Essi Tommila CREATING A CHILDREN’S GAMIFIED PICTURE BOOK Bachelor’s thesis Game Design 2018 Author Degree Time Essi Tommila Bachelor of Culture April 2018 and Arts Title 41 pages Creating a children’s gamified picture book 2 pages of appendices Commissioned by - Supervisor Marko Siitonen Sarah-Jane Leavey Abstract This thesis was based on the game The Little Cat and The Rainbow Egg which is an interactive gamified storybook for children from the ages of 5 to 10. The game was published on Google Play and can be played with a tablet or a phone. The purpose of this thesis project was to work as a showcase of the idea of creating a well- functioning picture book for children with gamified elements that enhance the immersion of storytelling. The goal was to make a professional and functional product with emphasis on the visual style. The game was produced by three people, programming and music were done by outside partners, the author was working as a lead designer and artist. The design and idea of the product is based on theoretical backgrounds that are presented in the first part of the thesis. This thesis report answers to the questions how to gamify a storybook and how to illustrate and add interactive elements to a story so that it works as a children’s medium. The thesis report focuses on the process of making the project from the design standpoint and the main topics include interactive illustration, visual directing, children’s illustration, and publishing of the product. Other notable things the report talks about are storyboarding, art, stylizing of illustrations and technical development such as programming, animation and music. -
Christa Mcauliffe, Teacher Astronaut
0106C Christa McAuliffe 10/26/05 10:43 PM Page 40 Christa McAuliffe, Teacher Astronaut S ONE OF her training exercises in becoming the first teacher astronaut, A Christa McAuliffe had to curl up inside a 36-inch-diameter nylon ball. When she was zipped up, she found herself in total darkness. She didn’t know when she’d be let out. Christa wore electrodes and transmitters to see how she would react to being closed in, since on the space shuttle she’d have to share a living space that measured only 10 by 13 feet (the size of her kitchen) with six people, and she and the other astronauts would eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, work, and relax there; it was no place for someone with claustrophobia. Christa thought she would start yelling and try to claw her way out, but she lay back, folded her arms across her stomach, and imagined herself floating in space. As Christa McAuliffe a result, the 15 minutes she spent inside the nylon ball were very peaceful. At the end of the exercise, she asked if she could take the ball home. “When things start to get crazy, I can just set the timer and tell the kids, ‘O.K., Mom’s going into the sphere now.’” Christa, a high-school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, first heard about the teacher astronaut program on the radio while driving with her husband, Steve. The smile that lit Christa’s face told Steve she was interested. “Go for it,” he said. When she put off filling out the Women astronauts stand with the Personal Rescue Enclosure (the rescue ball). -

Nig-Nog and Other Humorous Stories
Nig-Nog and Other Humorous Stories by Edgar Wallace Nig-Nog And Other Humorous Stories 1. "NIG NOG!" This story is about a matter which, in itself, is ancient history. It is only told now because Mr. Cymbeline Smith (his real name is something which is almost as outrageous) has placed himself under a fifty-thousand dollar bond that he will not "associate in any way whatsoever" his name or his preparation with those which occur in this story, "providing a genteel account of the aforesaid affair be put into writing by a newspaper man." This is that genteel account. Cymbeline Smith is an American citizen who made a deal of money in the traveling circus business before he took up the serious study of medicines. It had been an asset of his that he might have stood as a model for any artist who desired to draw Uncle Sam. He had a long, somewhat dissatisfied face, a fringe of amber and gray whisker at his chin, he always wore a top hat of antique shape and trousers which were strapped under Wellington boots. In the circus days he affected a blue cut-away swallowtail and a high stock, but these he abandoned when he gave his mind and money to medical science, and produced in conjunction with a drummer (who afterwards drank himself to death) the preparation which is known commercially as "Nig-Nog!" I have little space to dilate upon the pharmaceutical values of "Nig-Nog!" You have read the full page and the double page ads., and you know (or you disbelieve) that "Nig-Nog!" cures all nervous ailments, builds up nerve forces, clears the dazed and dopey brain, and restores to its vie—, to its grateful and delighted purchaser that roseate outlook upon life, that balance of reason, that clarity of vision which the brainworker, the cigarette-fiend, and the chronic pessimist cannot enjoy.
