VARIOUS ARTISTS LITA 179 — CD | 2xLP | Digital [Partial] • Follow up to LITA’s critically acclaimed and best selling 2019 release Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie 1976–1986 • New artwork by renowned illustrator Hiroshi Nagai • 2xLP housed in a deluxe wide spine jacket with full color inner sleeves • Remastered audio • Extensive artist bios in oversized fold–out booklet

When Light In The Attic released Pacific Breeze: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie1 976–1986 in 2019, it was the first collection of its kind to be released outside Japan. It proved to be just what music fans had been waiting for—a compilation of sought–after tracks that had been nearly impossible to obtain unless you were well–connected with dealers and collectors, or traveled regularly to the countless record stores in Japan. Pacific Breeze included Minako Yoshida, Taeko Ohnuki, Hiroshi Sato and Haruomi Hosono among other key players of ‘70s–’80s Japanese City Pop, the nebulous genre that encompassed an “amalgam of AOR, R&B, jazz fusion, , boogie and disco, all a touch dizzy with tropical euphoria,” as we described it the first time around.

With Pacific Breeze 2: Japanese City Pop, AOR & Boogie1 972–1986 we dig deeper into those sounds of bubble–era Japan. From the proto–City Pop funk of Bread & Butter and Eiichi Ohtaki to the crate–digger favorites Eri Ohno and Piper, the latest entry in Light In The Attic’s Japan Archival Series brings another set of sought–after tunes, most of which have never before been available outside of Japan. Tomoko Aran and Anri, also included in this compilation, are just a few of the artists who have gained popularity in recent years thanks to Vaporwave, the meme–genre that heavily samples Japanese City Pop to create its particular aesthetic.

Pacific Breeze 2 once again feature the artwork of renowned Tokyo–based illustrator Hiroshi Nagai, whose iconic images of resort living have become synonymous with City Pop. Nagai’s urban tropical imagery is a perfect match for the expertly curated tunes, evoking a certain sense of nostalgia for the leisure lifestyles of ‘70s–’80s Tokyo, while simultaneously being perfectly in tune with the current zeitgeist.

Mathews The Fantasy Vocal Sessions Vol. 2

Label: Effendi Recordings Catalog #: ER002 UPC: 700261481319 Category: R&B|Soul Release Date: May 8. 2020

There are countless ways to express gratitude. For David K. Mathews, the veteran Bay Area pianist, organist and keyboardist, the recording studio seemed like an ideal vehicle for crafting an extended love letter to the scene that’s nurtured and inspired him for four decades. A companion to 2017’s critically hailed The Fantasy Vocal Sessions Vol. 1, Standards, the second volume showcases many of same brilliant Bay Area singers (and a much larger cast of players). But instead of concentrating on American Songbook standards through the lens of straight-ahead jazz, this album offers a deep dive into the Great American Soulbook with a particular focus on songs defined or written by Donny Hathaway, , Ray Charles and James Brown. It’s a communal celebration, a welcoming stage with an encompassing spotlight. “Everyone gets a little taste,” says Mathews.

The Fantasy Vocal Sessions were born out of Mathew’s desire to record a project with Etta James, the R&B icon with whom he spent two decades touring. When her failing health derailed the collaboration, Mathews decided to seize the moment, inviting a diverse cast of musicians into West Berkeley’s Fantasy Studios for the initial sessions. He included some genuine hitmakers in the mix, but Mathews wanted to highlight some of the region’s most extravagantly under-celebrated artists. The subtitle for the could easily be Hidden Gems. The project’s double-barreled name refers to both the iconic and now shuttered studio and to the recordings themselves. “They’re the Fantasy Sessions and it’s my fantasy too,” Mathews says. “It’s my thanks for being able to grow up in this wonderful and culturally diverse place, and it’s my love letter to all of my musical brothers and sisters who have inspired me throughout my long career in the Bay Area music scene.”

Dena DeRose, vocals and piano Martin Wind, bass • Matt Wilson, drums with Sheila Jordan, vocal • Jeremy Pelt, Houston Person, tenor

Dena DeRose’s music is like a cool breeze; she’s wry, wise, impeccably musical, no-nonsense, and fun. After her three decades as a pianist-singer, DeRose’s voice and her fingers are on the most harmonious of terms. She’s not afraid of simplicity; DeRose has no time for hollow sentiment, nor does she feel a compulsion to outsmart the makers of the Great American Songbook. Her approach to jazz resides mainly in her swinging rhythm and pianistic phrasing. Her eleventh album as a leader takes its name from a breezy tune, full of hip changes, that was composed by Alan Broadbent. The lyrics, provided by the legendary Mark Murphy, resonated deeply with DeRose since when she’s not teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Austria, she’s frequently on tour. Appropriately enough she is joined by three other HighNote artists—singer Sheila Jordan, saxophonist Houston Person, and HCD 7328 trumpeter Jeremy Pelt—all of whom have appeared with DeRose on her global travels. With her long-time rhythm section of Martin Wind & Matt Wilson, DeRose delivers a recording that celebrates the life of the jazz artist and the friendships they make.

Larry Willis, piano Jeremy Pelt, trumpet • Joe Ford, alto saxophone Blake Meister, bass • Victor Lewis, drums

It may be somewhat ironic, yet ultimately fitting that this, the final recording by Larry Willis, brought the veteran pianist/composer right back to the place where he first began his impressive career as recording artist that spanned over a period of six decades. The Harlem, New York born Willis first entered the hallowed halls of Rudy Van Gelder’s legendary Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio as a twenty-two year old graduate of the Manhattan School of Music on January 29, 1965 to record with Jackie McLean for Blue Note Records. Willis’s expansive resume includes entries with the likes of Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Stan Getz, Jerry Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, Clifford Jordan, Carmen McRae, David “Fathead” Newman, Woody Shaw, and many more. He appeared on hundreds of albums as a sideman and dozens more as a leader of his own impressive bands. The music HCD 7328 played here with long-time friends Victor Lewis and Joe Ford, and his relatively new colleague Jeremy Pelt shows Larry Willis displaying the intense creativity and impeccable taste which made him one of the most respected keyboard artists in jazz.

