Although more muted than in some of the preceding ten, Nature Girl’s barely concealed subtext expresses Hiaasen’s outraged concern over the diminishing natural environment in his home state. Hiaasen’s chosen form, the popular crime novel, has enabled him to reach a wide audience with his ecological message. Working within the generic confines of the crime novel, however, produces a number of intriguing challenges to Hiaasen’s radical tendencies.

The next is a suitcase containing the almost-legless body of the local chamber of commerce president found floating in a canal...The locals... Review: This is a great read, perhaps less speckled with Hiaasens brilliant humor than his other works, but with a far more poignant message. To say more would give away the story. Having read all his novels at least twice, I think this one may contain the most important statement. Very highly recommended.... Excerpted from Godefroy Desrosiers-Lauzon, Florida’s Snowbirds: Spectacle, Mobility, and Community since 1945 (Montreal: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2011). CHAPTER 4 FROM EDEN TO BABEL Populous, rapidly-growing Florida was more like Babel than Eden. Speedy growth has meant that transplanted migrants have been entrusted with the future of the state. Everybody in Florida is from someplace else, as the saying goes, making the Sunshine State a caricature of the American Babylon. The consequent anomie, social fragmentation, and loss of community, and the accompanying struggle to build a sense of belonging out of this congregation of unattached individuals, make Florida an interesting object for social inquiry, in a modern context where fears abound that community loss is the tradeoff for material “progress.” Florida's extreme fragmentation may provide insights into our common future. Will we all be strangers, the world a hotel? Or is there hope for reconnection as we alight in one community after another before building our final nest in a snowbird haven like Florida? This chapter and the next evaluate Florida community-making through the presence of snowbirds and retired migrants. First, chapter 4 looks at snowbirds from the standpoint of the host community. How did its members react to social fragmentation? Specifically, how did they react to one of the most fragmenting aspects of life in Florida – the tourist and snowbird presence? Although Florida ranks as one of the most anomic states, the reaction of Floridians to their leisurely invaders will indicate to what extent the longing for community remains strong in late modern conditions, and will show Floridians’ evolving thinking about such problems.

32 • Articles • Absurdist Narratives in the Sunshine State: Comic, Criminal, Folkloric, and Fantastic Escapades in the Swamps and Suburbs of Florida JASON MARC HARRIS Florida Institute of Technology Abstract: Recent Florida fiction, such as Swamplandia! by Karen Russell, Sick Puppy by Carl Hiassen, and Triggerfish Twist by Tim Dorsey, emphasize the absurdity, liminality, and criminality of the state. By utilizing folkloric motifs, genres, and rhetoric—and employing simulations of traditional narratives—these popular novels explore and exploit the national perception of Florida’s status as the “weirdest state.” Harnessing the mode of the comically fantastic, each narrative reconfigures Floridian marginality by presenting the borders of criminal identity and the manifestations of social deviance as essential features at the center of this chaotic peninsula’s culture. Disordering narrative realism, these texts reveal psychological insights and highlight the uses of nonsense for storytelling. Fertile and Fractured Identity: Florida Folklore on the Margins Storytelling in an oral context is understood by folklorists to be a manifestation of both individual and communal identity. The assertion of identity is also part of literary compositions, and the inclusion of folklore is sometimes part of literary depictions of the development of characters’ identity: “writers frequently and more or less self-consciously have adapted and incorporated the forms and content of folklore in creating literary works […]” (de Caro and Jordan 2004, 5). Fiction can also include simulated folkloric content to provide the impression of a depth of tradition in which characters are immersed: a contrived matrix of communal meaning in which characters struggle to negotiate their individuality in Vol.

  • By Carl Hiaasen About the Book…
Hoot By Carl Hiaasen About the Book… In Hoot, Roy, who is new to his small Florida community, becomes involved in another boy's attempt to save a colony of burrowing owls from a proposed construction site. Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and–here’s the odd part–wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy’s trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails. Hoot, which was Hiaasen’s first novel for young adults, was the recipient of numerous awards, including the prestigious Newbery Award. The movie “Hoot” was released in 2006. About the Author… Carl Hiaasen was born in Plantation, Florida on March 12, 1953. He attended Emory University and graduated from the University of Florida in 1974 with a journalism degree. He worked as a newspaper reporter for the Cocoa Today and later he moved to the Miami Herald, where he still works today as a columnist. He has always maintained a focus on environmental issues and the preservation of nature. In the 80s he began writing novels, but he has been writing about Florida since his father gave him a typewriter at age six.
