Playing (with) Sound Of the Animation of Digitized Sounds and their Reenactment by Playful Scenarios in the Design of Interactive Audio Applications Dissertation by Norbert Schnell Submitted for the degree of Doktor der Philosophie Supervised by Prof. Gerhard Eckel Prof. Rolf Inge Godøy Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, Austria October 2013 Abstract Investigating sound and interaction, this dissertation has its foundations in over a decade of practice in the design of interactive audio applications and the development of software tools supporting this design practice. The concerned applications are sound installations, digital in- struments, games, and simulations. However, the principal contribution of this dissertation lies in the conceptualization of fundamental aspects in sound and interactions design with recorded sound and music. The first part of the dissertation introduces two key concepts, animation and reenactment, that inform the design of interactive audio applications. While the concept of animation allows for laying out a comprehensive cultural background that draws on influences from philosophy, science, and technology, reenactment is investigated as a concept in interaction design based on recorded sound materials. Even if rarely applied in design or engineering – or in the creative work with sound – the no- tion of animation connects sound and interaction design to a larger context of artistic practices, audio and music technologies, engineering, and philosophy. Starting from Aristotle’s idea of the soul, the investigation of animation follows the parallel development of philosophical con- cepts (i.e. soul, mind, spirit, agency) and technical concepts (i.e. mechanics, automation, cybernetics) over many centuries. -

The “Work” of Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato through the Van Veen Recordings Stacey Low ORCID: 0000-0003-4287-9044 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music (Musicology/Ethnomusicology) September 2020 Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Faculty of Fine Arts and Music University of Melbourne Abstract Canto Ostinato for keyboard instruments (1973-79) is the best-known piece of Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012). The first work of his final compositional period, it advocates indeterminacy in performance, leaving performers to decide on dynamics, articulation, pedalling, instrumentation, and the number of repetitions of most of its 106 sections. Canto Ostinato’s aleatoric nature is investigated in relation to the traditional connotations of a “work,” as highlighted by Lydia Goehr. Georgina Born’s notion of a “provisional” type of work and Peter Elsdon’s classification of a work as the total of its realisations are posited as alternative definitions. An examination of Canto as a “work” would be incomplete without an analysis of the piece’s relationships to its composer, period of conception, performers, realisations, and audiences, and the relationships and contradictions between these aspects. This thesis investigates Canto in relation to several of its precedents in experimental music, such as improvisational music, minimalism, and indeterminacy. Several of ten Holt’s stated beliefs are investigated in relation to the score of Canto, such as the spiritual importance he accorded to the concept of tonality; the special interaction between the performers; the idea of each work developing on its own; and the notion of an “ideal performance” of an indeterminate piece. -

James Gardner Even Orpheus Needs a Synthi Since his return to active service a few years ago1, Peter Zinovieff has appeared quite frequently in interviews in the mainstream press and online outlets2 talking not only about his recent sonic art projects but also about the work he did in the 1960s and 70s at his own pioneering computer electronic music studio in Putney. And no such interview would be complete without referring to EMS, the synthesiser company he co-founded in 1969, or namechecking the many rock celebrities who used its products, such as the VCS3 and Synthi AKS synthesisers. Before this Indian summer (he is now 82) there had been a gap of some 30 years in his compositional activity since the demise of his studio. I say ‘compositional’ activity, but in the 60s and 70s he saw himself as more animateur than composer and it is perhaps in that capacity that his unique contribution to British electronic music during those two decades is best understood. In this article I will discuss just some of the work that was done at Zinovieff’s studio during its relatively brief existence and consider two recent contributions to the documentation and contextualization of that work: Tom Hall’s chapter3 on Harrison Birtwistle’s electronic music collaborations with Zinovieff; and the double CD Electronic Calendar: The EMS Tapes,4 which presents a substantial sampling of the studio’s output between 1966 and 1979. Electronic Calendar, a handsome package to be sure, consists of two CDs and a lavishly-illustrated booklet with lengthy texts. -

In each class we will learn about a music-making technique, composer, aesthetic movement, and the associated repertoire. Tests and Quizzes: There will be one test for this course. Students will be tested on the required listening and materials covered in lectures. To be prepared students must spend time outside class listening to required listening, and should keep track of the content of the lectures to study. Assignments and Participation: A portion of each class will be spent learning the techniques of electronic and computer music-making. Your attendance and participation in this portion of the class is imperative, since you will not necessarily be tested on the material that you learn. However, participation in the assignments and workshops will help you on the test and will provide you with some of the skills and context for your final projects. Assignment 1: Listening Assignment (Due June 30th) Assignment 2: Field Recording (Due July 12th) Final Project: The final project is the most important aspect of this course. The following descriptions are intentionally open-ended so that you can pursue a project that is of interest to you; however, it is imperative that your project must be connected to the materials discussed in class. Musicologist Hedy Law, a specialist in 18th-century French opera and ballet is, has already established herself well with students and faculty in the less public sphere of our academic activities. Introduction to Computer Music Week 1 Instructor: Prof. Roger B. Dannenberg Topics Discussed: Sound, Nyquist, SAL, Lisp and Control Constructs 1 Introduction Computers in all forms – desktops, laptops, mobile phones – are used to store and play music. Perhaps less obvious is the fact that music is now recorded and edited almost exclusively with computers, and computers are also used to generate sounds either by manipulating short audio clips called samples or by direct computation. In the late 1950s, engineers began to turn the theory of sampling into practice, turning sound into bits and bytes and then back into sound. These analog-to-digital converters, capable of turning one second’s worth of sound into thousands of numbers made it possible to transform the acoustic waves that we hear as sound into long sequences of numbers, which were then stored in computer memories. The numbers could then be turned back into the original sound. The ability to simply record a sound had been known for quite some time. The major advance of digital representations of sound was that now sound could be manipulated very easily, just as a chunk of data. Advantages of employing computer music and digital audio are: 1. There are no limits to the range of sounds that a computer can help explore. In principle, any sound can be represented digitally, and therefore any sound can be created. 2. Computers bring precision. The process to compute or change a sound can be repeated exactly, and small incremental changes can be specified in detail. Computers facilitate microscopic changes in sounds enabling us to producing desirable sounds.
