En esta historia hubo un poco de suerte porque encontre´ un grupo muy agradable, aqu´ı en Barcelona. En este pequeno˜ punto en la tierra muchas cosas de mi vida han cambiado, incluso algunas ideas. Aun´ recuerdo mi primera entrevista con Toni, que nervios y luego todo calma en un lugar que parec´ıa mas´ que un centro de investigacion´ un hotel con vista al mar. No puedo mentir, la ubicacion´ del centro fue una de las primeras cosas que me impresionaron. Desde esa primera entrevista, yo supe que Toni era una persona sencilla y amable y que yo quer´ıa trabajar con el.´ Muchas gracias Toni por toda la paciencia que has tenido conmigo durante todo este per´ıodo. Abstract The olive tree (Olea europaea, Oleaceae) is an iconic plant of Mediter- ranean countries for cultural, historical and biological reasons. The olive species comprises six subspecies (europaea, maroccana, cerasiformis, laperrinei, guanchica, and cuspidata) that together form the so-called O. europaea com- plex. Likewise, the subsp. europaea is divided into two taxonomic varieties: var. europaea, that comprises all the cultivated forms, and var. sylvestris (also called oleaster), that includes the wild forms. The olive tree has been inten- sively cultivated since 6,000 years ago, coinciding with the emergence of early Mediterranean civilizations. Because of the interest of the drupes both as table olives and as raw material to produce olive oil, the olive tree is an es- sential crop across the Mediterranean basin. This doctoral thesis aims to pro- vide insights into the biology and the evolution of the cultivated olive and relatives. To this end, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated a reference genome obtained from a single individual (O. europaea L. var. europaea). Phy- logenomic analysis and assessment of allelic relative coverage suggest up to four polyploidization events in the evolutionary history of the olive. Two an- cient allopolyploidization events at the base of the family Oleaceae (Eocene- Late Cretaceous), and the tribe Oleeae (Oligocene-Miocene), followed by two polyploidizations in the ancestor of O. europaea (Miocene-Pliocene) since its divergence from Phillyrea angustifolia. In order to study the diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the O. europaea complex, we additionally se- quenced the genome of at least one individual per subspecies. Our results show that cultivated olive trees exhibit less nucleotide diversity when com- pared with wild relatives. Different sets of genes were found to be under positive selection in each cultivar included in this study (‘Arbequina’, ‘Be- ladi’, ‘Farga’, ‘Picual’, ‘Sorani’). In addition to hybridization involving poly- ploidization (allopolyploidization), phylogenomic analysis revealed exten- sive homoploid hybridization among lineages of the O. europaea complex, xiii xiv which results in a continuous gene flow from wild to domesticated olive trees. In particular, cv. ‘Farga’ has a different origin than the other culti- vars included in this study, and shows evidence for secondary domestica- tion events in the Iberian Peninsula. In summary, this study helps unravel the evolutionary history of O. europaea, and uncover a complex scenario of polyploidization and hybridization that resulted in recurrent gene duplica- tions.

Although many studies have been performed on plastid polymorphisms to evaluate taxonomy, phylogeny and phylogeography of Olea subspecies, only few polymorphic regions discriminating among the agronomically and economically important olive cultivars have been identified. The objective of this study was to sequence the entire plastome of olive and analyze many potential polymorphic regions to develop new inter-cultivar genetic markers. Results: The complete plastid genome of the olive cultivar Frantoio was determined by direct sequence analysis using universal and novel PCR primers designed to amplify all overlapping regions. The chloroplast genome of the olive has an organisation and gene order that is conserved among numerous Angiosperm species and do not contain any of the inversions, gene duplications, insertions, inverted repeat expansions and gene/intron losses that have been found in the chloroplast genomes of the genera Jasminum and Menodora, from the same family as Olea. The annotated sequence was used to evaluate the content of coding genes, the extent, and distribution of repeated and long dispersed sequences and the nucleotide composition pattern. These analyses provided essential information for structural, functional and comparative genomic studies in olive plastids. Furthermore, the alignment of the olive plastome sequence to those of other varieties and species identified 30 new organellar polymorphisms within the cultivated olive.

The Mediterranean Basin is one of the 36 world biodiversity hotspots, and it is estimated that forests covered 82% of the landscape before the first human impacts, thousands of years ago. However, the spatial distribution of the Mediterranean biodiversity is still imperfectly known, and a focus on tree species constitutes a key issue for understanding forest functioning and develop conservation strategies. Methods: We provide the first comprehensive checklist of all native tree taxa (species and subspecies) present in the Mediterranean-European region (from Portugal to Cyprus). We identified some cases of woody species difficult to categorize as trees that we further called “cryptic trees”. We collected the occurrences of tree taxa by “administrative regions”, i.e. country or large island, and by biogeographical provinces. We studied the species-area relationship, and evaluated the conservation issues for threatened taxa following IUCN criteria. Results: We identified 245 tree taxa that included 210 species and 35 subspecies, belonging to 33 families and 64 genera. It included 46 endemic tree taxa (30 species and 16 subspecies), mainly distributed within a single biogeographical unit.

    STUDIES ON THE TRICHOMES OF SOME OLEACEAE, STRUCTURE AND ONTOGENY B~ J. A. ABSTRACT Some twelve types of tricho~aes are described for four species of Jasminum and Nyctanthes arbor-tristis L. They fall under two main categories, the eglandular and the glandular trichomes. The systematic position of Nyctanthes seems to be quite natural in the family Oleaceae. INTRODUCTION The family Oleaceae has received considerable attention of the botanists particularly with reference to the systcmatic position of Nyctanthes and the monotypic genus Dimetra. Airy SEaw (1952) transferred these gcnera to the Verbenaceae on morphological grounds. Stant (1952) has supported Airy Shaw on anatomical grounds. Johnson (1957) in a review of the family Oleaceae opined that Nyctanthes should be excluded from Oleaceae based on the cytological findings of Taylor (1945). On the other hand the embryo- logical data (Patel, 1963; Kapil, 1967) suggests that Nyctanthes should be retained in the Oleaceae. Several workers (De Bary, 1884; Cowan, 1950, Goodspeed, 1954; Carlquist, 1958, 1959a, 1959b, 1959c, 1961; Mathur, 1961 ; Ramayya, 1962 a, 1962b, 1963) have described the structure and development of trichomes and glands in several angisoperm families. The present investi- gation was carried out to find if the trichomes ~nd glands could be of any help in settling the doubtful systematic position of Oleaceous genera. [email protected] ABSTRACT: In this note, I document two previously unreported, spontane- ous and exceptionally rare phenotypic expressions affecting reproductive traits in adult plants of the Mediterranean genus Phillyrea (Oleaceae): (i) a morph with an abnormally elongated stigma and lobes transformed in two long branches (i.e. deeper-stigma phenotype), detected in a population of Phillyrea latifolia L. from NE Spain, and (ii) a morph with fruits lacking anthocyanins (i.e. colourless-fruit phenotype), in a population of Phillyrea angustifolia L. from SW Spain. Both phenotypes occurred at a very low frequency within their respective populations. Despite this, the novel traits acquired are discussed in an eco-evolutionary con- text, revealing their potential use as a study model, limited but suggestive, to test adaptive hypothesis in natural conditions. Keywords: phenotypic expression; adaptive value; anemophilous syndrome; selection mediated by frugivorous birds.
