This text explores the military and techno-scientific legacies at the birth of modern computing, and charts attempts by artists of the subsequent two decades to decouple these tools from their destructive origins. Using this history as a basis, the author then describes a media archaeological, real time performance system using audio synthesis and vector graphics display techniques to investigate direct, synesthetic relationships between sound and image. Key to this system, realized in the Pure Data programming environment, is a didactic, open source approach which encourages reuse and modification by other artists within the experimental audiovisual arts community. Delia Derbyshire Sound and Music For The BBC Radiophonic Workshop, 1962-1973 Teresa Winter PhD University of York Music June 2015 2 Abstract This thesis explores the electronic music and sound created by Delia Derbyshire in the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop between 1962 and 1973. After her resignation from the BBC in the early 1970s, the scope and breadth of her musical work there became obscured, and so this research is primarily presented as an open-ended enquiry into that work. During the course of my enquiries, I found a much wider variety of music than the popular perception of Derbyshire suggests: it ranged from theme tunes to children’s television programmes to concrete poetry to intricate experimental soundscapes of synthesis. While her most famous work, the theme to the science fiction television programme Doctor Who (1963) has been discussed many times, because of the popularity of the show, most of the pieces here have not previously received detailed attention. Some are not widely available at all and so are practically unknown and unexplored. Despite being the first institutional electronic music studio in Britain, the Workshop’s role in broadcasting, rather than autonomous music, has resulted in it being overlooked in historical accounts of electronic music, and very little research has been undertaken to discover more about the contents of its extensive archived back catalogue. Conversely, largely because of her role in the creation of its most recognised work, the previously mentioned Doctor Who theme tune, Derbyshire is often positioned as a pioneer in the medium for bringing electronic music to a large audience. -

Gene Radzik: We’re located in San Francisco, California at the mixing studios of Dolby Laboratories with Tom [Thomas Elroy] Oberheim. Tom, thank you for granting this interview. For this oral history, I’d like to begin by capturing your back history. Would you mind telling us when and where you were born, and how audio entered your life? Tom Oberheim: I was born in Manhattan, Kansas— home of Kansas State University. Although it was Kansas State College when I was there. I was born in that town and raised— and went to school there and went right on to the Kansas State. In 1956 I got the bug to leave town for a while and met some people in Wichita and moved to California and arrived in California in July of ’56 with $10 in my pocket and a broken down car and that’s where I started. The first few months I just worked at a— at an aircraft company that needed somebody in their dark room because I had worked in a camera shop when I was in high school. -

Introduction Electronic Dance Music (EDM) culture today is often times associated with top mainstream DJs and producers such as Deadmau5, Daft Punk, Calvin Harris, and David Guetta. These are artists who have established their career around DJing and/or producing electronic music albums or remixes and have gone on to headline world-renowned music festivals such as Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, and Coachella. The problem is that the term “DJ” can be mistakenly used interchangeably between someone who mixes between pre-recorded pieces of music at a venue with a set of turntables and a mixer and an artist who manipulates or creates music or audio live using a combination of computers, hardware, and/or controllers.
