Town Trail – Secession Ljubljana
Town Trail – Secession Ljubljana ART NOUVEAU – ART RENOUVEAU 2014–2017 Walk around Art Nouveau Ljubljana, observe buildings typical of this period and answer the questions. You can start your path anywhere you like, but make sure to walk the whole path and collect as many correct answers as possible. Estimated time of the task is 90 minutes. A SECESSION LJUBLJANA The term »Secession« in Slovenia is used following the example ! of the Vienna Secession (in other European countries the terms Art Nouveau, Jugendstil, Modern Style, Liberty, etc. are also used as a name for this period), because in the Art Nouveau period, the Slovenian territory was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and numerous Slovenian artists and architects studied in Vienna. The term » Ljubljana Secession « is a name for the neighbourhood between the old city centre and the main railway station. This neighbourhood was mostly rebuilt between the years of 1895 and 1910. It includes many important and well preserved architectural masterpieces. Secession Ljubljana is one of the most recognisable parts of the city and that part of our cultural heritage which put Ljubljana alongside the biggest Art Nouveau capital cities, such as Brussels, Vienna, Paris, Barcelona. On Easter, 14th of April 1895 at 11.17pm CET time, Ljubljana, with ! its 31,000 citizens and 1,400 buildings, was shaken by a very strong earthquake (its aftershocks were existing all the way to Vienna in Austria, Split in Croatia and Florence in Italy). About 10% of the buildings had to be demolished and all the rest were in need of a restoration. -

INFORMATION Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/2019 Ljubljana Cup 2018, Ljubljana / SLO, 3.10
Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/2019 Ljubljana Cup 2018 October 3 to October 6, 2018 Ljubljana, Slovenia INFORMATION Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2018/2019 Ljubljana Cup 2018, Ljubljana / SLO, 3.10. – 6.10.2018 WELCOME It is a great honor for Slovene Skating Union to host again one of the competitions of ISU Junior Grand Prix. Ljubljana, the Slovene capital, is after two years once more the host of this event. We cordially welcome all the skaters, coaches, judges, officials and the team members from all over the world. THE AREA – THE CITY LJUBLJANA BASICS The capital of the Republic of Slovenia, a European Union member state since 2004 Area: 275 km2 Population: 283,000 Average temperature in January: - 0.3 °C Average temperature in June: 20.7 °C Temperature in the beginning of October: low 10, high 21°C (photo: panoramic view of the city with the castle) HISTORY Legend has it that Ljubljana was founded by the Greek mythological hero Jason and his companions, the Argonauts, who had stolen the Golden Fleece from King Aetes and fled from him across the Black Sea and up the Danube, Sava and Ljubljanica rivers. At a large lake in the marshes near the source of the Ljubljanica they stopped and disassembled their ship to be able to carry it to the Adriatic Sea, put it together again, and return to Greece. The lake was the dwelling place of a monster, which Jason fought, defeated and killed. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower depicted on the Ljubljana coat of arms. -
Dalmatia – a Rough Guide to the Tour
Dalmatia Delights A Rough Guide to the Tour 2 Dalmatia Delights Preface This guide (entirely and unashamedly lifted from other sources, mostly cited) tries to follow the Dalmatian Delights itinerary for the Ferris Wheels tour. Its purpose is to present in one place some highlights of the tour; and, hopefully, save participants from buying several guide books, although there is at least one book (Western Balkans, Lonely Planet) that covers a lot but not all of the itinerary. First, a little introduction to Dalmatia. As I noted on my Dalmatia page, the term is a loose way of referring, partly to Dalmacija, a region in Croatia, but then, loosely, to surrounding regions spanning coast, hinterland and mountains in parts of Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and, for good measure, the Passo di Stelvio in the Italian Dolomites. So don’t get too hung up on the name. More strictly speaking, Dalmatia (Croatian: Dalmacija), is an historical region on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and is situated in Croatia. It spreads between the island of Rab in the northwest and the Bay of Kotor, in Montenegro, in the southeast. The hinterland, the Dalmatian Zagora, ranges from fifty kilometers in width in the north to just a few kilometers in the south. The Dalmatian dog gets its name from Dalmatia. In antiquity the Roman province of Dalmatia was much larger than the present-day region, stretching from Istria to historical Albania. Dalmatia signified not only a geographical unit, but it was an entity based on common culture and settlement types. Secondly, Dalmatia came before the dog! The dog got its name from its association with Dalmatia. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by University of Washington: ResearchWorks Journal Hosting Slovene Studies 32.1–2 (2010): 19–42 VALENTIN VODNIK, “THE FIRST SLOVENIAN POET”: THE POLITICS OF INTERPRETATIONS Božidar Jezernik Each generation in its own way weighs up and measures the past according to contemporary outlooks in order to give shape to the future. Views of the past and of the future are constantly being modified, supplemented, and adjusted from generation to generation. It is, therefore, inevitable that leaders and prophets take on new personal characteristics and that their reputations change, falling and rising (Gspan 1958: 146). Thus, over the past two centuries, the image of Valentin Vodnik has undergone radical change in accordance with prevailing political conditions. Interpretations of Vodnik’s poetry have also varied with changing political circumstances. This is particularly true of his ode to Napoleon, which he published in his Pismenost (Literacy) of 1811. The poem “Illyria Revived” does not represent the peak of Vodnik’s poetic creativity, nor—in the assessment of Ivan Prijatelj—is it “completely original in its phraseology,” for even the syntagma of “Illyria Revived” had been used by others before him (Prijatelj 1911: 587). It did, however, receive a great response and inspired several generations, each of which read and interpreted it in its own way. “To Make of Our People... Slovenians” The new political groups (nations) that had begun to appear in the nineteenth-century in Europe were so without precedence that their contemporaries had to “invent for them an entire historical continuity” (Hobsbawm and Ranger 1983: 7). -
Sliding Toward Slovenia
Sliding toward Slovenia Exiting Rovinj on the excellent Croatian bus service motoring easily through the green countryside of the Istrian peninsular toward Ljubjlana via Italy requires two border crossings. A form of efficiency Yugo style existed as the Slovenian control demanded all bags be brought outside and opened for inspection even though it was a cursory glance at best. Small glimpses of the coastline are visible and in next to no time the bus was in Trieste which is the connection point for Slovenia. Departure time provides space for a whistlestop tour of the city and escape from the collection of drunks domiciled inside the bus station on their weatherproof sipper seats. Tour du Trieste reveals an atypical Italian city in the dreaded grip of siesta severely limit ing spending capacity but nurturing some good homely cafes on statue saturated piazzas. Carbo loading Italian style on the lunchtime special fixed price menu sometime throws up a culinary gem when least expected so the stop was not wasted. In no time the bus was climbing the hilly suburbs above Trieste into alpine vegetation no doubt exhausting the driver as he took a 30 minute unexplained break after 20 minutes driving leaving passengers to sit in the bus and contemplate their navels. The road trip into Slovenia is through green pastures, conifers, neat housing on small plots amidst a background of high mountains, scenic valleys until finally arriving at the bus station not far from the town centre. Ljubjlana in May is full as Europe wakes up to this most unassuming and friendly capital and accommodation roulette commences in the cheaper end of the flashpackers market. -
