Die status van die Alice-verhale as tydlose, klassieke verhale word bevestig deur die verskeie vertalings en verwerkings daarvan wat reeds gedoen is en steeds onderneem word. In hierdie studie word ’n beskrywende ondersoek van André P. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Carroll se verhale onderneem om vas te stel of die vertalings vir huidige lesers steeds gepas is. Brink se Afrikaanse vertaling van Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is reeds in 1965 gepubliseer en die vertaling van Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. ’n Oorsig oor die vernaamste vertaalteoretiese bydraes sedert die tagtigerjare word eerstens gebied as gronding vir die bestudering en beskrywing van vertalings. Relevante terminologie, waaronder geskiktheid en aanvaarbaarheid, kom ook aan bod. Daar word veral klem gelê op die interaksie tussen die teoretiese bydraes, wat gesamentlik dien as ’n grondslag vir die gevolgtrekking wat gemaak word oor die gepastheid van die vertaling. Die oordeel oor die gepastheid, al dan nie, van die vertaling word gegrond op ’n toepassing waar die vertaling bestudeer word. Die vertaling word vanuit ’n vertaalteoretiese oogpunt op makro- sowel as mikrovlak bestudeer. Op makrovlak word daar onder andere verwys na die titel, voorblaaie, illustrasies, hoofstuktitels en die (on)sigbaarheid van die vertaler. Die bestudering van die vertaling op mikrovlak behels ’n ondersoek na Brink se hantering van vertaalprobleme wat in die betrokke vertaalsituasie ontstaan. Na aanleiding van die bestudering van die vertaling kan daar afleidings gemaak word oor die gepastheid daarvan vir huidige lesers en word ’n aanbeveling gemaak oor die moontlikheid van ’n hervertaling. ii Abstract Lewis Carroll’s classic children’s tale Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, as well as its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, have the reputation of being the most quoted and translated texts of all time, after the Bible and Shakespeare. The status of the Alice books as timeless classics is confirmed by the numerous translations and adaptations of the texts that have already been made and is still being made. In this study, a descriptive investigation of André P. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Carroll’s classic children’s books is undertaken in order to investigate whether the translation is still suitable for Afrikaans readers today. Brink’s Afrikaans translation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was published in 1965, and his translation of Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There in 1968. Firstly, an overview of the most important theoretical contributions to translation studies since the nineteen-eighties is given to provide a foundation for the investigation and description of translations. Relevant terminology, such as adequacy and acceptability, will be explained. Emphasis will especially be placed on the interaction between the theoretical contributions, which will serve as a basis for the conclusion drawn regarding the suitability of the translation. The conclusion will be based on an application where the translation will be investigated. The translation is studied from a theoretical point of view on macrostructural as well as microstructural level. In the macrostructural analysis, references to the title, cover pages, illustrations, chapter titles, and the (in)visibility of the translator will be made. The microstructural analysis comprises an investigation of how Brink dealt with translation problems that arose during the particular translation. As a result of the investigation of the translation, conclusions can be drawn regarding the suitability of the translation for current readers.     Teacher’s Introduction Educational Objectives The primary goal of these materials is the development of students’ appreciation of literature and the enrichment of their understanding of its historical context. With the exception of the vocabulary words themselves, the general vocabulary should be familiar to students working at the year six level and above. The Reading Comprehension Exercises encourage careful and critical reading by asking stu- dents both to recall details of the story and to pick out the main themes or ideas. Some ques- tions require students to make inferences and to draw conclusions about what they have read. The exercises also identify special vocabulary used in the book, offer practice in interpreting dif- ficult or idiomatic phrases, and help to prepare students for taking standardised objective tests. The Vocabulary Exercises introduce students to new words and to new forms of familiar words.

