Before the construction of the wastewater treatment and recycling plants, urban wastewater was collected by a grid of small streams and canals, particularly the Northern and Southern Lambro River and discharged by the Po River to the Adriatic Sea. In the Ancient Roman era, an early land reclamation process was initiated by means of large marshes to protect the fertile territories in the so-called low plains from floods . Later, in the Middle Age, the various monasteries, as customary throughout Europe, particularly Cistercian monks, started to build an irrigation network for the lowlands. The Cistercian community from Chiaravalle (Figure 2) constructed the first elements of the current irrigation ditch network BUSAN KOREA World water congress 16-21 26 September 2012 Roberto Mazzini Thanks you for the kind attention [email protected] www.depuratorenosedo.eu BUSAN KOREA World water congress 16-21 27 September 2012 .
