DURRELL BOWMAN Given Canada’s relatively small population (twenty-one million in 1969, thirty-four million in 2009), many—but certainly not all—of the nation’s more ambitious musicians have pursued at least some of their career activities in the US and other foreign parts. Rush mainly demonstrates “Canadianness” by combining such British and American influences as progressive rock, hard rock, and indi- vidualism. However, the band has also included more specifically Canadian references across its long career. CanCon The Canadian government implemented specific content—or “CanCon”—regulations in 1971, and broadcasters were then required to include certain percentages of Canadian material. For music, at least two of a song recording’s four main categories of Music, Artist, Production, and Lyrics (“M-A-P-L”) must be “Canadian” according to citizenship or location. The interpretation of this changed after 1991, due to a “scandal” involving Bryan Adams failing to qualify as Canadian because of co-writing certain songs, such as “(Everything I Do) I Do it For You” ( Waking up the Neighbours and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , both 1991), with such non-Canadians as Mutt Lange and Michael Kamen. (Spelling the word “neighbours” in the Canadian way apparently didn’t help.) The outcome is that even though Shania Twain similarly co- wrote the songs on Come on Over (1997) with her then-husband Mutt Lange and did not record any of this music in Canada, her album and its songs by that point qualified as Canadian.

Their first gig experiences were in workingmen's clubs, before they graduated to playing major northern club dates. The band made their vinyl debut last year on Redball Records with the EP '100 MPH', which quickly sold out its limited pressing of 2000 Thls record Is now a genuine collectors' Item with copies changing hands for considerable sums. They are now considering releasing '100 MPH' for their own Castle Records label, due to public demand. Their follow-up single 'If I Were King' has Just been put out on Castle Records, and this has almost sold 2000 (just on orders alone. Vardis are presently doing a promotional UK lour for the single. although, to date no London gigs have been finalised.

Reviewed by: Allyson Rogers, McGill University 1 Canadian Music and American Culture: Get Away From Me is a collection of essays that aims to explore the ways in which a selection of successful Anglo-Canadian pop artists grapple with Canadian identity in relation to the powerful influence of American culture and cultural industries. The book is the most recent title in Palgrave- MacMillan’s Pop Music, Culture, and Identity series, a collection that offers perspectives on pop music from scholars outside the field of musicology. The contributors to this volume are all literary scholars who presented their work at a 2011 symposium hosted by Sophia University’s Institute of American and Canadian Studies in Tokyo. In her introduction, editor Tristanne Connolly explains that the essays are written from a fan perspective informed by literary training. “Indeed we are all writing about music we love,” she writes (p. 16). If personal taste and experience are prime motivators for these essays, this may partly account for the book’s limited scope, and the extent to which it focuses squarely on the music of white, predominantly male, Anglo-Canadian artists from the 1960s to the present. We've been BO:j rehearsing for weeks now, relearning the old and new songs, and it's coming along. As usual in a Rush show, we'll be playing a handful of songs from the newest album, and a good variety of older stuff - some 'standards' (seems funny to think of them that way), as well as some unexpected reappearances. When we began putting togethe r the show, things went slowly at first, learning one song at a time, but now we are able to play the whole show in one go, so we know we're going to be all right. That old show-biz maxim: "All right on the night." As always, there was a lo t of work involved in preparing for a new lour, bul especially lhis one; we were detennined not to make it a continuation of previous tours, but a whole new thing: the firs t Rush tour of the '90s. So we had a lo t to think about, in the music and presentation of the show, but those around us have been working even harder, booking the tour, hotel and travel arrangements, organizing technical requirements with the arenas, and - a job which becomes increasingly more complex and critical - preparing our equipment.
