The aim is to increase the aware- ness of the importance of diacritics, their design and use. The design of the low- ercase dcroat letter presents a particular problem, because it is present only in the Croatian and Vietnamese script and is therefore often incorrectly designed or it is missing the respective font. Data on the most common methods of shaping and positioning of this diacritical sign was collected by measuring the geometry of the dcroat letter in various fonts. Most common designers’ mistakes were shown and evaluated. Suggestions for the design of diacritical marks are proposed taking into account asymmetry, width, uppercase, vertical and horizontal positioning and cul- tural preferences. The Brill Typeface User Guide & Complete List of Characters Version 2.06, October 31, 2014 Pim Rietbroek Preamble Few typefaces – if any – allow the user to access every Latin character, every IPA character, every diacritic, and to have these combine in a typographically satisfactory manner, in a range of styles (roman, italic, and more); even fewer add full support for Greek, both modern and ancient, with specialised characters that papyrologists and epigraphers need; not to mention coverage of the Slavic languages in the Cyrillic range. The Brill typeface aims to do just that, and to be a tool for all scholars in the humanities; for Brill’s authors and editors; for Brill’s staff and service providers; and finally, for anyone in need of this tool, as long as it is not used for any commercial gain.* There are several fonts in different styles, each of which has the same set of characters as all the others. The Unicode Standard is rigorously adhered to: there is no dependence on the Private Use Area (PUA), as it happens frequently in other fonts with regard to characters carrying rare diacritics or combinations of diacritics. Instead, all alphabetic characters can carry any diacritic or combination of diacritics, even stacked, with automatic correct positioning. This is made possible by the inclusion of all of Unicode’s combining characters and by the application of extensive OpenType Glyph Positioning programming. Synthetic Study of Marine Polycyclic Ethers: Total Synthesis of Hemibrevetoxin B Tadashi Nakata The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) Abstract: Two efficient methods for the synthesis of the cyclic ethers, the important fundamental components of marine polycyclic ethers, were developed: (1) rearrangement-ring expansion reaction and (2) endo-cyclization of hydroxy styrylepoxide. Based on the newly developed methods, stereoselective total synthesis of hemibrevetoxin B (2) has been completed. 1. Introduction The brevetoxins, represented by brevetoxin B (1), are potent neurotoxins produced by the red tide organism Gymnodium breve and constitute an important class of marine polycyclic ethers. Their biological activities are exerted by activating sodium channels and causing repetitive firing in neurons. Since brevertoxin B (1) was isolated as a red tide toxin in 1981 (ref. 1), a number of marine polycyclic ethers has also been reported; hemibrevetoxin B (2), whose molecular size is about half that of brevetoxin B, was isolated as the smallest member (ref. 2) and, recently, maitotoxin (3) was reported as Brevetoxin B (1) Hemibrevetoxin B (2) Partial Structure of Maitotoxin (3) 940 ( 76 ) J.