With their second release, Vancouver oud player Gordon Grdina’s middle eastern/avant jazz ensemble is now a quintet with three outstanding GORDON GRDINA’S THE string players: illustrious New York improvisers Mark Helias (bass) and MARROW Hank Roberts () are joined by Vancouver violinist Josh Zubot; Hamin Safar-e-Daroon Honari continues on Persian percussion. Grdina’s compositions are CD mostly based on classical middle eastern traditions but are performed in a creative jazz context where improvised group interplay is as important as solos. Grdina comments:

“This recording carries on the development of the ensemble from where Ejdeha left off. The group is defining its own aesthetic, combining aspects of the Persian dastgah and Arabic Maqam systems with and harmonic fluidity. The band is dedicated to creating modern music that pays homage to tradition while championing personal expression. The title Safar-e-daroon means ‘inner journey.’ The group as a whole and each of the individual musicians are searching inward to best express Release Date: 24-Apr-20 their own experience of life, love and sorrow. We hope this music will help [Songlines] the listener on their own Safar-e-daroon.” CD / SGL24102 / 774355241028 / $11.50 This project extends Grdina’s previous fusions involving jazz improvisation and middle eastern music, from his 2006 debut Think Like the Waves to East Van Strings’ The Breath of Statues and his 10-piece Arabic band Haram’s Her Eyes Illuminate. It also draws to some extent on his more avant jazz and guitar-based New York projects No Difference (featuring Helias), and the recent quartet releases Inroads and Cooper’s Park. (All titles are on Songlines).

Critics’ quotes:

****1/2 “Grdina’s rich experience as improviser and composer projects contributes to his strong personal voice as a oud player, different from other modern oud players who fuse the Middle-Eastern traditions with contemporary music or jazz…The Marrow delivers Grdina’s intricate compositions with an organic fluidity, adapting superbly to the complex quarter-tones-based modes…” – Eyal Hareuveni, Collective

“…a dense album where a great deal is going on just below the surface…Taken together, it’s a polyphony of the Arabic variety that holds its cards close to the chest....” – John Garratt, PopMatters

***1/2 “Grdina takes his jazz improvisations further into the poetic exoticism of the Middle East...a compelling work of contemporary and ancient telepathy…” – Mike Jurkovic, All About Jazz

“...its quartet formation allows for a quieter dynamic range and telepathic interactions…Grdina and Honari impress throughout, and Helias is one of those invaluable players who makes every recording he appears on better. Yet as satisfying as their playing is, one of Ejdeha’s major draws for me is simply being able to hear Roberts in action… every time he steps forth on Ejdeha proves memorable.” – Ron Schepper, Textura NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

Bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and pianist Wayne Horvitz have been musical partners for almost 20 years, notably in Horvitz’s Gravitas Quartet SHOENBECK, SARA / HORVITZ, (formed 2004) and his Some Days are Forever Afternoon (2015), both WAYNE on Songlines. They formed this duo in 2018 to play a program of their Cell Walk own music, and this is the first recording. There is something unexpected CD and quite special in how well the two instruments blend (mostly acoustic, occasionally involving electronics on the piano). The music is composed, improvised, and everywhere in between. It is a study of the crossroads where texture and extended technique meet with and support the expression of melody and song.

Schoenbeck is regarded as one of the premiere bassoonists of her time in improvised music, jazz and new music. Frequent collaborators include , Butch Morris, Mark Dresser, Tomeka Reid, Pamela Z, Roscoe Mitchell, , Nicole Mitchell, Michael Leonhart, and Henry Threadgill. She maintains her commitment to micro-tonal music and Release Date: 22-May-20 contemporary music, including recent performance of works by Boulez [Songlines] and Xenakis. She has worked with numerous chamber groups including CD / SGL16312 / 774355163122 / $11.50 SEM and The Wet Ink Ensemble and has appeared as a featured improvising soloist with the Mivos Quartet performing Horvitz’ These Hills of Glory ( and Improviser). She appears on the soundtracks to The Matrix 2 and 3, Dahmer and Spanglish.

Horvitz, an integral member of the NY Downtown scene in the 80s, is known for his long-standing collaborations with , Butch Morris, Bill Frisell, Robin Holcomb et al., as well as being a prolific composer for orchestra, string quartet, mixed chamber instrumentations, and electronics. Recent works include commissions for the Seattle Symphony, The North Corner Chamber Orchestra, and an installation for the Seattle Art Museum. He is the recipient of the 2015 Doris Duke Performers Award and the 2019 America Prize.

Critics’ quotes of previous Horvitz release The Snowghost Sessions:

“...what ties the entire album together is a dark-hued, cinematic atmosphere...Horvitz and company conjure a hazy, dreamlike effect that stays with you...a strange beauty.” – John Frederick Moore, Jazziz

“...Horvitz again proves he has no musical limitations or boundaries and can go from style to style with ease and intellectual curiosity.” – Doug Simpson, Audiophile Audition

“Most of these tracks are designed with memorable licks and hummable melody lines amid the leader’s soulful twirls and breezy lyricism...[yields] additional enchantments on subsequent listens.” – Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz

“There’s a laconic integrity in this music, a conviction that sometimes less can actually just be less, to the betterment of all.” – Nate Chinen, WBGO Take Five NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

LP In March 1975, Jim Sullivan mysteriously disappeared outside Santa Rosa, New Mexico. His VW bug was found abandoned, his motel room untouched. Some think he got lost in the desert. Some think he fell foul of a local family with alleged mafia ties. Some think he was abducted by aliens.

By coincidence – or perhaps not – Jim’s 1969 debut album was titled U.F.O. Released in tiny numbers on a private label, it too was truly lost, until Seattle’s Light In The Attic Records begun a years-long quest to give it the full release it Release Date: 10-Apr-20 (galaxy coloured vinyl) deserves – and to solve the mystery of Sullivan’s disappearance. Only one of Release Date: 24-Apr-20 (black repress) those things happened. [Light In The Attic] LP / LITA054LPCOLOR / 826853305419 / $29.31 For record collectors, some albums are considered impossible to get hold of, LP / LITA054LP / 826853005418 / $25.94 records so rare you could sit on eBay for years and not get a sniff of a copy. U.F.O. is one of those albums. A seventh son, Jim Sullivan was a West Coast should-have-been, an Irish-American former high school quarterback whose gift for storytelling earned him cult status in the Malibu bar where he performed nightly. Sullivan was always on the edge of fame; hanging out with movie stars like Harry Dean Stanton, performing on the Jose Feliciano show, even stealing a cameo in the ultimate hippie movie, Easy Rider.

