PIKAKARI Nature protection and recreation

1 Sea City of is well-known for a large number of green and recreation areas as well as for environmentally friendly way of operation. We will make sure that the environment would be clean, pleasant and offers the city people a possibility for nature experiences. ere are two beaches in Põhja- Tallinn city district – Pelgurand or Stroomi beach which has been used as a bathing beach for decades, and Pikakari beach which is located near the Special Protection Area for birds. Both beaches have very clean water and host hundreds of people each summer. As a recognition for excellent environmental management, Pikakari beach is awarded the Blue Flag eco-label.

Arvo Sarapuu Deputy Mayor of Tallinn

Pikakari beach is equipped with changing cabanas, volleyball court, trash bins and with other necessities. Kids can play on two playgrounds. Sunset from the Katariina pier offers an especially wondrous view of Tallinn. Employees of the Northern Tallinn Administration have made many efforts to turn Pikakari beach into a beautiful and clean beach. However they cannot take credit for it all, as the sand, sea and sun have been present for thousands of years. Enjoy and take care of this gift for the future generations.

Raimond Kaljulaid Head of Northern Tallinn District 2 Whimbrel

ikakari is situated in Paljassaare and is a part of Peninsula. Kopli got its name from hundreds of years ago, when the people of Tallinn used to herd their animals in the woods and pastures of the area. In the past, this was the location of Pa fishing village and a brickyard. Most of the stone roofs of medieval Tallinn were made from the blue clay from Kopli. ere have been several large factories, assembly plants and ports (Bekker Port, Meeruse Port, Vene-Balti Port etc.) on Kopli Peninsula. e water near Kopli Peninsula was considered to be polluted for a long time. At the moment, industrial enterprises employ efficient purification devices and wastewater from housing estates is led to the disposal plant of Paljassaare. In case of rain water, there are mandatory filters for sand and oil, guaranteeing the standard quality of water. According to the bathing water directive of the European Union, the quality of swimming water is estimated as very good, good, satisfactory or deficient. e Health Board has estimated the water of Pikakakari according to the requirements of the directive to be very good. You can find information about the quality of bathing water in particular beaches at this Internet address: http://www. terviseamet.ee/keskkonnatervis/vesi/suplusvesi/avalikud- supluskohad.html. In order to receive the Blue Flag award, the water must be four times cleaner than required in the bathing water directive. e water of Pikakari beach corresponds to the criteria of the Blue Flag.

Pikakari beach is located near Paljassaare Special Protection area — the most bird inhabited area in Tallinn which belongs to the Natura 2000 network. Paljassaare Special Protection Area was established in 2005. Its aim is to protect 30 bird and one butterfly species (the large copper, Lycaena dispar). 3 Reminders for beach visitors 1. Remember and respect the rules of conduct while at the beach. 2. At the beach, behave and act so that you yourself would like to go back. 3. Playing ball may disturb other holiday- makers – it is only allowed in places where others are not nearby. 4. Put your rubbish in the litter bin. We are very thankful if you pick up trash even left there by others.

In the front: barnacle geese.

In the northern and western part of Paljassaare Peninsula, there is a preservation area, established in 16.06.2005. is area of 227 hectares is important in the entire Europe, as 227 species of birds have been Bird watching tower registered there.

According to the data of Tallinn Bird Club, 82 species spotted in Paljassaare are under protection in Estonia; 5 of them are in protection category I, 26 in protection category II and 51 in protection category III. 45 species registered in Paljassaare belong to the 1st additional document of the European Union birds directive. In

8 Common gull 1994–2011, approximately 105 species of birds have nested in Paljassaare and surrounding grounds, 58 species annually.

e aim of the protection area is not to design a recreational area but to create opportunities for bird and nature watch- ing, nature hikes and obtaining nature education. e area is not for camping or making res. For holiday-makers, there is Pikakari beach, opened in 2007, near Katariina Quay on Paljassaare peninsula.

Grey heron (on the left) and little ringed plover. 9 There are many objects under nature protection in Northern Tallinn: Krulli rock, Kopliranna rock, Silver maple Wieri, black poplar, red ash, red juniper. Six plant species under nature protection grow here: the early purple orchid, Marsh Helleborine, Bird’s-nest Orchid, wild pea of seashores, Sea-pink, Small Pasque Flower. A butterfly species under Small pasque flower protection has also been spotted: the Large Copper.

There used to be an oak wood at the northern side of Stroomi Park. Most of it was chopped down in 1912 due to the construction of the Russian-Baltic Shipyard-Machinery and Bekkeri Factory. Now, only five indigenous oaks have been preserved, but are scattered around Kopli: in Kopli Cemetery (perimeter, p=410 cm), on the shipyard territory (p=500 cm), in the tram junction (p=550 cm), Kaluri St. 2 (p=391cm) and Vasara St. 4 (p=459cm)

There are three protected parks in the area: Kopli Park, also known as Birch Park, Kalamaja Cemetery Park and Kopli Cemetery Park. Both cemeteries were closed in the 1950s and turned into a parks. Kopli as well as Kalamaja cemetery parks were taken under protection in 1993. Nowadays, both parks are well developed and popular recreation areas. Kopli (Birch) Park features a boulder field.

e Blue Flag eco-label is an acknowledgement for beaches and marinas with very clean water and exceptional environment management. e beaches with the Blue Flag correspond to 32 environmental criteria. Among other things, they offer the visitors information about nature protection areas and nature conservation objects near the beach. e Blue Flag eco-label is maintained by a Danish organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), www.blueflag.org, in Estonia, the partner organisation of FEE is Estonian Nature Conservation Society www.elks.ee.
