Our purposes The purpose of this event was to raise cultural awareness as well as to share the Malaysian culture with the community of the university and around Iowa City. Our aim Our aim is to foster the relationship among the Malaysians in the University of Iowa, and also to develop the leadership and interpersonal skills within ourselves. Our strategy We decided to present something different than the Malaysian Night we did last year. Therefore, the executive boards came up with an idea to showcase our members’ talents through a staged play, in which we have never done before. The staged play was called as ‘Kampung Boy.’ Malaysian Student Society at the University of Iowa !4 Event Overview ‘Kampung Boy’ was a staged play that depicted about a Malaysian student who went back to his hometown with an American friend during the summer break. This play showed how the American friend learned about a variety of Malaysian cultures through Malay wedding, Chinese New Year, ‘Mamak’ experience, and the journey to Borneo. Four dance performances have been performed alongside the play. Around 270 guests have attended to this event (most of them were students of the University of Iowa and families who live around Iowa City and Coralville). They were served with traditional Malaysian food such as Karipap (Curry Puff), Roti Jala (yellow pancake) served with potato curry, and Kek Batik (chocolate cake). There was also an interactive exhibition that displayed an extensive Malaysian cultures during and event. Exhibition For exhibition, our plan was to give detail explanation to the audience about what they will see on stage. So, we divided the stations into 5 which were Malay wedding, Chinese New Year, “Mamak”, Sabah & Sarawak, and States of Malaysia. This interaction exhibition was handled by our Malaysian student volunteers, Nadzreen, Sharif, Leonard and Wei Hong. Malay wedding section focused on the wedding process. Therefore, we gave the audience explanation and we showed them pictures of the solemnization ceremony, “batal air sembahyang” ceremony, “pelamin”, “kompang” performance, “tepuk tepung tawar” ritual, “bersanding” ceremony, “hantaran” and the concept of “rewang”. Chinese New Year section gave the audience an insight on how Chinese New Year id celebrated in Malaysia and what the Chinese normally do during this festival. So, we prepared a few pictures of “changshan”, “ang pao”, “yee sang”, lion dance, “cheongsam” and firecracker. For “Mamak” section, we have pictures of nasi lemak, teh tarik, scenery in “mamak” during football game, roti canai and nasi kandar. In this section, we planned to introduce some Malaysian food to the audience and also explaining the importance of “mamak” restaurants in the Malaysian culture. Sabah & Sarawak section focuses more on the unique culture and beautiful places in Sabah and Sarawak. We prepared pictures of Mount Kinabalu, Rafflesia, Rajang river, Mulu mountain and longhouses. For States of Malaysia, we used the materials provided by Tourism Malaysia and showed the audience popular places and food or games that each state is known for. Malaysian Student Society at the University of Iowa !10 vi. Food and drinks During Malaysian Night, we ordered food and drinks from the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). The reason we choose IMU is because we have experience working with them on the same event last year and we received positive feedbacks from the audience saying that the food was good. So, we decided to cooperate with IMU for this year’s event too. The cooking process has involved our Malaysian student volunteers working in the IMU kitchen alongside the chefs to ensure the authentic taste of the food. The menus were roti jala, potato curry, veggie curry puff, fudge cake and water.