Friend and actor Al Dobbs thought he could change all that, and founded a label – Monnie Records – to release Jim’s album, enlisting the assistance of Phil Spector’s legendary sessioneers The Wrecking Crew to do so. That’s Don Randi, Earl Palmer and Jimmy Bond you can hear, the latter also acting as producer and arranger.

U.F.O. was a different beast to the one-man-and-his-guitar stuff Jim had been doing on stage; instead, it was a fully realised album of scope and imagination, a folk-rock record with its head in the stratosphere. Sullivan’s voice is deep and expressive like Fred Neil with a weathered and worldly Americana sound like Joe South, pop songs that aren’t happy – but with filled with despair. The album is punctuated with a string section (that recalls David Axelrod), other times a Wurlitzer piano provides the driving groove (as if Memphis great Jim Dickinson was running the show). U.F.O. is a slice of American pop music filtered from the murky depths of Los Angeles, by way of the deep south.

With no music industry contacts, the record went largely unnoticed, and Jim simply moved on, releasing a further album on the Playboy label in 1972. But by 1975, his marriage breaking up, Jim left, for Nashville and the promise of a new life as a sessioneer in the home of C&W. That’s where it gets hazy.

We know he was stopped by cops for swerving on the highway in Santa Rosa, some 15 hours after setting off. We know he was taken to a local police station, found to be sober, and told to go to the local La Mesa Motel to get some rest, which he did. Some time later, his car was spotted on a ranch belonging to the local Genetti family, who confronted him about his business there. The next day his car was found 26 miles down the road, abandoned. His car and his hotel room contained, among other things, his twelve-string guitar, his wallet, his clothes and several copies of his second album, but no note, and no Jim. It was as if he had simply vanished into thin air.

Jim’s family travelled out to join search parties looking for him, the local papers printed missing person stories, but the search proved fruitless. Around the same time, the local sheriff retired and the Genettis moved to Hawaii. Jim’s manager Robert “Buster” Ginter later stated that during the early morning hours of a long evening Jim and Buster were talking about what would you do if they had to disappear. Jim said he’d walk into the desert and never come back.

Tracking down the truth behind Jim’s mystery became an obsession of Light In The Attic’s Matt Sullivan (no relation) when he happened upon a copy of the album and fell in love. He took on a cross country pilgrimage in search of master tapes and truth, and came back with neither, despite hundreds of phone calls, e-mails, letters, faxes, private detectives, telepathy, palm readings and meetings with Jim’s wife, son and producer. Thanks to superb digital mastering techniques, Light In The Attic is still able to present a clean, near perfect copy of Jim’s masterpiece for general consumption for the first time. Enjoy. And remember, beyond the mystery, there’s the music.

He has recorded albums for North American labels such as EMI, Warner Brothers & Verve…cementing his career with a series of tight musical workouts Release Date: 24-Apr-20 moving seamlessly between funk, , soundtracks, soul, jazz, dance [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] and rock. Mr. Valle’s work has been sampled/ remixed by major artists from the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West & .

One of Valle’s favorite bands to frequently collaborate with was no doubt Azymuth, who took their name from a Valle song!

Azymuth (Bertrami-Malheiros-Conti) started their individual careers in the 1960s in the emergent Bossa nova and jazz scene of Rio, living in the same bohemian block in Copacabana and playing in small bars as session musicians under various other names.

It was the early 1970s when Azymuth really began to cause a stir and Marcos Valle invited them to record on a soundtrack LP he was doing. The unique Azymuth sound was now born: a mix of , samba, funk and jazz that they defined as MPB-jazz (MPB stands for Musica Popular Brasileira). Over the decades Azymuth released extremely successful albums (selling millions of copies) on labels such as Polydor, and Atlantic. Hitting the charts on multiple occasions, Azymuth played at the Monterrey and Montreux jazz festivals and at venues around the globe.

The band has worked with legendary musicians from Joe Henderson to Stevie Wonder and they’ve also been remixed/sampled by artists such as Flying Lotus, will.i.am, MF DOOM and Peanut Butter Wolf. Their unique brand of fusion-music has influenced three generations of musicians, DJs, and producers. Music journalists across the spectrum from mainstream to underground, celebrated these raw yet wildly imaginative and musically accomplished tracks that were a revelation of jazz, funk and disco, with some even stating that the roots of EDM were on display in their early recordings.

On the album we are presenting you (Brazil by Music – Fly Cruzeiro) the listener is getting yet another fantastic early Valle/Azymuth collaboration. Released in 1972, this rare album was pressed and gifted to customers of the ‘Cruzeiro’ airline company. This promotional record came as no surprise because the connection between Cruzeiro Airlines and Valle was very tight (Valle’s father was the manager and his brother was a co-pilot there).

Next to the Valle/Azymuth material present, other songs include some of the all-time best Brazilian standards originally written by renowned artists such as Jorge Ben & Antonio Carlos Jobim. He belongs to those who transformed the local music scene born in the Southern States of the United States – around New Orleans – into an international language.

It was in the 1920s, in Chicago, that he recorded his first records with His Hot Five and His Hot Seven. His personality and his natural enthusiasm, combined with his talent as a trumpet player and singer, helped him pave his way to success.

He traveled the United States with his orchestra throughout the 1930s Release Date: 1-May-20 and the 1940s, and appeared on television sets from all around the world [Light In The Attic / Masters of Jazz] throughout the 1950s and the 1960s. • Recorded live at The Floating Studio—no overdubs employed, no CARNEY, JEFF tapes used, and no post-mix done: the sound is exactly what Imperfect Space Journeys happened on the spot. • 24bit/96kHz transfers taken from the original analog tapes 2LP • Mastered for vinyl by legendary musician and sound engineer Eroc • Includes three bonus tracks • Comes with an eight-page color LP-sized insert booklet

“Immediately engaging & all recorded live without overdubs. An analogue e-music roller-coaster ride. Hop on if you dare!” —Eroc

Finally available on vinyl, this underground masterwork of analog electronic music pushed the envelope of melodic synth freakouts to unimaginable edges and undreamt of realms of space. Recorded live on Release Date: 1-May-20 the spot without overdubs, Jeff Carney’s “Imperfect Space Journeys” (ISJ) [Light In The Attic / Lion Productions] has become a highly prized collectible amongst “Berlin School” fanatics 2LP / LIONLP179 / 778578317911 / $41.13 still soaking in the ‘70s sounds of Klaus Schulze, Ashra and Tangerine Dream, as well as fans of Terry Riley’s organ works (Riley is Carney’s cousin), and Heldon heads. Originally a cassette-only release, the rare copy appearing on the collector market can exchange hands at three- figure sums even on cassette, making it one of the most sought after treasures of the electronic underground.

