CVIH. (BERKSHIRE, VOL. I.) One hundred and fifty printed. : Berkshire Parish Registers. flDarriages. Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L. VOL. I. Hon&on Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., 124, Chancery Lane. 1908. PREFACE. The present volume is the first of a series which the Editor hopes may be continued until all the Parish Registers of Berkshire have been printed. The advantage of having our ancient parish registers thus rendered accessible to the student is obvious. Great progress has been made in the neighbouring counties: no less than fourteen volumes of Gloucestershire Registers, eleven of Hampshire and six of Wiltshire have already been issued. The Editor trusts that, now the Berkshire series has been commenced, it will be possible to issue two volumes annually; but to secure such progress both transcribers and subscribers are requisite. The important Register of the town of Wantage has been selected for the commencement of the series, and it will be seen that the entries in it are very numerous, filling indeed nearly the whole of the volume. The transcript has been prepared under the direction of Canon Ponsonby, Vicar of Wantage, by Mr. W. Pumfrey, of Wantage, to whom the Editor's thanks are due for the great care taken by him and for the valuable assistance rendered as it passed through the press. The Editor also has to gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the Rev. J. F. Williams who transcribed the West Woodhay marriages. 1379(545 It has been thought desirable, as in other volumes of the series, to modernise the spelling of christian and place-names, but the spelling of the surname is given in all cases exactly as in the original entry, which, though — abstracted in an abbreviated and uniform style, contains all information relating to age, parentage, vocation and place of abode, which is contained in the original. This volume, like others, in these series, is issued without an index. The Editor hopes that it will be feasible hereafter to issue a general index for the whole county, and thus avoid that great evil—an undue multiplicity of indexes. Moreover, by postponing index-making, we expedite the printing of the Registers themselves, a matter of no small moment when we remember the serious risks of fire, theft and forgery, not to mention those of natural decay and accidental loss, to which these valuable records are continually exposed. The following abbreviations are made use of: w.=widower or widow. p.=of the parish of. s.= spinster, single woman, or co.=in the county of. son. dioc.=in the diocese of. b.=bachelor or single man. /2'c.=marriage licence. d.=daughter. It may be well to remind the reader that these printed abstracts of the registers are not legal "evidence." For certificates application must be made to the local clergy in charge of the Registers, by whom they will be gladly supplied. It only remains to add that the Editor will gladly welcome further assistance in the way of transcribing Marriage Registers. Such volunteer help alone renders it possible to issue this series of the Parish Registers of Berkshire. 124, Chancery Lane, September, 1908. Contents. Parish. Years. Page. Ashbury Neighbourhood Development Plan 2018-2031 A report to Vale of White Horse District Council on the Ashbury Neighbourhood Development Plan Andrew Ashcroft Independent Examiner BA (Hons) MA, DMS, MRTPI Director – Andrew Ashcroft Planning Limited Executive Summary 1 I was appointed by Vale of White Horse District Council in February 2019 to carry out the independent examination of the Ashbury Neighbourhood Plan. 2 The examination was undertaken by written representations. I visited the neighbourhood plan area on 11 March 2019. 3 The Plan includes a range of policies and seeks to bring forward positive and sustainable development in the neighbourhood area. There is a very clear focus on safeguarding local character and designating local green spaces. It also includes policies to manage future residential growth. The Plan is very-well written and presented. It is also distinctive to the neighbourhood area. 4 The Plan has been significantly underpinned by community support and engagement. It is clear that all sections of the community have been actively engaged in its preparation. 5 Subject to a series of recommended modifications set out in this report I have concluded that the Ashbury Neighbourhood Plan meets all the necessary legal requirements and should proceed to referendum. 6 I recommend that the referendum should be held within the neighbourhood area. Andrew Ashcroft Independent Examiner 26 April 2019 1 1 Introduction 1.1 This report sets out the findings of the independent examination of the Ashbury Neighbourhood Plan 2018-2031 (the Plan). 1.2 The Plan has been submitted to Vale of White Horse District Council (VWHDC) by Ashbury Parish Council in its capacity as the qualifying body responsible for preparing the neighbourhood plan.

  • Admission Policies 2021/2022
Ashbury with Compton Beauchamp Church of England (Aided) Primary School Admissions 2021/2022 Policy Approved by: Full Governing Board Date: 3rd December 2019 Last Reviewed: November 2018 Next Review Due By: December 2020 ( Last Full Consultation 2014) Oxfordshire County Council Oxford Diocesan Board of Education OXFORD DIOCESAN BOARD OF EDUCATION OXFORDSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ADMISSION POLICY FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2021/22 SCHOOL SIZE Ashbury School is a small rural primary school. The admissions number for the academic year 2021-2022 is 15 children with the same number of places allocated to other year groups. Whilst this is first and foremost a Church of England Aided Primary School, the Governors warmly welcome all children, including children of other faiths and no faith, to the school. Traditionally children have been drawn from the parishes of Ashbury and Compton Beauchamp, which include Knighton, Odstone, Idstone and Kingstone Winslow. The Christian ethos of the school, the facilities, the small teaching groups, the care of children with special needs and the high standards have attracted children from other areas. With the passing of recent legislation parents are free to opt for their choice of school if there is space available. In such cases it is the Head Teacher's and the Governors' wish that parents should inform their nearest school of their decision to send their child to Ashbury School. VOLUNTARY AIDED STATUS The law places responsibility for admission arrangements with the school Governors of Ashbury School. The Governors are required to consult with the Oxford Diocesan Board of Education and the Oxfordshire County Council where there are proposed material changes to the policy.

  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.
