0106C Christa McAuliffe 10/26/05 10:43 PM Page 40 Christa McAuliffe, Teacher Astronaut S ONE OF her training exercises in becoming the first teacher astronaut, A Christa McAuliffe had to curl up inside a 36-inch-diameter nylon ball. When she was zipped up, she found herself in total darkness. She didn’t know when she’d be let out. Christa wore electrodes and transmitters to see how she would react to being closed in, since on the space shuttle she’d have to share a living space that measured only 10 by 13 feet (the size of her kitchen) with six people, and she and the other astronauts would eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, work, and relax there; it was no place for someone with claustrophobia. Christa thought she would start yelling and try to claw her way out, but she lay back, folded her arms across her stomach, and imagined herself floating in space. As Christa McAuliffe a result, the 15 minutes she spent inside the nylon ball were very peaceful. At the end of the exercise, she asked if she could take the ball home. “When things start to get crazy, I can just set the timer and tell the kids, ‘O.K., Mom’s going into the sphere now.’” Christa, a high-school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, first heard about the teacher astronaut program on the radio while driving with her husband, Steve. The smile that lit Christa’s face told Steve she was interested. “Go for it,” he said. When she put off filling out the Women astronauts stand with the Personal Rescue Enclosure (the rescue ball).

NASA Reflects America’s Changing Opportunities; Social, NASA Impacts US Culture Education: Inspiring Cultural, and Students as Only NASA Can Educational Legacies Social, Cultural, and Educational Legacies 459 NASA Reflects The Space Shuttle, which began flying in 1981 and ushered in an entirely new human spaceflight program, was a watershed for cultural diversity America’s within NASA and had substantial cultural impact outside the realm of Changing spaceflight. In the 1950s and 1960s, opportunities for American women and minorities were limited as they were often segregated into pink Opportunities; collar and menial jobs. NASA’s female and minority employees faced NASA Impacts similar obstacles. The Space Shuttle Program opened up opportunities US Culture for these groups—opportunities that did not exist during Projects Mercury and Gemini or the Apollo and Skylab Programs. NASA’s transformation was a direct consequence of a convergence of events Jennifer Ross-Nazzal Shannon Lucid that happened in the 1960s and 1970s and continued through the Helen Lane following 3 decades. These included: public policy changes instituted on the national level; the development of a spacecraft whose physical capabilities departed radically from the capsule concept; and an increase in the number of women and minorities holding degrees in the fields of science and engineering, making them attractive candidates for the space agency’s workforce. Over the course of the program, the agency’s demographics reflected this transformation: women and minorities were incorporated into the Astronaut Corps and other prominent technical and administrative positions. The impact of NASA’s longest-running program extends beyond these dramatic changes.

  • Clipper Ships: the Appeal of Sail by Garry Victor Hill
1 Clipper Ships: The Appeal of Sail by Garry Victor Hill Plate 1 The Ariel. By Jack Spurling (1870-1933) Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=14917880 The painting above captures exactly the breathtaking appeal of clipper ships. The azure sky with slight traces of pure white from thin clouds and the matching white foam and white sails with a touch of pale blue contrast with the dark, but vibrant blue waves. The ship, Ariel does not seem to plough through the waves so much as conquer them through 2 sleek cuts, while her billowing sails soar like clouds. The scene gives a feeling of optimism, even exuberance: clippers often did that. They were loved by owners, passengers and crews, by those who depicted them, artists, photographers and writers, even tattooists and their customers; everybody had obvious reasons. They epitomise the age of sail, but their peak years only came to two decades, 1849 to 1869. The years of their emergence and decline came to several decades. Their essential hull design was first used in Chesapeake Bay late in the eighteenth century, but these were smaller ships, closer to schooners than the later larger great clippers of the late 1830s and after. In both their sleek hull design, their narrow cutting bow, the outlay of their sails and their size they had much in common with schooners. There were strong and obvious differences: schooners were much smaller and usually had only two masts which were not even half the height of those on clippers. Schooner sails were smaller and fewer in number, and were positioned parallel to the hull, not crossways to it, as on clippers These early clippers would take part in military operations in the American Revolution and the War of 1812, sometimes as privateers, more often as smugglers and messengers.1 In peacetime they would be involved in Chesapeake trade and transportation.