With a keyboard arsenal more likely to have been assembled in the late seventies, West Coast space music architect Jeff Carney rebelled against prevailing digital trends with analog electronic wizardry, unleashing this statement of purpose on the New York “Audiofile” label in 1988. Designed around the possibilities of live performance, Carney used simple, captivating hooks with which to weave tapestries of electronic texture. His influences on this debut are apparent, but his sounds absolutely unique. Every lead seems to have a tone outside the sounds already explored in the genre. Sound effects give a sense of deep space: perhaps owing their galactic awareness to Gong and Hawkwind, but pushing like a volcano into other realms. “Imperfect Space Journeys” is a study in minimalist rhythmic structures that enable Carney to decorate with cosmic colors and wild effects collages, while also tending to be highly melodic. “Noise” is used as a means to create images of spaceships passing in the deepest of space skies. Tension and release are used for maximum impact. But there is also plenty of sonic ear candy. Melodic lines that you’ll find yourself wanting to revisit again and again!

Source for this reissue: 24bit/96kHz transfers taken from the original analog tapes. This deluxe reissue of ISJ includes three bonus tracks not included on the original cassette release. Comes with an eight-page color LP-sized insert booklet. Limited to 500x copies worldwide.

Carney recorded “Imperfect Space Journeys” at 20 years old. He would soon produce works in which his skills were further honed and his unique sonic paintings took an even more exploratory shape, but ISJ is the beginning of the story. It is where the “journey” begins. NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

• Newly Restored and Remastered Edition of the 1984 Japanese City PIPER Pop Classic Sunshine Kiz • First ever vinyl reissue • Exclusive pink vinyl with yellow splatter edition LP • Includes 24×24 poster

Riding high on the success of Gentle Breeze, PIPER was eager to put out more new material. Keeping the same members and guest musicians, the CS band used its excitement and forward momentum – aided no doubt by its ever-growing experience and taste for experimentation – to produce its next album, Sunshine Kiz, within the tiny span of six months. And despite seeing no change in personnel for these latest efforts, PIPER’s musicality was constantly evolving.

Perhaps most obviously, Sunshine Kiz showed the band beginning to Release Date: 1-May-20 break away from its signature style. Instrumentals were no longer the [Light In The Attic / Ship To Shore] focus as more vocal-centric tracks made their way to the fore. Sunshine LP / STS071 / 604220666475 / $34.38 Kiz turned out to be a “song album,” and its lyric sheet saw a substantial CS / STS0718 / 826853000734 / $15.50 increase in the number of words. A Drumulator replaced the LinnDrums, and the programmed percussion suddenly sounded more natural. Some songs actually featured live drumming, abandoning programmed beats altogether.

It could be said that this all amounted to, at least partially, a return to PIPER’s roots. Or, maybe more accurately, it was something like PIPER circa 1981 filtered through the signature sound the band had forged with their two Breeze albums of 1983.The title track on Sunshine Kiz was released as their second-ever single – their first since “FarAway” from their debut album. And with this new single there even came a music video. NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

• Rare Private Press Funk/Soul from 1983 SYLK • Featuring James Brown collaborator Leroy Harper Jr. Sylk • First vinyl reissue since 1983 • Deluxe 180g vinyl edition (available on both black and clear vinyl) LP • Exclusive LITA CLEAR Vinyl Edition Limited to 100 copies • Black Vinyl Edition Limited to 500 copies, comes with obi strip

Sylk was a short-lived soul & funk band from the Aiken, South Carolina – Augusta, Georgia border area (better known as the CSRA) who released just one album in 1983. Their self-titled (and only) album would become a much sought-after private pressed holy within the record collecting community.

Sylk was founded by Leroy Harper Jr. (sax/keyboards) and Ben Moses (bass/guitar). Soon they were also joined by key-members Keith Release Date: 1-May-20 Henderson (drums/percussion) and Michael Simpkins (vocals/). [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] The band also sought out John Howard (who was known for his funky LP / TWM49LITA / 752505992433 / $29.31 rhythm style guitar + excellent soloing) and David Sanders (a known rock keyboardist in the local scene). Later down the line George Bright and Cathey McLaughlin also teamed up with Sylk…the line-up was now complete. All members were friends, frequented the same music scene or knew each other from high school. Leroy Harper Jr. & Michael Simpkins already made their bones playing together in the local funk band Exit Enterprises, one of the hottest bands in the CSRA area. All these talented musicians (some were playing from the tender age of 15) were ready to get funkin’…it was time to form SYLK and get busy.

Ben Moses (who is now a preacher) was the band leader and it was his idea to write and record the album before the band would start playing gigs. Ben was al tall guy with long fingers who played on a ‘Peavey Natural ood’W bass guitar (which gave the band its classic funky-smooth sound). Rehearsing at Ben’s house, they were all green first-time song writers…but the songs were flowing in an almost organic fashion. Soon after the writing process was completed, they went and recorded the album at John Peterson’s home studio in North Augusta SC. The engineer on duty was the legendary Jim Loyd responsible for mastering milestone recordings from the likes of The Meters, Johnny Cash and The B-52’s. With a strong album up their sleeve, the live bookings started coming in and the band (wearing P-funk style outfits) made good money playing local gigs. Sadly, after a while some band members fell on hard times and this marked the beginning of the end of the band. In the end, Sylk only lasted a year before calling it quits.