    Mad Hatter Day Was First Recognized As An Official Holiday In 1988 October 6 is a day set aside each year to bring out your silly side while celebrating National Mad Hatter Day. The fictional character, The Hatter (also known as The Mad Hatter) from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, is typically acting silly, and that is how the creators of this day decided on their theme of silliness for National Mad Hatter Day. Sir John Tenniel illustrated The Mad Hatter and all of Lewis Carroll’s colorful characters beginning in 1864. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865. The phrase “mad as a hatter” comes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries when haberdasheries used mercury nitrate. The exposure to this metal over time caused the tradesmen to develop symptoms making people believe they were mad. In 1986 some computer-folk in Boulder, CO celebrated a general day of silliness, inspired by the drawings of the Mad Hatter by John Tenniel in Alice In Wonderland. It was announced that year on computer networks, becoming more popular as people realized its value – some people did less damage by celebrating silliness than if they had done their jobs. In 1988 it was first recognized as an official holiday and received its first national press coverage. English illustrator John Tenniel depicted Hatter wearing a hat with 10/6 written on it. The 10/6 refers to the cost of a hat — 10 shillings and 6 pence, and later became the date and month to celebrate Mad Hatter Day.

    Alice in Wonderland Glossary of Terms for Madge Miller’s adaptation from Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll’s novella Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, on which Madge Miller’s play is based, begins not with Alice sitting on the grass with her sister, but with the following poem, which recalls the “golden afternoon” when Carroll first began telling the story of Alice’s adventures underground to the three Liddell sisters, Lorina (aged 13), Alice (aged 10), and Edith (aged 8). The date was Friday, July 4th, 1862. W.H. Auden once declared that July 4th, 1862 was “as memorable a day in the history of literature as it is in American history.”1 This quote and, indeed, much of the information in this glossary is culled from The Annotated Alice, a volume of Carroll’s work superbly annotated by Martin Gardner, from which I will be citing frequently. The poem which begins Alice’s Adventures reads as follows: All in the golden afternoon Full leisurely we glide; For both our oars, with little skill, By little arms are plied, While little hands make vain pretence Our wanderings to guide. Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour, Beneath such dreamy weather, To beg a tale of breath too weak To stir the tiniest feather! Yet what can one poor voice avail Against three tongues together? Imperious Prima flashes forth Her edict to “begin it”: In gentler tones Secunda hopes “There will be nonsense in it!” While Tertia interrupts the tale Not more than once a minute. Dodgson was keen to exploit the market, and in February 1869 he began to suggest a cheaper version to his publisher. He wrote to Alexander Macmillan saying that “My feeling is that the present price puts the book entirely out of the reach of many thousands of children of the middle classes, who might, I think, enjoy it.” He went on to say “I should be much obliged if you would make a rough calculation whether you could (by printing on cheaper paper, but keeping to toned unless white is decidedly cheaper, by putting more into a page, limiting the pictures to 10 or 12 of the best, and printing these separately…having the edges sprinkled red instead of gilt, and the cover plain red, with no gilding on it except the title) sell the book for (say) half-a-crown, and yet make a profit if there were a good demand for it.” Nothing immediately came of this idea. However, some years later, Macmillan and Company came up with a more extensive plan. They were printing popular books in a series that sold for only sixpence a copy, and they were expecting to sell 150,000 copies of Tom Brown’s School Days, making a modest profit on the sales. Frederick Macmillan, Alexander Macmillan’s nephew, wrote to Dodgson on 10 February 1882 saying “We have been casting about for other books to follow it, and it has naturally occurred to us that Alice’s Adventures issued at such a price would be certain of a wide circulation.

The Editor trusts that, now the Berkshire series has been commenced, it will be possible to issue two volumes annually; but to secure such progress both transcribers and subscribers are requisite. The important Register of the town of Wantage has been selected for the commencement of the series, and it will be seen that the entries in it are very numerous, filling indeed nearly the whole of the volume. The transcript has been prepared under the direction of Canon Ponsonby, Vicar of Wantage, by Mr. W. Pumfrey, of Wantage, to whom the Editor's thanks are due for the great care taken by him and for the valuable assistance rendered as it passed through the press.
