The World Stats (WSC) Run 2019 took place yesterday with over 7,000 participants from 46 countries who ran various distances (5KM, 10KM and 21KM) in the name of creating awareness of the ISI WSC 2019.

In an effort to promote better understanding of the role of statistics in a nation’s development amongst the public, infographics of statistics (FunSTATStic) were displayed along the scenic route.

The WSC Run 2019 was jointly organised by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and the Central Bank of Malaysia (BNM). In conjunction with the 70th anniversary of DOSM, runners aged 70 and above were also awarded special recognition for their participation WORLD STATS (WSC) RUN 2019 in the run.

The launch of the much anticipated ISI WSC 2019 was officiated by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad, in a culturally rich Opening Ceremony.

It is Malaysia’s first time hosting this prestigious international event since the first ISI WSC was held 132 years ago and it is an honour for the nation to be at the centre of the convergence of the global statistics community. The ceremony showcased thought-provoking speeches, dazzling traditional performances and the debut of the ISI WSC 2019 theme song “Statistics Bloom in Harmony”, performed by Malaysian songbird, Adibah Noor.

The Welcome Reception was held following the Opening Ceremony to warmly welcome delegates from over 130 countries around the world.

In keeping with the ISI WSC 2019 theme “Come, Connect, Create”, the reception provided delegates the perfect opportunity to connect ideas, development, interests and people.

Apart from building camaraderie with their peers, delegates had a fun time trying their hand at traditional Malaysian arts and crafts like batik painting, wood carving, songket weaving, pewter smithing and Chinese WELCOME RECEPTION calligraphy.

The Local Programme Committee (LPC) and Scientific Programme Committee (SPC) worked closely to build the core scientific programme of the ISI WSC 2019, which involved reviewing and selecting from submissions for the scientific programme. While the SPC is responsible for developing the Invited Paper Sessions (IPS), the LPC prepares the Special Topics Sessions (STS) and Contributed Paper/Poster Sessions (CPS) in coordination with the SPC.

Together with the SPC, the LPC oversees the congress’ call for the submission of the STS proposals and CPS papers. The LPC and the SPC take responsibility for the peer review process of these submissions, and most importantly crafting the congress schedule in order to ensure a broad level of participation. The LPC is led by Chairperson, Rozita Talha along with Co-Chair, Ibrahim Mohamed; Vice Chair I, Siti Haslinda Mohd Din and Vice-Chair II, Daniel Chin Shen Li. It is also supported by a membership panel comprising of expertise from the Department of Statistics Malaysia, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysia Institute of Statistics.