When the Sylk chapter came to a close, founding member ‘‘Funky’’ Leroy Harper Jr. began to focus on his personal musical career. He’s served as a founder for several bands (including Spur of the Moment, Painted Man and Soul Power Posse). The incredible talented sax and keyboard player has also performed with Stevie Wonder, Millie Jackson, James Levi (Herbie Hancock’s The Headhunters) and Tony Cook (The J.B.’s). ‘‘Funky’’ Leroy Harper Jr. joined James Brown in 1991 and started playing/recording (and touring extensively) with the godfather of soul until Brown’s death in 2006. Over the years, harper has made appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and The Arsenio Hall Show (among many others). Currently he’s still playing gigs with his band Funky Leroy Harper Jr’s All Starz and shows no signs of slowing down!

Sylk was a true example of a bright light burning out way too quickly, thankfully we are left with the unique (and very rare) document that is their self-titled album. Although it was recorded in 1983, it has a strong 1978-1979 vibe working for it. The entire album is filled with sexy (yet strong) vocals, space-like rhythmic keyboard vibrations, groovy bass lines & fat that compels the listener into a dancing frenzy…one can hear the cosmic touches and influences ofThe J.B.’s, Bernie Worrell (amongst other P-Funk greats) and Herbie Hancock softly slipping in. This is hot and soulful Southern Funk…smooth as sylk!

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first ever vinyl reissue of this fantastic funk/soul album (originally released in 1983 on Earthquake Records). This rare record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork. • 25 magic moments chosen from literally hundreds of vocal duets

VARIOUS ARTISTS Meetings make music, especially songs. During the Forties and Fifties, Jazz Duos – Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald artists were invited to perform — onstage, in numerous radio shows and & Friends on television — in a particular format that quickly attracted an immense 2LP audience: the duo. The success of these duets had producers in television, films and musicals scrambling to find personalities they could pair onstage. As for record companies, they sent a succession of their own artists into the studios… two by two.

Duets became a all of its own, and the duo who made probably the greatest impression were, of course, “Ella & Louis”. Their performances together take up more than one side here, but they weren’t the only ones to sing duets. The genre had many specialists, not only American favourites like Nat King Cole, Dean Martin or Bing Crosby, but many others less well-known outside the U.S. (Johnny Mercer, Doris Day, Release Date: 15-May-20 Pearl Bailey, Hot Lips Page etc.) whose voices combined to produce the [Light In The Attic / Masters of Jazz] same result: they made miracles. 2LP / MOJ107 / 3760300310922 / $33.53 So here are 25 magic moments chosen from literally hundreds of vocal duets handed down to us today. They are all evidence of a most extraordinary period in jazz. NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

• Published for the first time ever on vinyl and CD since its original PALE COCOON highly sought after cassette release on Pafe Record in 1984. Mayu • Pressed on 2LP vinyl by Pallas and printed on high quality archival gatefold jackets. CD • Remastered and reproduced from the original release with never before seen images of Pale Cocoon. • Collaborative release between Incidental Music (USA) and Conatala (Japan). 2LP In the early 1980s, Pale Cocoon member Tsuyoshi Kawabata received the vivid image of springing forth from a cocoon as he was composing music in his hometown of Toyama, Japan. Having spent time arranging sounds on a 4-track recorder in the musical chrysalis of his home studio, Kawabata moved to a larger studio and converted his recordings to an open reel with the help of other musicians on the Pafe Record roster, Release Date: 15-May-20 leading to the musical metamorphosis of his full-length work (Mayu). [Light In The Attic / Incidental Music / Conatala] CD / INC004CD / 826853000765 / $17.19 Like the Belgian symbolist paintings that served as inspiration during 2LP / INC004 / 826853000758 / $32.69 Kawabata’s musical process – the compositions featured on Mayu serve to elevate the nuanced elements of daily life, each sound intentionally crafted with a meticulous approach to best represent its objective nature. Sounds of the Japanese landscape in summertime parallel swirling synthesizers and noise; shimmering guitar sounds take the shape of a snowflake. In this way, Kawabata’s pure reflection on the objective nature of sounds evokes the deeper spiritual essence of their origins – taking on a symbolic role in order to elucidate a greater psychic nature… or as French poet Stéphane Mallarmé writes, “to depict not the thing but the effect it produces”.

The result is a musical evocative of Kawabata’s hometown of Toyama – a collection of compositions with inherent seasonality in their , mirroring the landscapes along the sea of Japan. The album opener “Sora” acts as a portal into Kawabata’s world, segueing from a dizzying whirlwind of processed recorder into an ecstatic atmosphere of guitar and invoking the likes of Woo, Cluster, and the euphoric stylings of Penguin Café Orchestra. The next piece, “Shunmin”, waltzes deeper into Mayu’s fever dream, creating a gorgeous atmosphere with hypnotic programming leading a chorus of processed acoustic guitar and cosmic keyboard . At times, the listener may hear the dreamy post-punk influence of Cherry Red Records and peers The Durutti Column throughout Mayu – a group whom Pale Cocoon shared the stage with during their Japan tour of 1984. However, the album itself is undoubtedly the singular vision of Kawabata, informed by the musical landscape of Toyama – the same environs which fostered the sounds of Pale Cocoon’s label Pafe Record and fellow groups Funeral Party and Virgin Mayonnaise who perform on Mayu.

Incidental Music and Conatala are proud to present Mayu, remastered by Makoto Ohshiro and published for the first time on vinyl since its original cassette release on Pafe Record in 1984. Mayu will be available on 2LP vinyl pressed by Pallas, CD, and digital formats in mid May, 2020. NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

Pacific Breeze documents Japan’s blast into the stratosphere. By the 1960s, the nation had achieved a postwar miracle, soaring to become the world’s second largest economy. Thriving tech exports sent The Rising Sun over the moon. Its pocket cassette players, bleeping video games, and gleaming cars boomed worldwide, wooing pleasure points and pumping Japanese pockets full of yen.

Release Date: 15-May-20 Japan’s financial buoyancy also permeated its popular culture, birthing an [Light In The Attic / Ship To Shore] audio analog called City Pop. This new sound arose in the mid ’70s and 2LP / LITA163LP11 / 826853116312 / $47.89 ruled through the ’80s, channeling the country’s contemporary psyche. It was sophisticated music mirroring Japan’s punch-drunk prosperity. City Pop epitomized the era, providing a soundtrack for emerging urbanites. An optimistic buzzed through the music in neon-bathed, gauzy tableaus coated with groove-heavy strokes.

