Para o francês, agradeço a contribuição da querida amiga Cecille Accioly e, para o italiano, do meu querido amigo Marco Tomei , o qual, muito cortês e paciencioso, garimpou todas as livrarias da sua pequena Lucca para encontrar edições em italiano de algumas obras de Carroll que eu precisava ler. 7 Qualquer um que tenha intenção de educar jovens (refiro-me aos que estão entre 12 e 20 anos) precisa dar-se conta da importância de fornecer-lhes recreações mentais saudáveis (Lewis Carroll) 8 Resumo Exímio professor de matemática, Lewis Carroll, pseudônimo de Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832–1898), fez da mistura da matemática com a literatura um ambiente lúdico para a aprendizagem dessa disciplina. Autor dos conhecidos Alice no país das Maravilhas e Alice através do espelho, acabou criando um universo real e complexo no qual se utiliza do que chamamos lógica do nonsense como elemento para motivar o desenvolvimento do pensamento matemática do leitor, levando-o, assim, a aprender, estabelecendo uma ligação entre o concreto (matemática) e o imaginário (seu universo). Com o objetivo de investigar e discutir as potencialidades didáticas de suas obras e de elencar alguns elementos que possam contribuir para uma educação matemática descentralizada da tradicional metodologia de seguir os modelos e decorar fórmulas, visitamos suas obras tendo por base os estudos sobre arqueologia do saber (FOUCAULT, 2007), o pensamento racional e o pensamento simbólico (VERGANI, 2003) e sobre a importância das histórias e narrativas para o desenvolvimento da cognição humana (FARIAS, 2006). Por meio de um estudo descritivo-analítico, utilizamos a construção literária, apresentamos parte de nosso estudo na forma de um romance matemático, visando conferir à matemática escolar um encanto particular, sem privar-lhe de suas propriedades básicas enquanto disciplina e conteúdo. Nosso estudo mostrou o quanto as obras de Carroll possuem uma forte vertente didática que pode se desdobrar nas mais variadas atividades de estudo e ensino para as aulas de matemática. Raciocínio lógico-matemático. 9 Abstract Notable mathematics’ teacher, Lewis Carroll, pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), made the mixture of mathematics with literature a ludic environment for learning that discipline. Author of Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and its sequel Alice Through The Looking Glass, he eventually created a real and complex universe which uses what we call the logic of the nonsense as an element to motivate the development of mathematical thinking of the reader, taking it as well, learn by establishing a link between the concrete (mathematics) and the imaginary (their universe). In order to investigate and discuss the educational potential of their works and state some elements that can contribute to a decentralized math education from the traditional method of following the models and decorate formulas, we visited his works based on the studies of archeology of knowledge (FOUCAULT, 2007), the rational thought and symbolic thinking (VERGANI, 2003) and about the importance of stories and narratives to the development of human cognition (FARIAS, 2006). Through a descriptive, analytical study, we used the literary construction and presented part of our study in form of a mathematical novel, to give the mathematical school a particular charm, without depriving it of its basics properties as discipline and content. Our study showed how the works of Carroll have a strong didactic element that can deploy in various activities of study and teaching for mathematics classes. Keywords: Lewis Carroll.     Alice in Wonderland Glossary of Terms for Madge Miller’s adaptation from Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll’s novella Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, on which Madge Miller’s play is based, begins not with Alice sitting on the grass with her sister, but with the following poem, which recalls the “golden afternoon” when Carroll first began telling the story of Alice’s adventures underground to the three Liddell sisters, Lorina (aged 13), Alice (aged 10), and Edith (aged 8). The date was Friday, July 4th, 1862. W.H. Auden once declared that July 4th, 1862 was “as memorable a day in the history of literature as it is in American history.”1 This quote and, indeed, much of the information in this glossary is culled from The Annotated Alice, a volume of Carroll’s work superbly annotated by Martin Gardner, from which I will be citing frequently. The poem which begins Alice’s Adventures reads as follows: All in the golden afternoon Full leisurely we glide; For both our oars, with little skill, By little arms are plied, While little hands make vain pretence Our wanderings to guide. Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour, Beneath such dreamy weather, To beg a tale of breath too weak To stir the tiniest feather! Yet what can one poor voice avail Against three tongues together?     Christ Church Library, Carroll Collection Digitised image notes and captions by Edward Wakeling Carroll Sketches C1-C6, C10-C14 Introductory Notes: Within a few years of publication, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland became a best- seller that has never been out of print. Dodgson was keen to exploit the market, and in February 1869 he began to suggest a cheaper version to his publisher. He wrote to Alexander Macmillan saying that “My feeling is that the present price puts the book entirely out of the reach of many thousands of children of the middle classes, who might, I think, enjoy it.” He went on to say “I should be much obliged if you would make a rough calculation whether you could (by printing on cheaper paper, but keeping to toned unless white is decidedly cheaper, by putting more into a page, limiting the pictures to 10 or 12 of the best, and printing these separately…having the edges sprinkled red instead of gilt, and the cover plain red, with no gilding on it except the title) sell the book for (say) half-a-crown, and yet make a profit if there were a good demand for it.” Nothing immediately came of this idea. However, some years later, Macmillan and Company came up with a more extensive plan. They were printing popular books in a series that sold for only sixpence a copy, and they were expecting to sell 150,000 copies of Tom Brown’s School Days, making a modest profit on the sales. Frederick Macmillan, Alexander Macmillan’s nephew, wrote to Dodgson on 10 February 1882 saying “We have been casting about for other books to follow it, and it has naturally occurred to us that Alice’s Adventures issued at such a price would be certain of a wide circulation.

The popular response to One More Millennium, The Story of Wheatley and Holton Park, the Wheatley Society Millennium Exhibitions of 2000 and 2003 and the 2004 research and playwriting on the Civil War make me think Wheatley (and Holton) history is still to be found, and that Vetelegans (the notional medieval Latin for “inhabitants of Wheatley”) are still quite interested in it. New drawings have emerged from the Bodleian, new evidence for the story of the Bromes and the Whorwoods who lived on the moated island in Holton Park, now Wheatley Park School, and the newly uncovered account of Cromwell, Fairfax and the besiegers of Oxford passing through Wheatley. A book should stimulate readers to go beyond where the book ends.

Lewis Carroll based much of his nonsense humour and curious themes in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass on his expertise in logic and mathematics. Years after the books were written, Alice, under the guidance of new authors, is experiencing new adventures in different regions of Scienceland, from Quantumland to Computerland. Situations, characters and concepts from Carroll’s books on Alice are often reused in different scientific fields to illustrate scientific phenomena. Alice has become an archetype placeholder name for experimentalists in physics and cryptology. Carroll’s books on Alice have been adopted by the scientific community and it seems that, although it is characteristic for science to keep changing, Alice’s adventures in Scienceland are here to stay.
