The present volume is the first of a series which the Editor hopes may be continued until all the Parish Registers of Berkshire have been printed. The advantage of having our ancient parish registers thus rendered accessible to the student is obvious. Great progress has been made in the neighbouring counties: no less than fourteen volumes of Gloucestershire Registers, eleven of Hampshire and six of Wiltshire have already been issued. The Editor trusts that, now the Berkshire series has been commenced, it will be possible to issue two volumes annually; but to secure such progress both transcribers and subscribers are requisite. The important Register of the town of Wantage has been selected for the commencement of the series, and it will be seen that the entries in it are very numerous, filling indeed nearly the whole of the volume. The transcript has been prepared under the direction of Canon Ponsonby, Vicar of Wantage, by Mr. W. Pumfrey, of Wantage, to whom the Editor's thanks are due for the great care taken by him and for the valuable assistance rendered as it passed through the press. The Editor also has to gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the Rev. J. F. Williams who transcribed the West Woodhay marriages. 1379(545 It has been thought desirable, as in other volumes of the series, to modernise the spelling of christian and place-names, but the spelling of the surname is given in all cases exactly as in the original entry, which, though — abstracted in an abbreviated and uniform style, contains all information relating to age, parentage, vocation and place of abode, which is contained in the original. This volume, like others, in these series, is issued without an index. The Editor hopes that it will be feasible hereafter to issue a general index for the whole county, and thus avoid that great evil—an undue multiplicity of indexes. Moreover, by postponing index-making, we expedite the printing of the Registers themselves, a matter of no small moment when we remember the serious risks of fire, theft and forgery, not to mention those of natural decay and accidental loss, to which these valuable records are continually exposed. The following abbreviations are made use of: w.=widower or widow. p.=of the parish of. s.= spinster, single woman, or co.=in the county of. son. dioc.=in the diocese of. b.=bachelor or single man. /2'c.=marriage licence. d.=daughter. It may be well to remind the reader that these printed abstracts of the registers are not legal "evidence." For certificates application must be made to the local clergy in charge of the Registers, by whom they will be gladly supplied. It only remains to add that the Editor will gladly welcome further assistance in the way of transcribing Marriage Registers. Note.—According to a statement in a "Terrier and Inventory" signed by the Vicar, the Churchwardens, and others, at the Easter Vestry, 1897, a copy of which was forwarded to the Dean and Chapter of Windsor, the Schedule of the Wantage Parish Registers was then as follows : Twenty Parish Registers ; the Baptisms dating from 5 Jan. and the Burials from 1540 ; the Marriages from 23 Oct. 1538 ; 14 Jan. 1542.