Pacific Breeze is an expertly compiled collection of choice cuts that range from silky smooth grooves to innovative pop bangers and everything in between. Long-revered by crate diggers and adventurous music heads, this music has never been released outside of Japan until now. Including key artists like Taeko Ohnuki and Minako Yoshida, as well as cult favorites Hitomi Tohyama and Hiroshi Sato, the long-awaited release also features newly commissioned cover painting by Tokyo-based artist Hiroshi Nagai, whose iconic images of resort living have graced the covers of many classic City Pop albums of the 1980s.

Many of the key City Pop players evolved from the Japanese New Music scene of the early ’70s, as heard on Light In The Attic’s acclaimed Even a Tree Can Shed Tears: Japanese Folk & Rock 1969-1973, the first release of the ongoing Japan Archival Series. In fact, you could say City Pop set sail with a champagne smash from Happy End, the freakishly talented subversives who included amongst their ranks Haruomi Hosono and Shigeru Suzuki, both featured on this compilation. As Michael K. Bourdaghs noted in his book, Sayonara Amerika, Sayonara Nippon, this music was, “Deconstructing the line between imitation and authenticity.” Some of the best City Pop teeters in this zone—easy listening with mutant exotica, tilted techno-pop, and steamy boogie bubbling beneath the gloss. Jude Bondeze hails from Bangui, Central African Republic and is probably best known for his more traditional Tene Sango album… but his debut 1981 release saw him in a very funky mood indeed! • Rare Nigerian Afrobeat Classic SOLLO, JAKE • First Vinyl Reissue Since 1980 Boogie Legs • Deluxe 180g vinyl edition (available on both black and clear vinyl) • Black Vinyl Edition Limited to 500 copies, comes with obi strip LP Jake Sollo (Born in Nigeria as Nkem Okonkwo) started his career in the 1960s as a member of The Hykkers, a popular band that drew large audiences across the country (even during the turmoil of the Biafra civil war). After The Hykkers disbanded, Jake joined the Aba-based super- group The Funkees…a musical outfit turned into instant superstars due to the State Broadcasting Service’s heavy rotation of their demo tracks. The Funkees became a phenomenon that spread across the country fast (and eventually to England where they were championed by the legendary John Peel). By 1976, due to creative and personal tensions, The Funkees slowly started disintegrating. Jake Sollo was soon offered the golden Release Date: 29-May-20 to join the ‘crème de la crème’ of Afro-rock groups: Osibisa. [Light In The Attic / Tidal Waves Music] Jake’s distinctive rhythm guitar graced their hits, but his tenure with them LP / TWM48 / 752505992563 / $29.31 was short-lived…in 1977, Sollo and two other members left the band because of financial disagreements.

Jake Sollo quickly moved on and did just fine after his experiences with said bands…he got steady work as a session musician and became a hot producer in the London scene. Eventually, that chapter came to a close as well (with budgets and visas to record in the UK becoming increasingly scarce at this point). Jake returned to Nigeria where he started recording and producing albums, during this period he became the MOST in-demand producer in Nigeria.

Sollo’s specialty was bouncy ‘high-gloss’ boogie (though he occasionally produced artists in other genres as well). Regardless of which style he was working in, a ‘Jake Sollo production’ was always instantly recognizable and his records’ main sonic signature was probably the distinct sound of the Prophet “V” synthesizer (a hot piece of hardware that was transforming music in Europe and America). Rumor has it that Sollo owned one of the two only Prophet synthesizers present on the African continent (the other one belonging to William Onyeabor). Without exaggeration and according to his peers…Jake was the hottest and most prolific music producer in Nigeria between the late 1970s and mid 1980s.

Next to his productions for other artists and major labels like EMI & Polydor, Jake Sollo would go on to record a total of three astonishing albums: ‘Coming Home’ (1977), ‘Show Me How’ (1979) and ‘Boogie Legs’ (1980). Boogie Legs would be Sollo’s final album, his career was cut short when he tragically died in a car accident in 1985…depriving the world of what no doubt would have been decades of more innovative and creative music.

On Boogie Legs, the listener is treated to Jake Sollo’s trademark sound with touches of pop, plenty of African groove disco, moments of psychedelic reggae, chattering , mad synth skills and fat angular basslines … all bound together with Jakes distinctive guitar playing and smooth production. A triumphant album that combined the raw power from his roots with the slick tricks he learned in London. Also featured on these recordings are some ‘all-star’ guest appearances by musicians from the likes of Trevor Murrell (Kim Wilde, Sade) and Ray Carless (Maxi Priest, Adele).

Boogie Legs is a sexy monster of an album that shows off Jake Sollo as the multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire and Apostle of Nigerian music he was…the sound of an artist at the height of his power, with a career that came to an untimely end…but leaving us with a BIG legacy.

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the first ever vinyl reissue of Jake Sollo’s ‘Boogie Legs’ album (originally released in 1980 on Taretone). This rare Nigerian record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) is now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork. VARIOUS ARTISTS For the last 20 years London-based author and party organiser Tim Love Saves the Day: A History Of American Lawrence has dedicated himself to excavating the history of New York Dance Music Culture 1970-1979 Part 1 City party culture and bringing some of the most powerful aspects of that 2LP culture to London’s dance scene, from where it has ricocheted around the world.

Having conducted the first and set of major interviews with David Mancuso of the New York City Loft, Lawrence started to host Loft-style Lucky Cloud Sound System parties with David and friends in London in June 2003. In February 2004 he published the first of three published three pioneering histories that have excavated and championed the previously overlooked foundations of contemporary party culture: Love Saves the Day: A History of American Dance Music (1970-79), Hold on to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene (1973-92), Release Date: 29-May-20 and Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor (1980-83). Since 2018 [Light In The Attic / Reappearing Records] Lawrence has hosted and DJed at the community audiophile party “All 2LP / REAPLP2PT1 / 5060731227379 / $41.13 Our Friends. Paper Magazine describes him as the “reigning authority on the history of dance music in New York”.

