The Media World: A New Collaboration Was Born MeCCSA and AMPE Joint Annual Conference. 5- 7 January 2005, University of Lincoln A report by Serena Formica, University of Nottingham, UK There was much anticipation and expectation leading up to the 2005 MeCCSA conference at the University of Lincoln. This was due to the event being the first joint MeCCSA (Media, Communications and Cultural Studies Association) and AMPE (Association of Media Practice Educators) conference. The purpose of this union was to highlight the common features of both organisations, such as interest in media, Cultural Studies, pedagogy -- all of them reflected in the numerous panels throughout the three-day meeting. Plenary sessions interspersed the many panels, the first of which was presented by Ursula Maier-Rabler (Director of the Centre for Advanced Studies and Research in Information and Communication Technologies and Society, University of Salzburg), who presented a paper entitled "Why do ICTs Matter? The Cultural-Social Milieu as Invisible Underpinning of New Information and Communication Technologies". Dr. Maier-Rabler highlighted the increasing importance of ICTs, considered as a Digital Network, characterised by its universality and non-linearity of contents. As Paul Virilio pointed out, ICTs are permeated by a constant acceleration, which emphasises its element of 'unfinishedness'. The cultural milieu surrounding ICTs was presented as divided into four major social-geographical areas: Social- conservative, Social-democratic, Protestant-liberal and Liberal-conservative. Maier-Rabler observed that the former belong to a collective form of State, whereas the latter belong to a form that is more individualistic. Furthermore, Dr. Maier-Rabler analysed ICTs' perspectives in terms of communication and infrastructure -- media (defined by a shift from programmes to services, media systems to infrastructure and recipient to users) and network (at a technical and social level). -

Paralelno sa ovim razvojem, praćena je i nit njegovog „preseka“ sa umetničkim muzičkim poljem, koja se manifestovala formiranjem interdisciplinarne umetničke prakse računarske muzike koju stvaraju muzički inženjeri – kompozitori koji vladaju i veštinama programiranja i digitalne sinteze zvuka. Kako bi se muzički sistemi i teorije preveli u računarske programe, bilo je neophodno sakupiti i obraditi veliku količinu podataka, te je uspostavljena i zajednička humanistička disciplina – computational musicology. Humphrey Doctor of Philosophy in Music and the Designated Emphasis in New Media University of California, Berkeley Professor James Q. Davies, Chair This dissertation argues that a cinematic approach to music recording developed during the 1950s, modeling the recording process of movie producers in post-production studios. This approach to recorded sound constructed an imaginary listener consisting of a blank perceptual space, whose sonic-auditory experience could be controlled through electroacoustic devices. This history provides an audiovisual genealogy for electroacoustic sound that challenges histories of recording that have privileged Thomas Edison’s 1877 phonograph and the recording industry it generated. It is elucidated through a consideration of the use of electroacoustic technologies for music that centered in Hollywood and drew upon sound recording practices from the movie industry. This consideration is undertaken through research in three technologies that underwent significant development in the 1950s: the recording studio, the mixing board, and the synthesizer. The 1956 Capitol Records Studio in Hollywood was the first purpose-built recording studio to be modelled on sound stages from the neighboring film lots. The mixing board was the paradigmatic tool of the recording studio, a central interface from which to direct and shape sound. -

the transom review April, 2005 Vol. 5/Issue 1 Walter Murch About Walter Murch Walter Murch has been honored by both British and American Motion Picture Academies for his picture editing and sound mixing. In 1997, Murch received an unprecedented double Oscar for both film editing and sound mixing on The English Patient (Anthony Minghella), as well as that year's British Academy Award for best editing. Seventeen years earlier, he had received an Oscar for best sound for Apocalypse Now ( F. Coppola), as well as British and American Academy nominations for his picture editing. He also won a double British Academy Award in 1975 for his film editing and sound mixing on The Conversation (F. Coppola), was nominated by both academies in 1978 for best film editing for Julia ( F. Zinnemann), and in 1991 received two nominations for best film editing from the American Academy for the films Ghost (J. Zucker) and The Godfather Part III (F. Coppola). Among Murch’s other credits are: picture editing for The Unbearable Lightness of Being (P. Kaufman), Romeo is Bleeding (P. Medak), First Knight (J. Zucker), The Talented Mr. Ripley (A. Minghella), and K-19: The Widowmaker (K. Bigelow). His most recent credit is for Cold Mountain (Anthony Minghella) for which he received an Academy Nomination for Editing, and British Academy Nominations for Editing and Sound Mixing. He is currently working on Jarhead for director Sam Mendes. The film, from the novel by Anthony Swofford, will be released in November 2005. He has also been involved in film restoration, notably Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil (1998), Francis Coppola’s Apocalypse Now Redux (2001), and Thomas Edison's Dickson Experimental Sound Film (1894). -

The ability to intentionally manipulate and modify a piece of sound has opened up considerable opportunities for music making. The evolution of technology has often driven new audio tools and effects, from early architectural acoustics through electromechanical and electronic devices to the digitisation of music production studios. Throughout time, music has constantly borrowed ideas and technological advancements from all other fields and contributed back to the innovative technology. This is defined as transsectorial innovation and fundamentally underpins the technological developments of audio effects. The development and evolution of audio effect technology is discussed, highlighting major technical breakthroughs and the impact of available audio effects. Keywords: audio effects; history; transsectorial innovation; technology; audio processing; music production 1. Introduction In this article, we describe the history of audio effects with regards to musical composition (music performance and production). We define audio effects as the controlled transformation of a sound typically based on some control parameters. As such, the term sound transformation can be considered synonymous with audio effect. -
