Richard Marin 1995, BRAZIL’S ZUMBI YEAR: REFLECTIONS ON A TRICENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION In 1995, the Brazilian commemorations in honor of the tricentennial of the death of Zumbi, the legendary leader of the large maroon community of Palmares, took on every appearance of a genuine social phenomenon. The Black Movement and part of Brazilian civil society, but also the public authorities, each in different ways, were all committed to marking the event with exceptional grandeur. This article advances a perspective on this commemorative year as an important step in promoting the "Black question" along with Afro-Brazilian identity. After describing the 1995 commemorations, we aim to show how they represented the culmination of already-existing movements that had been at work in the depths of Brazilian society. We will finish by considering the period following the events of 1995, during which "the Black question" becomes truly central to debates in Brazilians society. -

Mason ABSTRACT In the port-cities of Brazil during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a distinct form of combat- dancing emerged from the interaction of African, European and indigenous peoples. The acrobatic movements and characteristic music of this art have come to be called Capoeira. Today, the art of Capoeira has grown in popularity and groups of practitioners can be found scattered across the globe. Exploring how Capoeira practitioners invent markers of difference between separate groups, the first section of this article discusses musical markers of identity that reinforce in-group and out- group dynamics. At a separate but interconnected level of analysis, the second section investigates the global origins of Capoeira movement and disambiguates the commonly recounted origin myths promoted by teachers and scholars of this art. Practitioners frequently relate stories promoting the African origins of Capoeira. However, these stories obfuscate the global origins of Capoeira music and movement and conceal the various contributions to this vibrant and eclectic form of cultural ex- pression. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF THE SNAKE: A LIFE HISTORY OF COBRA MANSA “COBRINHA” MESTRE OF CAPOEIRA Isabel Angulo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Directed By: Dr. Jonathan Dueck Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology, School of Music, University of Maryland Professor John Caughey American Studies Department, University of Maryland This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha’s life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition—its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners’ lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa’s storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. -

Capoeira is a complex art with a rich historical trajectory, a full and meaningful cultural context, and contradictory interpretations. To acquire clear and comprehensive information on capoeira requires a significant level of responsibility from both the school and student. In the early seventies, levels of proficiency were established to accommodate students with different goals and time invested in the study of capoeira. Consequently, students will progress through distinct levels in terms of physical and technical capabilities, musical skills, and theoretical knowledge. These levels help students to measure their own progress and to visualize attainable goals. -

Forrest-Blincoe is a 4th dan black belt master in Tang Soo Do which he has studied in the United States and Korea. He has also studied Taekkyon in South Korea.1 During this time, he has been interested in the official histories of these martial arts in contrast with documented histories (which often differ significantly). Both Forrest and Forrest-Blincoe are trained anthropologists. Forrest specializes in symbols and national identity, and has published extensively on the anthropology of movement and dance. Problem and Aim. The martial arts Taekwondo, Tang Soo Do, and Taekkyon have competed within Korea for some time to rep- resent Korean culture, and Korea has used martial arts as an export as one component in its drive to gain legitimacy as a world power competitive with its more powerful neighbors of China and Japan. This paper examines the process of using martial arts as symbols of Korean national identity. -

In addition to being internationally acknowledged as a world-class capoeirista and capoeira instructor, Contramestre Barrãozinho is a recording artist and stunt actor, having performed in various films, TV shows, music videos, and commercials, and done motion-capture for popular video games. He placed second out of 250 competitors in the 2000 International Capoeira Competition in Brazil and has competed in several mixed martial arts (MMA) tournaments, one in which his 20-sec-ond knock-out victory was captured on video and quickly went viral across Youtube and other social media platforms. -

Although some individuals seek and access traditional mental health services, more than half of the individuals who have diagnosable conditions never obtain formal treatment. -

Quilombo A Critical Review of a Brazilian Film Tristán del Canto Summary and Background This paper investigates race and folklore in the Brazilian motion picture Quilombo, a movie about a seventeenth-century maroon slave community in Northeastern Brazil called Quilombo dos Palmares. In this paper, I look at criticism about the movie and how the myth of “racial democracy” is still alive in Quilombo despite the film’s theme of Black resistance to White oppression during slavery. I argue that while Quilombo appears to celebrate Black pride and history, it does not contribute to the alleviation of racial discrimination, poverty and oppression faced by Afro- Brazilians. Quilombo was written and directed by Carlos Diegues, produced by Augusto Arraes and stars Zeze Motta, Antonio Pompeo, Toni Tornado, Antonio Pitanga, Vera Fischer, Mauricio Do Valle and Grande Otelo; it was released in 1984 in color and lasts 119 minutes. Brazilian Slavery and Quilombo dos Palmares Historically, Brazil imported more slaves (3.6 million) than any other country in the Americas and was the last colony to abolish slavery in 1888 (Telles 2004:25). Many quilombos (runaway slave communities), large-scale revolts and resistance heroes developed in response to the harsh nature of Brazil slavery. Quilombo dos Palmares however was the most impressive maroon community in Brazil. It held between 11,000 and 30,000 people and resisted Portuguese, Dutch and Native Brazilian attacks until finally succumbing to the cannons of the Portuguese in 1694-1695 (Reis and Gomes 2006). Even though Quilombo dos Palmares lasted nearly one hundred years, Brazilian 2 colonial authorities preserved little documentation about the community; most recorded information was written by soldiers of fortune that were paid to find and attempt to bring down the settlement.