With knowledge to share, and a readership as well as a dance floor to feed, Lawrence released Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor as the debut imprint on Reappearing Records. A year in the making, a compilation featuring rare and iconic tracks that appear in his much-loved and heavily-thumbed classic Love Saves the Day amounts to the follow-up. The collection features several tracks selected regularly by Mancuso, the party host who exerted a prophetic and unparalleled influence on New York City party culture, as charted by Lawrence. It also includes choice picks from groundbreaking DJs such as Michael Cappello, Steve D’Acquisto, Francis Grasso, Richie Kaczor, Larry Levan and Nicky Siano, whose expressive contributions are faithfully recorded in Love Saves the Day. The compilation traces how disco grew out of the record collections and intuitive sensibility of these and other DJs, offering a unique survey of the era’s expansive sonic palette.

• The third release from Night Dreamer’s essential “Direct-to-Disc” BARTZ, GARY & MAISHA sessions Night Dreamer Direct-to-Disc Session The third release from Night Dreamer’s essential “Direct-to-Disc” sessions LP sees an incredible meeting between legendary US saxophonist Gary Bartz and leading UK spiritual jazz ensemble, Maisha, featuring two Bartz classics and three brand new joint songs written by both Bartz & Maisha in close collaboration.

Having cut his teeth playing with the likes of Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Art Blakey and finally in 1970, at the peak of his electric period, Gary Bartz became a leading figure of the early-to-mid 70s spiritual jazz movement, releasing a string of ground-breaking albums on legendary NYC jazz label Prestige Records with his NTU Troop, featuring classics such as “Celestial Blues”, “Uhuru Dance” and “I’ve Release Date: 5-Jun-20 Known Rivers”, before collaborating on Blue Note Records with the Mizell [Light In The Attic / Night Dreamer] Brothers on the anthemic jazz funk of “Music Is My Sanctuary”. An oeuvre LP / Y97622 / 0745125277974 / $31.00 much loved by soul jazzers and hip hop fans alike.

Led by drummer Jake Long, Maisha have been central to the UK’s jazz explosion, and have fast become the UK’s most exciting and in-demand young spiritual jazz ensemble, from steller shows at Jazz re:freshed, Total Refreshment Centre & Church of Sound and supporting the Arkestra, to releasing their critically acclaimed debut LP, “There Is A Place” on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings in 2018. Theirs is an organic & explosive sound that blends influences from afrobeat and broken beat to Persian music, with a deep love and understanding of jazz, particularly the heritage of spiritual jazz led by titans such as Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and of course, Gary Bartz.

Which makes this collaboration even more special. Bartz was first invited to share a stage with Maisha by Gilles Peterson to headline the inaugural We Out Here festival. Their chemistry was rich and instantaneous, certainly a two-way street, with the young musicians reinvigorating the legend’s performance and wowing the intergenerational festival audience. A European tour followed, including a London Jazz Festival highlight at the Royal Festival Hall, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his album “Another Earth”, originally featuring fellow legends, Pharoah Sanders, Charles Tolliver, Stanley Cowell, and John Coltrane’s own bassist, Reggie Workman.

Now the relationship has evolved into a special straight-to-disc recording for Night Dreamer Records, that captures the vitality of their collaboration. Whilst Bartz and Maisha reinvent classic Bartz compositions “Uhuru Sasa” and “Dr Follows Dance”, extending the pieces into long piece improvised grooves, their recording session gave birth to three brand new joint compositions, written the very same day. These include the propulsive “Leta’s Dance” that magically combines the Bartz’ soulful musical lyricism with Maisha’s African-jazz influences, and the organic jazz funk of “Harlem to Haarlem”, featuring a hot solo from guest trumpeterAxel Kaner-Lidstrom of Cykada & Levitation Orchestra fame.

Like previous Night Dreamer efforts from afrobeat star Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, and the beautiful collaboration between Brazilian stars Seu Jorge & Rogê, the album was recorded in Haarlem’s Artone Studio, a stones throw from Amsterdam, in just one-take, straight-to- disc, avoiding post- production embellishments and retaining the purity of the performance lost in modern recording techniques.

This record really is an event, in and of itself, a meeting of talents, minds, generations and zeitgeist moments, captured in a unique and pure manner. The music does not disappoint, as Maisha have been inspired to reach new heights whilst we find Bartz truly reinvigorated, and both artists in tune to the spirit of the other. Charlie Chaplin is best known as a silent movie star, but he was one of CHAPLIN, CHARLIE the few who made a successful transition to “talkies”, and also became Modern Times a prolific and inventive composer of soundtrack music. An article on CharlieChaplin.com claims: LP “…the pinnacle of his composing career is most assuredly the complex and innovative score to Modern Times (1935-36). It marks a vast mental and practical leap from his previous score to City Lights made up of primarily dance-band forces of fewer than 30 musicians, to the symphonic proportions of 64 players as required by Modern Times. This decision was not so much due to many a composer’s inherent taste for ego-driven sound power, as is so often is the case for new composers who, upon hearing their work for the first time, are allured by the mere numbers, but rather it was a conscious choice warranted by the film itself. The thematic imagery of Modern Times would provide a complex array of symphonic Release Date: 5-Jun-20 ideas to any composer, but no more so than to the man who created them [Light In The Attic / Strickly Limited Edition Record in the first place”. Company] LP / BSGZ109LP / 5056083202294 / $32.69

Even though by the mid-‘50s he’d already established himself as a multi- KING COLE, NAT talented entertainer, this collection of piano-centric instrumentals would be The Essential Works – 1943-1955 the first full-length long-player that Nat King Cole issued during his two- plus decades on Capitol Records. Released in 1956, the appropriately 2LP titled The Piano Style of Nat King Cole contains a whopping (by mid-’50s standards at least) 16 tracks. Half of the material finds the artist supported by a large band and the other with a warm, cozy string section. And making a great thing almost sinful is that the entire effort is orchestrated and conducted by the peerless Nelson Riddle.

