Über Stationen an der Deutschen Oper Berlin, Gelsenkirchen, Karlsruhe, Hannover und Düsseldorf kam er 1988 als Gene- ralmusikdirektor nach Nürnberg. 1997 kehrte der gebürtige D Berliner in seine Heimatstadt als Generalmusikdirektor der Deutschen Oper Berlin zurück, bevor er das gleiche Amt von 2004 bis 2011 bei den Münchner Philharmonikern innehatte. Neben seiner Dresdner Chefpo- sition ist er seit 2013 Künstlerischer Leiter der Osterfestspiele Salzburg, deren Residenzorchester die Staatskapelle ist. Intensiv widmete er sich den Komponistenjubilaren Wagner und Strauss. Aber auch Werke von Bach und Henze, Rihm und Gubaidulina dirigierte er am Pult der Staats- kapelle Dresden. Zudem leitete er Neuproduktionen u. a. von »Manon Lescaut«, »Elektra« und »Der Freischütz«. Bei den Osterfestspielen Salz- burg dirigierte er u. a. »Parsifal«, »Arabella«, »Otello« und »Die Walküre«. Eine enge Zusammenarbeit verbindet ihn mit den Berliner und Wiener Philharmonikern sowie mit den Bayreuther Festspielen, die er seit seinem Debüt im Sommer 2000 (»Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«) alljährlich durch maßstabsetzende Interpretationen prägt. Von 2010 an war er musikalischer Berater auf dem »Grünen Hügel«, im Jahr 2015 wurde er zum Musikdirektor der Festspiele ernannt. Im Zuge seiner viel- fältigen Konzerttätigkeit folgte er Einladungen der großen Orchester in Amsterdam, London, New York, Chicago und Philadelphia und gastierte außerdem in Israel, Japan und China. Christian Thielemanns Diskographie als Exklusivkünstler der UNITEL ist umfangreich. Zu seinen jüngsten Einspielungen mit der Staatskapelle zählen u. a. die Aufnahmen der Symphonien Nr. 3 und 4 von Anton Bruckner sowie die Symphonien und Solokonzerte von Johannes Brahms. Mit den Wiener Philharmonikern legte er eine Gesamteinspie- lung der Symphonien Beethovens vor. Er ist Ehrenmitglied der Royal Academy of Music in London sowie Ehrendoktor der Hochschule für Musik »Franz Liszt« Weimar und der Katholischen Universität Leuven (Belgien). 2015 erhielt er den Richard-Wagner-Preis der Richard-Wagner-Gesell- schaft der Stadt Leipzig. Im Herbst 2017 wurde sein Vertrag als Chef- dirigent der Staatskapelle Dresden bis 2024 verlängert. 8 9 SILVESTERKONZERT Angela Denoke Sopran ür die großen Frauenrollen von Richard Strauss und Richard Wagner ist Angela Denoke eine weltweit gefragte Sängerin. Doch schon seit Kindheitstagen hegt sie ein großes Faible für die Operette. Geboren in Stade, studierte sie im nahen Hamburg an der Hochschule für Musik und Theater. Sie F begann ihre Karriere als Ensemblemitglied in Ulm und Stuttgart. 1997 gastierte sie als Marie in Alban Bergs Oper »Wozzeck« erstmals bei den Salzburger Festspielen und debütierte an der Wiener Staatsoper im »Rosenkavalier« von Richard Strauss als Marschallin. Mit dieser Partie trat sie 2000 auch in der Dresdner Semperoper sowie 2005 in der Metro- politan Opera in New York auf. Neben der Marschallin gehört Emilia Marty aus »Die Sache Makropulos« von Leoš Janáček zu ihren Parade- rollen. 2009 gab Angela Denoke damit an der Mailänder Scala ihr Debüt – ein Auftritt, der dort ebenso umjubelt wurde wie 2011 in Salzburg. 1999 wurde sie von der Zeitschrift Opernwelt zur Sängerin des Jahres gewählt, 2007 gewann sie den Deutschen Theaterpreis »Der Faust« für ihre Interpretation der »Salome« von Richard Strauss. 2009 wurde sie zur Österreichischen Kammersängerin ernannt. Zudem ist sie Mitglied der Freien Akademie der Künste Hamburg. Sie gastiert an den führenden Opernhäusern weltweit, u. a. an der Covent Garden Opera, der Bayerischen Staatsoper München, der Semperoper, dem Gran Teatre del Liceu, der Opéra national de Paris, dem Théâtre du Châtelet Paris, der Staatsoper Berlin, an der Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam sowie am Teatro Real Madrid. Darüber hinaus arbeitet sie mit Dirigenten wie Daniel Barenboim, Zubin Mehta, Ingo Metzma- cher, Kent Nagano, Seiji Ozawa, Mikhail Pletnev, Sir Simon Rattle, Donald Runnicles, Esa-Pekka Salonen und Christian Thielemann. Angela Denoke hat zahlreiche CDs aufgenommen, darunter Richard Wagners »Die Walküre« und »Fidelio« von Ludwig van Beethoven. Angela Denoke widmet sich aber nicht nur dem klassischen Repertoire. Mit ihrem Jazz- und Liedprogramm »Von Babelsberg bis Beverly Hills«, in dem sie die Ära von Marlene Dietrich und Zarah Leander feiert, machte sie u. a. an den Opernhäusern von München, Berlin, Barcelona,

Over the generations there have been collaborations with musicians of distinction, among them Leonhard Lechner, the Frobergers, Niccolò Jommelli, Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg, Konradin Kreutzer, of Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Carl Maria von Weber. Berlioz praised the orchestra, when he appeared with it as Der Ring des Nibelungen conductor, and in the 1880s Stuttgart was one of the first to stage the complete Ring cycle, conducted by the then (The Ring of the Nibelung) General Music Director Herman Zumpe, who had assisted Wagner at the first Bayreuth Festival.

When undertaking our work, Allan and I were aware of the work started by Ted Fa- gan and Bill Moran, in which they intended to account for every recording made by the Victor Talking Machine Company. We decided to take on what we believed was a more practical approach, one that best met the needs of record collectors.
