird migration that is passing through Tallinn. Now for the first time breeding birds were surveyed in the reedbeds and forests of this narrow green area. 48 species and 176 pairs were recorded, incuding protected species like corn crake (Crex crex), water rail (Rallus aquaticus) and shelduck (Tadorna tadorna). Most common breeding birds were the sedge warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus), scarlet rosefinch (Carpodacus erythrinus) and great tit (Parus major). Bats Bat survey was conducted in two green areas on the same potential migration route – Paljassaare bird conservation area and Rocca al Mare. 9 of 10 species of bats in Tallinn were recorded and new data on the distribution of rarities – common pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pipistrellus) and soprano pipistrelle (Pipistrellus pygmaeus). Paljassaare was not particularly magnetic to bats, probably owing to more windy conditions and being distant from large green areas. Rocca al Mare, on the other hand, was much more significant feeding site for bats during July to September, due to good connectedness to other green areas. By far the most common bat species was the northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii), followed by Nathusius’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusius) and daubenton’s bat (Myotis daubentonii). Vascular plants Vascular plant inventories were carried out in Kadriorg Park and Rocca al Mare. 200 and 195 species were recorded respectively, including a few rare species, like Poa alpina and Armeria maritima. Cluster analysis was used in order to distinguish the plant communities in the two areas. In Kadriorg park, three priority habitat types were described that belong to the Habitats Directive annex 1, including rare alvar biotopes. Survey plots with plant species richness (25 species) were also discovered here. In Rocca al Mare, three coastal habitat types under the Habitats Directive where described. 5 1. Sissejuhatus Interregi Kesk-Läänemere programmi ja Keskkonnainvesteeringute Keskuse toel viidi projektis „NATTOURS – jätkusuutlikud loodusrajad linnades, kasutades uusi IT-lahendusi“ läbi mitmed elustiku uuringud. Uuringute eesmärk oli parandada teadmisi elustikurühmade kohta projekti kolmel fookusalal Tallinnas ning kasutada saadud andmeid loodusteadlikkuse tõstmisel ning erinevate infomaterjalide koostamisel ja info jagamisel. 2016. aastal viidi läbi järgmised elustiku uuringud: Paljassaare Rocca al Mare Kadrioru Park Kiililised X Kimalased ja päevaliblikad X Haudelinnud X Nahkhiired X X Soontaimed X X Käesolevas aruandes antakse esmalt ülevaated kuuest uuritud liigirühmast Eestis ja Tallinnas lähtudes varasematest koondülevaadetest. Veskimetsa-Mustjõe Selts on korraldanud alates 2016. aastast kogukonnale suunatud ühisüritusi, millest on saanud juba traditsioon: Talvekohvikupäev, "Teeme ära" talgud, Puhvetipäev ja Külapäev. Käesolev aasta on olnud igatepidi eriline ja teistmoodi. Kuna sel aastal jäi talv ära, ilmaolud olid kesised ja ettearvamatud, siis olime sunnitud talvekohvikupäevast sel aastal loobuma. Ootasime talgupäeva, ent viirusega seotud kriisiperiood tegi plaanidesse muudatuse. Traditsiooniliselt juuni lõpus toimuv Puhvetipäev oli välja kuulutatud, ent kuna oli teadmata, millised on selle hetke võimalused rahvarohket üritust korraldada, võttis selts vastu otsuse Puhvetipäev korraldada

We will make sure that the environment would be clean, pleasant and offers the city people a possibility for nature experiences. ere are two beaches in Põhja- Tallinn city district – Pelgurand or Stroomi beach which has been used as a bathing beach for decades, and Pikakari beach which is located near the Paljassaare Special Protection Area for birds. Both beaches have very clean water and host hundreds of people each summer. As a recognition for excellent environmental management, Pikakari beach is awarded the Blue Flag eco-label. Arvo Sarapuu Deputy Mayor of Tallinn Pikakari beach is equipped with changing cabanas, volleyball court, trash bins and with other necessities. Kids can play on two playgrounds. Sunset from the Katariina pier offers an especially wondrous view of Tallinn. Employees of the Northern Tallinn Administration have made many efforts to turn Pikakari beach into a beautiful and clean beach. However they cannot take credit for it all, as the sand, sea and sun have been present for thousands of years. Enjoy and take care of this gift for the future generations. The paper deals with the protection of the coastal areas of Tallinn and their primary development into harbours. The coast and coastal buildings are endangered by strong storm waves, especially in case of a high sea accompanying the storm. Due to the influence of waves, the coastal terrace recedes towards the land; in the bays the sands are whether deposited or swept away. Storms have caused major destruction to the coasts of Aegna Island and the Kakumäe Peninsula. The coastal area owners, the local authorities, and the organs of the state should take measures to protect the coasts through mutual cooperation and improvement of the valid legislation. The coasts and harbours within the boundaries of Tallinn are predominantly state-owned. In planning the development of the harbours it is necessary to reckon with the increase in passenger transport and sea tourism, environmental protection, safety and economic interests of the city, which have so far been some- what neglected. Tallinn Municipality has begun to rearrange the administration of the coasts and harbours located within the city borders. Muuga Harbour plays a special role in further protection of coasts and development of harbours and could take over a major part of cargo transport within the boundaries of Tallinn.

Naturalness and perception of safety in urban green areas can be two indicators that influence visitor recreational patterns, but their impact may vary (Kabish 2015, Kronenberg 2015). Unmanicured areas with wilderness elements within cities may evoke negative experiences such as fear, disgust, or an uncomfortable feeling because of high-dense vegetation and unmanicured look (Heyman 2012; Bixler and Floyd, 1997). Differently from the mainstream some studies have found that despite dense vegetation considered being less safe it is not less preferred and more naturalistic vegetation can be introduced into parks and green spaces without necessarily making the parks appear unsafe (Wang et al 2017; Jorgensen 2007). Sites and Methods The current study provides an overview of the visitor survey of three different urban green areas in Estonian capital Tallinn: 1) historical and most prominent urban park Kadriorg; 2) former strictly closed Soviet military area Paljassaare which is still very wild looking and basically unmanaged; 3) mixed area which has one part of wetland and shrubland in former inaccessible coastal area and another part of classically managed park Rocca Al Mare. Similar areas can be found all over Eastern Europe where Soviet Army established strictly closed areas close to the strategically important cities and after the fall of the Iron Curtain those areas turned into the no man’s land with criminal elements.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA The length of the Estonian coastline is 3,794 km of which 1,242 km are on the mainland and 2,552 km is divided among the 1,500 islands. The country is bounded to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic proper and to the southwest by the Gulf of Riga. Tallinn is the capital of Estonia. It is located in the north of the country on the coast of the Gulf of Finland. The case area covers the marine coast within the Tallinn metropolitan area between Kakumae and Muuga bays (Figure 2). It includes Tallinn urban municipality (linn) and Viimsi suburban municipality (vald) of Harju county (maa). 1.1 Physical process level 1.1.1 Classification According to the coastal typology adopted for the EUROSION project in the scoping study, the case study area can be described as a combination of: 1b.
