For his article, he interviewed the Minister of National Defence. The minister explained that the East-West confrontation is behind us, and states that the Canadian Forces must look to the future, and be prepared to face new security threats. For the navy this means a new focus on asymmetric threats and littoral operations. “The Cold War is over, [Minister of Defence] Eggleton told Maclean’s. Before, we felt we had to protect ourselves against open-water submarine warfare right into the deepest parts of the ocean. Now, we’re operating mainly within 200 or 300 miles of the coast.”2 The attacks on the World Trade centre and the Pentagon on September 11th are a clear indication that the world we live in is not as safe as we thought it was. North America is not isolated from international terrorists and other security threats. In order to properly defend Canadians against current and future security threats, the navy must be able to sustain combat capable forces, which can be called to perform a wide range of tasks both at home and abroad. From a maritime perspective, as pointed out by the Minister, “In the absence of any major conventional military threat to North America, the primary sovereignty-related function of 1 James L. In the future, it is expected that most maritime nations will have a greater need to protect their maritime sovereignty and resources. Western nations also expect that most future naval international operations will be conducted in littoral waters against small or medium naval power. In the Canadian context the protection of our littoral waters is a shared responsibility. A number of federal, provincial, and municipal police forces and agencies contribute to the protection of our maritime sovereignty and resources. With our large continental shelf the requirement for the protection of our resources move far out to sea, into our large economic exclusion zone (EEZ) and beyond. France was the dominating power in Europe on land and the English were masters of the sea. Behind their wooden wall of ships, they were relatively safe from any invasion force. Napoleon wanted to change this and invade England. In March 1802 a peace treaty was signed between France and England in Amiens, France. But both countries were irritated and angry with each other’s actions in the aftermath of the peace treaty, and it was an uneasy peace. And after some diplomatic quarrels England declared war on France again in May 1803. After war broke out again, Napoleon started preparation for invasion of England – but to have success, he needed to take out the English fleet that protected the English Channel. From 1803 to 1805 a new army of 150 000-200,000 men, known as the Armée des côtes de l'Océan (Army of the Ocean Coasts) or the Armée d'Angleterre (Army of England), was gathered and trained at camps at Boulogne, Bruges and Montreuil. A large "National Flotilla" of invasion barges was built in Channel ports along the coasts of France and the Netherlands. A fleet of nearly 2000 craft. According to the “OXFORD” Dictionary states that “Stealth”- Secret procedure or manner. And the Wikipedia describes “Stealth Technology” as “Stealth technology covers a range of techniques used with aircrafts, ships and missiles, in order to make them less visible (ideally invisible) to radar and other detection methods. Stealth technology allows a Machine to be partially invisible to any means of detection. All it does is reduce the detection range. This is similar to the camouflage tactics used by soldiers in jungle warfare. Stealth Technology aims in minimizing transmitted and reflected energies- heat, light, sound, electric potentials etc- to deny an opponent to locate, track, identify and attack its target. History Of Stealth Technology The concept of Stealth is not at all new. In Second World War allied aircrafts used tin and aluminum in huge amount to confuse German RADARS. Two prototypes were built to study and test low observablity-better known as Stealth technology in 1970's. First ever working Stealth Aircraft was developed by Lockheed Martin in 1983 called the F-117A nicknamed as the “Nighthawk”. First Stealth Ship was developed by Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, US Navy and Lockheed combined in 1985 called the “Sea Shadow(IX-529)” but was never commissioned.
