  • HUNG LIU: OFFERINGS January 23-March 17, 2013
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: December 12, 2012 Maysoun Wazwaz Mills College Art Museum, Program Manager 510.430.3340 or [email protected] Mills College Art Museum Announces HUNG LIU: OFFERINGS January 23-March 17, 2013 Oakland, CA—December 12, 2012. The Mills College Art Museum is pleased to present Hung Liu: Offerings a rare opportunity to experience two of the Oakland-based artist’s most significant large- scale installations: Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain) (1994) and Tai Cang—Great Granary (2008). Hung Liu: Offerings will be on view from January 23 through March 17, 2013. The opening reception takes place on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 from 6:00–8:00 pm and free shuttle service will be provided from the MacArthur Bart station during the opening. Recognized as America's most important Chinese artist, Hung Liu’s installations have played a central role in her work throughout her career. In Jiu Jin Shan (Old Gold Mountain), over two hundred thousand fortune cookies create a symbolic gold mountain that engulfs a crossroads of railroad tracks running beneath. The junction where the tracks meet serves as both a crossroads and 1 terminus, a visual metaphor of the cultural intersection of East and West. Liu references not only the history of the Chinese laborers who built the railroads to support the West Coast Gold Rush, but also the hope shared among these migrant workers that they could find material prosperity in the new world. The Mills College Art Museum is excited to be the first venue outside of China to present Tai Cang— Great Granary.

Although more muted than in some of the preceding ten, Nature Girl’s barely concealed subtext expresses Hiaasen’s outraged concern over the diminishing natural environment in his home state. Hiaasen’s chosen form, the popular crime novel, has enabled him to reach a wide audience with his ecological message. Working within the generic confines of the crime novel, however, produces a number of intriguing challenges to Hiaasen’s radical tendencies.

  • A Counter-Curriculum for the Pop Culture Classroom
Acad. Quest. (2010) 23:420–434 DOI 10.1007/s12129-010-9196-5 POPULAR CULTURE AND THE ACADEMY A Counter-Curriculum for the Pop Culture Classroom Thomas F. Bertonneau Published online: 13 October 2010 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010 Popular culture courses first appeared in the college and university curriculum in social science and humanities departments in the late 1950s in response to the Frankfurt School critique of the postwar bourgeois order. The Frankfurt School critics, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, Hannah Arendt, Max Horkheimer, and Theodor W. Adorno, were in turn responding to Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and Walter Benjamin. As a discipline, “popular culture studies” (shortened in recent years to “culture studies”) began as a disestablishmentarian enterprise pursued by activist intellectuals of left-liberal disposition. The names of Richard Hoggart and Raymond Williams are important as successors to the Frankfurt School figures and as contemporary cue-givers of the discipline. The scholar-radicals typically construed nineteenth-century civic custom—and even more so, twentieth-century bourgeois culture—as ideology, using the term in its Marxist sense as the expression of a false and freedom-limiting conscious- ness that impedes progress. In English departments and other departments where the study of literature was in order, interest in genre fiction was a going concern, with dedicated courses by the mid-1970s at the latest. So it was that, when I resumed matriculation toward my baccalaureate in the summer of 1983 at UCLA, I enrolled in an English department offering taught by the then young Raymond Paredes (now a dean) dedicated to the American Popular Novel Since World War Two, or some similar rubric.

The Pennsylvania State University The Graduate School College of the Liberal Arts DAUGHTERS READING AND RESPONDING TO AFRICAN AMERICAN YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE: THE UMOJA BOOK CLUB A Dissertation in English by Melvette Melvin Davis © 2009 Melvette Melvin Davis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2009 The dissertation of Melvette Melvin Davis was reviewed and approved* by the following: Keith Gilyard Distinguished Professor of English Dissertation Advisor Chair of Committee Linda Selzer Assistant Professor of English Julia Kasdorf Associate Professor of English and Women’s Studies Jeanine Staples Assistant Professor of Education Robert Edwards Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature Director of Graduate Studies, Department of English *Signatures are on file in the Graduate School. ii ABSTRACT This dissertation details efforts undertaken by the researcher to address a group of African American adolescent girls’ need for positive role models and Black female-centered spaces where discussions of issues such as Black female identity, voice, and relationships could take place. During the 2005-2006 school year, I facilitated a book club with ninth and tenth grade girls participating in the Umoja Youth Empowerment Program. This book club provided an opportunity for teen girls to read and discuss with peers and adult mentors issues in young adult texts written by African American female authors. This book club aimed to examine how African American female readers discussed African American young adult literature (AAYAL) in an out-of-school context. In Chapter One, I outline the theoretical framework that undergirds this study. It is largely informed by feminist and Black feminist/womanist theories that offer a way to discuss social, personal, cultural, and literacy issues concerning African American adolescent girls and women.

  • Introduction 1
INTRODUCTION The novel “Northern Lights” by Philip Pullman is the first book of the trilogy “His Dark Materials”, published in 1995. It is a fantasy novel with a story that takes place in our parallel universe. The novel won the Carnegie Medal (a literary award for outstanding books for children and young adults) one year after it was published. It was adopted into a Hollywood feature film in 2007 under the title “Golden Compass” along with an accompanying video game. Both the trilogy and the film were faced with controversy because some critics claim they are sending a negative image of religion. I have chosen this book for my paperwork because I have already read it in Croatian and really enjoyed the story of a universe where every human has its own “daemon” or animal companion. With that companion you are never alone; you always have someone to talk to and someone that will always help you when you find yourself in difficult situations. In that way this universe, where we are surrounded with hundreds of people every day and yet we feel alone, would seem much more fulfilled. 1 1. PHILIP PULLMAN Philip Pullman is an English writer born in Norwich, England on 19th of October, 1946. His father, a Royal Airforce Pilot, was killed in a plane crash when he was seven years old. When his mother remarried they moved to Australia where he discovered the art of comic books. From 1957 he was educated in Wales and spent time with his grandfather in Norfolk. During that time he discovered John Milton’s epic poem “Paradise Lost” which became a great influence for his trilogy “His Dark Materials”.