True to the nature of artist and arranger alike, the project is filled with traditional pop tunes straight out of the Great American Songbook. While the melodies are familiar, each is given a unique sonic stamp. Gershwin’s “Love Walked In” provides nothing short of a sublime start as Cole trades elegant leads with the lushly appointed backing ensemble. By contrast, Release Date: 5-Jun-20 “My Heart Stood Still” bursts forth bearing a joyous jazzy groove that can [Light In The Attic / Masters of Jazz] barely be contained within Cole’s blissful runs up and down the ivories. 2LP / MOJ108 / 3760300310915 / $33.53 Once again mellowing the tempo is the classy and romantic refinement of a simmering “Imagination,” which melts beneath the delicate drizzle of Cole’s keys. This stylistic compromise continues as the friskier and decidedly upbeat “I Never Knew,” “I Didn’t Know What Time It Was,” and “Taking a Chance on Love” perfectly temper the tender yet impassioned “April in Paris” and “I See Your Face Before Me.” Likewise, the sultry blues “If I Could Be with You (One Hour Tonight)” should not be missed. The frenetic “I Want to Be Happy” and equally energetic “Just One of Those Things” stand out from the rest. Cole nimbly reels off some of his most accomplished keyboarding to date, all the while guiding the big band into a spirited musical repartee. Lindsay Planer/AMG NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

• Haitian traditions meet electronics CHOUK BWA Vodou Ale In 2016, haitian voodoo band Chouk Bwa and electronic production duo The Angströmers united to form Chouk Bwa & The Angströmers. CD Chouk Bwa play traditional Haitian music; they would fit in the “Mizik Rasin” genre, alongside bands like Boukman Eksperyans, Boukan Ginen or Rasin Mapou from Azor. However, until their decisive encounter with LP The Angströmers, their most characteristic feature was their loyalty to the essential elements of Voodoo – therefore without any instrumental addition.

Chouk Bwa was born in 2012 in the Gonaïves under the impulsion of singer and Samba (keeper of the tradition and moral figure in the voodoo culture) Jean Claude “Sambaton” Dorvil. Release Date: 5-Jun-20 [Light In The Attic / Bongo Joe] Initially the band’s full name was Chouk Bwa Libète, which can be CD / BJR052CD / 7640159732525 / $17.19 translated by “Liberty’s roots”, a reference to the famous shout uttered LP / BJR052LP / 7640159731528 / $29.31 by Toussaint Louverture, an artisan of the Haitian revolution, who died in captivity at Fort de Doubs in 1803: “By overturning me, only the trunk of the tree of liberty fell in Santo Domingo, but it will grow again for its roots are deep and numerous”.

Following their meeting with Belgian musician Michel Wolteche in 2012, the band starts an international career that leads them to a selection for a showcase at the WOMEX 2015 and that will make them tour in more than 10 european countries (playing shows notably at the WOMAD Charlton Park, Roskilde Festival, Førde Festivalen), as well as in Malaysia (Rainforest World Music Festival), Canada (Sunfest, Vancouver Folk Festival, Calgary Folk Festival) and the USA (Savannah Music Festival). In 2015, their first album, Se nou ki la!, is released on Buda Musique.

Chouk Bwa’s music combines multiple characteristic Voodoo elements: rhythms, dances and chants. These are the roots, removed from Africa and secretly replanted in a new earth. The percussionists, going from one rhythm (and therefore one cultural reference) to another, act as collective memory smugglers, and their instruments are the material demonstration of this diversity. The dance is neither aesthetic nor premeditated, it is real; it is not about a “show” or a “choregraphy” but rather about a connexion with the drums’ spirits. On top of this, the singer’s voice ascends effortlessly above the instrumentation, which also includes bamboos and lanbi.

The setlist during a show is made up of original compositions by Sambaton as well as traditional songs rearranged by the band. As a fervent homage to the Lwa pantheon, the entire repertoire is sustained by the voodoo mystic, and throughout a song, it is sometimes the Haitian farmers’ voices, in their daily struggle for survival, that express themselves by narrating scenes of life, sometimes with the impatience of a political speech.

The singularity of this music lies in the fact that it offers a “material” very close to ceremonial music (without any significant addition) and organizes it and, in a way, concentrates it in a shape that gives it an powerful impact, accessible to a large public, however without ever distorting nor polishing it. The Angströmers, an electronic music duo consisting of Nicolas Esterle and Frédéric Alstadt, constitute one of the artistic emanations of the label The Angströmers.

Founded in Toulouse in 1998, the label organizes events, co-produces cine-concerts with the Toulouse film library and produces one or two albums per year. In 2007 the structure is refounded in Belgium, and starts concentrating its activity on the mastering studio and the label. Following the premature death of one of the founding members near the end of 2008, the label is put on standby, and only a few albums continue to get released episodically. The studio becomes a well-known actor of the alternative Belgian scene, specialized in vinyl mastering.

As musicians, certainly fed by their engagement in the label and the mastering, The Angströmers spread their music full of bass and echos, influenced by dub and , all over the underground European stages. All along their encounter with the voodoo culture, they learn to expand their sound by immersing themselves into complex polyrhythms. They develop an electronic psychedelic music, free of all the codes of binary, 4/4 standards that dominate the club world. NEW RELEASES: MAY - JUNE 2020

• A “cool” spirit relying on syncopated and relaxed rhythms VARIOUS ARTISTS Jazz Bossa Nova At the end of the Fifties, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and João Gilberto breathed a new sensitivity into the atmosphere of Rio 2LP de Janeiro: they introduced samba rhythms into the city’s tristeza and felicidade. A new kind of music was born, one that bore a relationship to spleen, a kind of moody feeling, yet it showed glimmers of hope that mingled with a “cool” spirit relying on syncopated and relaxed rhythms.

New winds began to blow over the music of Brazil. All that was needed were a few albums from Rio (such as Chega de Saudade by Joao Gilberto), the film Orfeo Negro directed by Marcel Camus (it received the Palme d’Or Award at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival), plus the curiosity of a dozen American jazz musicians, for Bossa Nova to become a music style that would completely dominate the first half of the Sixties. Release Date: 12-Jun-20 [Light In The Attic / Masters of Jazz] The sincerity of Brazil’s music, of course, seemed eclipsed inside 2LP / MOJ109 / 3760300310953 / $33.53 American arrangements whose subtleties were still hesitant in 1962, but the contribution of Bossa Nova to the jazz of that period could not be ignored. Jazz owes its richness to the vitality of the exchanges between its musicians, even if some people saw the Bossa Nova played in New York as taking a too northerly direction, or being too “American”. But listening to these four sides — recorded in the space of just four years — reveals how much those exchanges made jazz music even richer.
