In 1974, capoeira was declared the national sport of Brazil. Today capoeira academies and competitions may be found wherever Brazilian culture is celebrated and communicated in many major foreign cities. My thesis, through the participant/observer method and the use of long interviews, examines capoeira as it is practiced in one particular academy far from the art form’s place of origin. In the tradition of the cultural studies branch of communication, my thesis analyzes the movements, manners, and fashions of capoeira. I conclude that capoeira constitutes a cultural communication that has evolved from its roots in human slavery, suffering, and rebelliousness to a modern-day expression of athleticism, art, and ................................................................................................................. 59 iii INTRODUCTION Capoeira, an indigenous Brazilian martial art, has been preserved through four centuries as a cultural artifact, and has been passed down through dozens of generations of Brazilians who practice its rapid kicking, spinning, sweeping, and flipping movements. Capoeira can be traced to the Sixteenth Century and the Portuguese occupation of Brazil, when men among the enslaved local population began to choreograph precise movements as a charade of combat in preparation for possibly fighting their oppressors. Brazil’s occupiers and colonizers – and later even its constitutional government – regarded capoeira warily as subversion, however, and it remained outlawed into the 1930s. As laws forbidding its practice and performance were relaxed, capoeira masters, or mestres, began teaching it legally and brought it to the outside world, and its popularity has increased greatly during the past fifty years as it has spread globally. In 1974, capoeira achieved status in Brazil as the official national sport. Today capoeira academies and competitions are found in major cities across the Americas and in Europe and Asia, too. Its status as a national sport immediately categorizes capoeira as a martial art, and such is its historical origin. Its status as a martial art implies that capoeira still represents a form of fighting, but as a non-contact sport. Its performance as a dance or movement accompanied by music presents capoeira as an art form. And its global representation of things Brazilian suggest it as cultural signifier. As modern ritual, what cultural remnants endure and are communicated? This thesis, which culminates my six years of interest in and knowledge about capoeira, constitutes a cultural study of capoeira as communicative act. This study employs participation-observation and interviews to examine and analyze 1 capoeira’s movements, its manners, its fashion, and even its physical environment – the public and private spaces in which it may be found in one city outside Brazil. This thesis addresses these research questions: (a) What does capoeira communicate about Brazilian culture and history? (b) What symbolic meanings exist in capoeira for practitioners and are communicated between them and among them? The aims of this study were to present the structure of the Brazilian sport policies and the quality of actions in high performance sport policies. The actions were compared with other countries in an international research called “Sports Policy Factors Leading to International Sporting Success”. The results indicated the existence of finan- cial resources, but the strategic planning and integration in the Brazilian high perfor- mance sport policies are deficient.

While methodological procedure this is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach. With regard to data collection instruments was used to document analysis. Regarding the theoretical framework, we have listed up the Frey studies (2000) and Boschetti (2009) about the public policy analysis process. Thus, it became clear that the current financial structure in the system in question, favors high performance sport in detritus other sports dimensions. Keywords: Sport, Leisure, Management, Finance. INTRODUCTION Think the sport in Brazil provides a series of reflections in different contexts, among which are the sports funding. Thus, it is believed that such a factor, it is essential to give life to the actions designed under national sports policy. However, it noted the complexity involved in this issue, given that there is a field of dispute between the sporting and political sector, which presents a conflict of interest with regard to social agents involved in that case [1].

Mason ABSTRACT In the port-cities of Brazil during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a distinct form of combat- dancing emerged from the interaction of African, European and indigenous peoples. The acrobatic movements and characteristic music of this art have come to be called Capoeira. Today, the art of Capoeira has grown in popularity and groups of practitioners can be found scattered across the globe. Exploring how Capoeira practitioners invent markers of difference between separate groups, the first section of this article discusses musical markers of identity that reinforce in-group and out- group dynamics. At a separate but interconnected level of analysis, the second section investigates the global origins of Capoeira movement and disambiguates the commonly recounted origin myths promoted by teachers and scholars of this art. Practitioners frequently relate stories promoting the African origins of Capoeira. However, these stories obfuscate the global origins of Capoeira music and movement and conceal the various contributions to this vibrant and eclectic form of cultural ex- pression.

    Dancing Through Difficulties: Capoeira as a Fight Against Oppression by Sara da Conceição Capoeira is difficult to define. It is an African form of physical, spiritual, and cultural expression. It is an Afro-Brazilian martial art. It is a dance, a fight, a game, an art form, a mentality, an identity, a sport, an African ritual, a worldview, a weapon, and a way of life, among other things. Sometimes it is all of these things at once, sometimes it isn’t. It can be just a few of them or something different altogether. Capoeira is considered a “game” not a “fight” or a “match,” and the participants “play” rather than “fight” against each other. There are no winners or losers. It is dynamic and fluid: there is no true beginning or end to the game of capoeira. In perhaps the most widely recognized and referenced book dealing with capoeira, Ring of Liberation: Deceptive Discourse in Brazilian Capoeira, J. Lowell Lewis attempts to orient the reader with a fact-based, straightforward description of this blurred cultural genre: A game or sport played throughout Brazil (and elsewhere in the world) today, which was originally part of the Afro-Brazilian folk tradition. It is a martial art, involving a complete system of self-defense, but it also has a dance-like, acrobatic movement style which, combined with the presence of music and song, makes the games into a kind of performance that attracts many kinds of spectators, both tourists and locals. (xxiii) An outsider experiencing capoeira for the first time would undoubtedly assert that the “game” is a spectacular, impressive, and peculiar sight, due to its graceful and spontaneous integration of fighting techniques with dance, music, and unorthodox acrobatic movements.

The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding.

Forrest-Blincoe is a 4th dan black belt master in Tang Soo Do which he has studied in the United States and Korea. He has also studied Taekkyon in South Korea.1 During this time, he has been interested in the official histories of these martial arts in contrast with documented histories (which often differ significantly). Both Forrest and Forrest-Blincoe are trained anthropologists. Forrest specializes in symbols and national identity, and has published extensively on the anthropology of movement and dance. Problem and Aim. The martial arts Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, and Taekkyon have competed within Korea for some time to rep- resent Korean culture, and Korea has used martial arts as an export as one component in its drive to gain legitimacy as a world power competitive with its more powerful neighbors of China and Japan. A case study analysis of German and Brazilian soccer exemplifies how cultural elements shape, influence, and intersect with playing style. Eight signature elements of playing style are determined: tactics, technique, body image, concept of soccer, values, tradition, ecological and a miscellaneous category. Each of these elements is then extrapolated for Germany and Brazil, setting up a comparative binary. Literature analysis further reinforces this contrasting comparison. Both history of the country and the sport history of the country are necessary determinants when considering style, as style must be historically situated when being discussed in order to avoid stereotypification. Historic time lines of significant German and Brazilian style changes are determined and interpretated.
